That's quite the funny comment. He is not a #1 dman, but he is definitely a #2. He is one of the most elite defensive dmen in the league. He would solidify the defense for EDM to be an actual playoff team this year, and a legit cup contender next year.
Defense isn't the Oilers problem anymore. They need a right hand PMD which Tanev is the complete opposite

Tanev is not.

I don't think it's that bad of a proposal actually. Probably a little favored towards the Canucks, but I don't think it's that far off.

I difference in opinions here are probably based on how people value Eberle and Tanev. You're probably either hot or cold on either guy.

Tanev for Nuge straight up is probably pretty equal value.

However, in division trades like this are always risky. Tanev is a very good top pairing #2 defensive Dman, but if we're moving Nuge we would be looking more for an offensive PMD who can be our PP QB.

If the Hall-Larsson trade never happened I'd be open to an RNH-Tanev type deal, but at this point we just can't give up RNH for another defensive D. We desperately need an offensive PP Dman, and I'm a little hesitant to trade RNH with Draisaitl struggling and Nuge looking great (with mediocre line mates).

Sure but Hall is good enough to move pass that. Also think that Tanev is the better defensive defensemen.

Tanev is also older, but yeah Tanev is an excellent defensive Dman. I was backing how good Tanev was in one of the Leafs/Canucks trade threads around Tanev.

I think Larsson is a little more physical which is a pleasant surprise. I would agree, right now Tanev is likely ahead of Larsson overall. Tanev is among the top defensive Dmen, a legit top pairing #2.

A big thing for Chia was the age of Larsson, he's 23 (24 in a week) and that's right around the age where Dmen start to come into their own. He's signed with 5 years left on his contract to a very favourable cap hit as well.

I think it comes down to need, we really need a playmaking RHD who can play big PP minutes. Value is fair in a Tanev for Nuge swap, but I don't think we could do it. Nuge also faces heavy defensive match ups and we would have a massive hole at centre with him gone.

RNH-Tanev is better than Hall-Larsson value wise for the Oil.

That's true, but the need for a shutdown d-man is greatly lessened with the addition of Larsson. We sacrificed value for something we were in dire need of, Tanev would be a valued addition, but he doesn't scratch our biggest itch which is a top 4 d who can QB the powerplay and who is good enough defensively to take a regular shift. Also RNH is very key to the Oilers being a good team we need a shutdown center who can contribute meaningful offense and having traded away Hall, Purcell, and Yakupov we are nowhere close to as skilled on the wings, Eberle used to be expendable trade bait, but I don't think that is the case at all anymore.

The OP's trade makes the Oilers worse and helps Van quite a bit who really need an influx of skill to their line-up.

EDM gets hosed. Tanev is a great piece, but Sutter and Hansen? That package could maybe get you RNH and a 2nd, but not both RNH and Eberle

:nucks

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ($6M)
Jordan Eberle ($6M)

Total- $12M

:edmonton

Chris Tanev (4.45M)
Brandon Sutter ($4.375M)
Jannik Hansen ($2.5M)

Total- $11.3M

I'm a Canucks fan.

I can honestly say that I'd take that deal in a heartbeat.

No idea why Edmonton would make that deal, but that's gold from a Canucks perspective.

thats it

Doughty, Suter are for sure ahead of Tanev as well.

Hamonic, Stralman, Alzner, Muzzin, Larsson, McDonagh, Pietrangelo, are all in the discussion as well. Arguably others as well. Just because a few of them have better offense doesn't diminish the fact that they are just as solid (or more so) than Tanev defensively. And it doesn't mean Tanev isn't a stud, because he is.

Hahaha, when you think Chris Tanev is better than Ryan Suter you've lost touch with reality.

Tanev is a great defenseman, but not the type of player that Edmonton would or should consider moving RNH for. The biggest need the Oilers have is a right shot D-man that can run the PP, which Tanev doesn't do.

Regardless, Oilers coaching and management love RNH, he's not going anywhere. Not to mention that Edmonton's center depth becomes paper-thin the minute RNH is dealt.

OP still doing everything he can to get rid of RNH. Awful proposal and a plain awful idea to get rid of Eberle and RNH.

Do not tell that to nucks fans. SOME believe he is top 10 in the league and a few suggested it would have only been small add to get Matthews at the sraft

Got a link for that? If you honestly believe any rational canucks fan believes that you've truly lost your marbles.

Not even a nuck fan, but Tanev is easily a top pairing dman. Yeah he can't do offense but his defensive ability is amazing and makes him a great #2.

Hansen is actually a really good piece, it's Sutter that is meh, and the Oilers could do without. Hansen would actually fit in very nice on the Oilers roster.
