I would be curious to know how many great players in any pro sport that went on to become great coaches or GMs. I would bet very few. Most successful coaches and GMs weren’t the most gifted or talented athletes.

"So I think you have a fascinating situation happening in Toronto right now," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "And the reason it is fascinating is in talking to folks that have been in touch with the Raptors recently, the Raptors don't seem to know which direction they're going to take. Whether or not they are going to focus on re-signing Fred VanVleet, extending Pascal Siakam, potentially making other roster upgrades. Or whether or not they're going to send Fred VanVleet in a sign-and-trade, maybe investigate moving other players be it OG Anunoby or Pascal Siakam."

The Raptors also had a similar dilemma at the trade deadline, but stayed pat with their core while adding Jakob Poeltl.

"I think they're kind of back there," said Windhorst.

"They've been in this holding pattern for a while, basically," replied Tim MacMahon.

"They've interviewed a bunch of different coaches and it's not clear which way they're going to go. They probably have to make a decision about whether or not they're going to keep these guys together and that is going to influence the kind of coach you hire."

I think we have enough pieces that we could potentially aquire a top pick and not be in a complete rebuild. We could move 2 out of 3 of Siakim, Trent, Fred, OG in a combination of sign and trades and still build around Barnes, whoever we dont move and our top pick. The bigger problem is the depth... Our bench is what? Precious?

If you're picking in the 30-40 range, its worth the risk to draft Edey, the reward is too great. If it works out, you got an edge that's incredibly hard to replicate. Not many 7'4 300 lbs guys around with soft touch. Can't believe Raps management are so clueless these days. Its like they don't give a f***.

They have to extend a bunch of these guys and decide on UFAs. The time to make a decision has passed, it should have been made already. The hail mary Poeltl trade was an utter failure. Fans are losing interest for good reason. Personally, I think Masai has mentally checked out collecting his huge salary.

Pressure MOUNTING for the Heat! What lottery picks may be traded?! | The Hoop Collective

NBA on ESPN

May 26, 2023 Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective

Brian Windhorst is joined by Tim Bontemps and Tim MacMahon to react to the Celtics officially making this a series again, Joe Mazzulla deserving credit for his adjustments, why Boston’s 3-PT shooting percentages are so important, how Miami can tweak their lineup and if they believe the Celtics can come all the way back.

If they can get the 3rd or 4th pick and keep the 13th pick and re sign Poetl then I think we could be a competitive team. Maybe Masai really wants both Thompson brothers but that'd require a trade up from 13. There's also Emoni Bates who was once very overhyped and talked to being the next big thing or a KD clone. Didn't exactly pan out in college and live up to the hype but he could be another 2nd round pick you take a risk on because he's still a very good shooter and offensive player who with some development could become a good player or at least a very good bench player.

The Milwaukee Bucks are hiring Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin as the franchise’s next head coach, league sources told The Athletic on Saturday.

The decision to hire Griffin comes at the end of a three-week process of searching for a new head coach that started when general manager Jon Horst chose to fire head coach Mike Budenholzer on May 4.

“As we dive into the process and it evolves, obviously it becomes more narrow, but at this point, everything is and should be on the table,” Horst said on May 5. “We’re very much in a phase of gathering and collecting and who’s interested and what that very large candidate pool can be and then we’ll work from there.”

The search narrowed at the start of this week as the Bucks asked three candidates — Kenny Atkinson, Adrian Griffin and Nick Nurse — to make their way to Milwaukee for meetings with the team’s top decision-makers.

While all three candidates interviewed for the position with Horst, another factor became incredibly noteworthy late in the process: the finalists were also given the chance to meet individually with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo at his River Hills, Wis. home on Tuesday, sources briefed on the matter said.

After that, each candidate met with a Bucks ownership contingent on Wednesday. On Thursday night, Horst held a dinner to discuss the team’s decision regarding the head coach opening that included ownership. Both Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton were invited to attend, a league source said.

On Saturday, league sources said Nurse pulled out of the Bucks‘ search as the team decided between Griffin and Atkinson and ultimately chose Griffin. Antetokounmpo endorsed the hiring of Griffin, sources added.

Griffin will be the 17th head coach in Bucks franchise history, following Budenholzer, who put up a franchise-best .693 win percentage in the last five seasons in Milwaukee.

Griffin, 48, has never previously served as an NBA head coach and began his coaching career in Milwaukee as an assistant to Scott Skiles in 2008. Griffin, who was still playing that year, was part of a three-team trade involving the Oklahoma City Thunder, Cleveland Cavaliers and Bucks. But Griffin never played again, and Skiles added him to his staff.

In the last 15 seasons, Griffin has served as an assistant coach for five different teams (Bucks, Bulls, Magic, Thunder and Raptors). For the last five seasons, Griffin has served as the assistant coach for the Raptors.

A new head coach for the Raptors may be on board sooner rather than later.

Multiple NBA sources say the franchise is moving to a second round of interviews for the job that became vacant when Nick Nurse was let go last month after five seasons.

One source said Raptors vice chairman and president Masai Ujiri has narrowed the list of candidates to three and final interviews are being scheduled, although that number was not independently confirmed.

Names of the finalists were not available but, after casting a wide net through every level of coaching candidates around the world, it appears Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster are close to a hire.

Nurse was let go on April 21 and Ujiri said that day it might take until the NBA draft on June 22 before a replacement was found. That timeline has been advanced and it is likely the Raptors will have the 10th head coach in franchise history in time for the pre-draft workout process.

The Raptors have the 13th pick in the draft. While having a head coach and staff in place by then would be nice, it’s not a necessity.

There are several legitimate possibilities that have emerged in conversations with multiple league sources:

• Steve Nash would be a good fit and may thrive under with a more stable management and roster situation than he had to deal with in a tumultuous tenure with the Brooklyn Nets.

• Sacramento associate head coach Jordi Fernandez is among the most highly regarded assistants in the league and was a finalist for the vacant Phoenix job that a source says has been narrowed to Nurse and Doc Rivers.

• JJ Redick may not have any coaching experience but as an ex-player he would command respect and be an out-of-the-box hire who would set the Raptors apart from many other franchises.

• Sergio Scariolo, the former Raptors assistant and current coach of the Spanish national team, may want to become the first truly international head coach in the NBA. Ujiri and Webster flew to Italy to conduct an interview earlier this month.

• Monty Williams has a proven track record with the Phoenix Suns and is highly respected throughout the league, but it’s unclear whether the Raptors formally interviewed him.

• David Adelman of the Denver Nuggets is one of the most-touted assistants in the league but he’s also tied up for a couple of week as his current team seeks an NBA championship.

• Chris Quinn of the Miami Heat is in the same situation as Adelman but is considered one of the best assistants around.

• Becky Hammon, the head coach of the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces, drew some initial interest but she never became a serious candidate.

There are sure to be others whose names haven’t surfaced in the first round of interviews. The Raptors are notorious throughout the NBA for not leaking their intentions or what they have done or plan to do and the emergence of a “surprise” name would be keeping with the franchise’s method of operation.

But the exhaustive search that Ujiri and Webster undertook after Nurse’s departure has moved into the final stage.
