When a player has a NTC, he has full control of the situation. He'll decide which team he would waive for and such trade can't be a win. All things considered, the Canucks didn't do that badly.

It's particularly relevant as for at least 1 (potentially 2) of those years they're going to have two guys on ELCs on the blueline who should be significantly outperforming their contract.

That last year of Hughes' contract could be one of the most cost effective bluelines in the league.
