Ok good, did not want the Raptors to trade for Gobert. Interesting Twin Tower combo with Towns and Gobert.

Was watching some ESPN NBA coverage this morning and one of their reporters noted that the Jazz looked like they were getting into teardown mode given that they just salary dumped a player to the Nets for a 1st and noting the similarities from when Danny Ainge (who's in charge of the Jazz now) hired a new coach and immediately traded Garnett/Pierce to the Nets to kickstart their rebuild.

And lo and behold, in comes the Gobert trade. That's a haul for him. And it also probably helps establish a crazy market/price for Durant.

People said the same thing about Kawhi.

I would do Barnes + OG + picks for KD.

FVV-Trent-KD-Siakam-Precious

That's a championship level team. It would suck to part with Barnes, but it would be worth it to make another real run at a title.
Durant is one step away from another serious injury. The guy is a twig and already had Achilles injuries. Not the guy I would trade Barnes and multiple picks for

I don’t think KD fetches as much as believed, he’s aging and he has injury issues. Who’s going to break the bank for that? Barnes is a laughable “starting” point if you ask me, maybe three years ago KD, not now.

I would want ZERO part of anything going out the door that includes Barnes. That would be a non starter for me. I would look at anything else but I think it makes the most sense to stay the course here.

Either way there's solace in knowing we have amazing management who keeps acing shit - loving the Boucher, Young and now Porter signings.

I don’t think Barnes would be included in any deal the Raptors make for Durant just because of the issue with the Raptors needing to match Durant’s salary. Durant has a cap hit of $44 million, meaning with the NBA Salary Matching rules, the Raptors need to put at least $33 million dollars into the trade. Barnes only makes $7.64 million next year, meaning the Raptors still need to find over $25 million to put in the trade, which would have to be either Pascal Siakam, or 2 of VanVleet/Anunoby/Trent Jr. There is no way the Raptors part with that much just for Durant, the team probably wouldn’t even be good enough to compete with 2 or 3 of its core pieces off the team, even with Durant. The only Durant trades that make sense for the Raptors are Siakam+Picks or Anunoby+Trent Jr+Picks.

Speculation because Masai pulled the trigger on a star before. I don’t think this happens, we need to cut into our depth too much to make a deal here imo. It would deplete our roster. I think any good management is kicking the tires, but I don’t expect us to be serious players here.
Agreed, but at the same time its how the Nets see our talent, they may consider some pieces bigger than we do. Barnes is a non starter for K D, for me anyways.

Fun off-season though.

I only follow basketball very loosely but the NBA off-season has to be the most entertaining of any sport. The big blockbuster trades are absolutely hilarious from a hockey fan perspective. Teams just throwing every asset they have at one guy with zero f*cks given. Four or five first round picks plus two or three roster players for one dude. Then for all you know that star you traded your future for could demand a trade the next summer because so many of them are prima donnas and have way too much influence over the teams.

It’s a blast to follow for someone with little to no skin in the game but for fans of a player or team it must be a nightmare sometimes.

Slow build makes sense to me.
Not sure I’m sold on Durant for this team with the age and injury history.
How did Scotty compare to KD last year statistically anyway?

I don't see how it makes sense to go for Durant. With Leonard, it made sense because you weren't gutting your team with that trade, and the team needed to do something different to try to get over the hump. Raptors are still building, there's no sense of desperation. I think Masai is more patient than that.

Yeah gutting the team for Durant seems insane. Durant comes with so much baggage and he's getting old so I don't see how he's worth as much as some people seem to think. If the price was something like Siakam+OG+a 1st round pick or two then depending on how we view Durant's attitude, that could be interesting. If the price if Barnes + Siakam or VV + a bunch of picks, no thanks.

Siakam and FVV are 28. They’re easy playoff contenders with the current core they have but they’ll likely be too weak for the Bucks, Heat, and Celtics. How does a slow build even work if they aren’t drafting in the top 10/lotto? Plus OG and GTJ will be getting paid soon. If they’re acquiring KD it’s to add him to Siakam/FVV IMO.

KD had a 4.8 VORP in 55 games, good for 6th in the league. For context Kawhi put up a 4.7 in 60 games when he was here. Scottie was great for a rookie, putting up a 1.9 through 75 games. Question is do you expect him to become a knockdown shooter that can create his own shots? Maybe so, but nobody has ever done it quite like Durant.

Yea, I guess it depends what we are giving up. I am not opposed to it, just seems like a desperation move for a team that's been trying to contend for a few years with no luck. That's not Toronto at the moment

Another issue is that he simply might not want to play here. Supposedly he wants to go to either Phoenix or Miami which puts Brooklyn in a really shitty spot. It's just ridiculous how these superstars seems be able to do whatever they want.
