I did chuckle at some Canucks fans saying Lankinen would sign a team friendly deal. ( Like 3x2 or 3x3)

Bro is 29 (few months from 30), he's going for the payday and that's expected. Don't think this is the worst goalie contract ever, but even with the cap rising, i'm on the meh side.

Welp...that's a lot of money and a lot of term. Means they are done with Demko.

If he is a one season wonder, they just made a big mistake. If he continues to progress, this will age nicely. It's not that bad considering how much the cap is going up.

Demko is going to ask for some ridiculous figure like $8 million per.

And Miller is a star. You traded a star for a bunch of average.
That wasn’t even my debate.

I’m saying if you’re going to criticize something, look at the full picture with the full deal, don’t just select whatever works for you.

Updated:

Out:
Miller = 8.0m
Heinen = 2.25m
Desharnais = 2.0m
Brannstrom
Dorrington
Fernstrom
1st
Cap Savings = 12.25

In:
Pettersson = 5.5m
O'Connor = 2.5m
Lankinen extension = 4.5m
Mancini
1st
Cap Added = 12.5m

12.5m - 12.25m = -0.25m cap for next season

This could end up being pretty rough. He's been below average since November started. And his career to date isn't much to get excited about either

Changing of the guard? With Ian Clark on the outs, is Lankinen the new model student for Marko Torenius?

Canucks are taking a big risk here with the term but with Lankinen’s consistency I imagine they feel he’ll be at least a 1B type still towards the end when the cap is well over $100M.

JT Miller, Brannstrom and dorrington
For
Chytil a 1st and mancini + 3m in cap

Then we traded the 1st for Marcus Pettersson, oconnor and Two Cap Dumps.

Used those cap dumps for Lankinen.

Chytil, lankinen (used cap dumps salary) oconnor mancini Pettersson 1st for jt miller, brannstrom dorrington and a 1st + 2m extra cap (1sts wash out)
It doesn't wash out, because whenever you trade a star for a bunch of ok pieces, you lose. When you have to use trade capital to send out cap dumps from the most recent free agency period, it makes your team worse. The Nucks were in a tough spot with Miller though, so I get it. But trying to spin all of this as a win...well, I applaud your optimism.

Don’t understand why people think Demko is done with the Canucks . 4.5mill is nothing for a back up goalie these days. Can you even trust Lankinen to take over?

At this point , who wants demko? He’s always injured, you really think teams are gonna offer him big money when he comes a free agent after next year? lol

I think this contract will age poorly. Seems like a lot for a goalie who's played mainly a backup role and only had starter games this season.

welcome to the new Cap reality. Teams will spend around 10-12M total for their goalies going forward, if they want to be competitive.

That’s exactly where I thought it was going to be.

Has absolutely earned it.

If you’re wondering, here were the comparables.

Logan Thompson: 6 years x $5.85
MacKenzie Blackwood: 5 years x $5.25
Joey Daccord: 5 years x $5

What a fantastic signing.

As always the AAV doesn't matter so much as the term with goalies, and how confident you are they will remain above replacement level.

Miller gone, Demko and Pettersson broken, Hughes with one foot out the door.

The PDO bender last year was fun but Canucks are back to being one of the most directionless teams in the league. Same as it ever was.

Sucks for Demko

His body is failing him in real time
Really good goalie

But I don’t think he’ll get that final contract that he wants

Don’t think he’ll get anything over 4 years

I kind of doubt he even gets that barring a massive turnaround next season. At this point, he's spent the better part of nearly two years injured. And outside of his most recent stretch, when he returned, he played at the level of AHL call up.

If he has another season riddled with injuries, I can't see any team offering more than 2 years unless he's willing to take pennies on the dollar.

I see people are still sleeping on Kevin Lankinen.

Dude posted a .909 save percentage in Chicago that had a Dcore- of 37 yr old Duncan Keith, Calvin Dehaan, Adam Boqvit, Zadorov and Murphy

Has a .905 save percentage this year despite Q Hughes and Hronek being out of the lineup for a big chunk of the time and having a dcore of Tyler Myers, Noah Juuslen, Carson Soucy, Forbort, Desharnais.

He has played at a .909 Save % in his last 77 games.

Lankinen is a 1B starter no question asked. He is above a backup level.

4.5 mil is nothing with the cap going up, its likely what backups will be paid. It gives the Canucks a couple of options:

1. Draft and develop a goaltender that hopefully can take over in the 3-4 years. ( maybe already in the system, Silovs, Tollopilo, Young) It buys the Canucks time and patience.

2. 4.5 mil AAV is nothing, they can decide to eventualy trade for or sign a big name goaltender making 6+mil.

As for Demko, I dont think they trade him, I think they just ride it out and go with a combo next year then walk away from signing him to a big contract afterwards. I dont think its worth it to trade him, Canucks probably wouldnt fetch much and they'd still have to look for another goalie afterwards. Silovs not ready.

Demko is done then? thats not THAT much money, but A LOT of term! looks like we are going to long term tandem
