Not sure. Brown had to go. Boucher would have been nice but he is expiring. Trent?

I think he dropped the ball again.

Brown didn't have to go, his team option will get picked up and his is just as valuable next year. Boucher is signed next year. Trent I'd imagine was asked for cheaply and the Raps may still be giving him a chance to get an extension.

Brown and Boucher have contracts for next year and will likely be just as valuable then as they are now, if not more valuable because their deals will be wholly expiring.

Trent's contract is up but I've heard a lot of chatter about his market being very weird, so it's possible nobody was offering anything close to fair value for him. And a lot of times no trade is better than a bad trade.

Woulda been nice to liquidate more vets at the swing spots to force some playing time on kids like Dick and Agbaji, but sounds like the market wasn’t there. And it’s not a bad idea to force that issue anyway.
Who’s the backup point guard now?
One of IQ and Trent on the floor at all times I guess?

Gradey shouldn’t be seeing that much time on the floor in his rookie year anyway. Let the kid train and ramp up as he’s not built for a consistent 20-30 mpg workload. Keeping GTJ allows for them to work Gradey in gradually.

Not moving Brown was odd though since I don’t really like the fit. Perhaps something might come about in the offseason/draft day.

Brown would be backup PG now. He’s not a terrible ballhandler but maybe they pickup KL if he doesn’t go to Philly or another contender.

$$$$$$$$$

I checked the contracts. While they match this year. Dennis S has one more year at 13mill. Trade frees up money. Other than that it makes no sense
Listening to the radio on the way home they broke it down well. They traded the 1st which seems odd until you look at the acquisition of a player who was drafted top 15 two years ago. They traded off development time with a player they liked. He won accolades in college etc. his timeline lines up better with Barnes etc. Nemisis also brought up a bunch of great points about the true value of that pick.

said player who is on an expiring contract is being waived to save money

If we look at things in totality from the OG trade at the end of December, in just over a month and a half the team has reshaped as follows:

IN
  • G/F R.J. Barrett
  • G Immanuel Quickley
  • G Bruce Brown
  • G/F Jordan Nwora
  • F/C Kelly Olynyk
  • G Ochai Agabji
  • 2024 2nd round pick (Originally Detroit's. Probably ends up as the 1st-3rd pick in the round)
  • 2024 1st round pick (Indiana's. Probably between 18th and 22nd)
  • 2026 1st round pick (Conditional - Indiana's but protected 1-4)
  • Getting out of next year's Schroeder salary

OUT
  • F OG Anunoby
  • G Malachi Flynn
  • F Precious Achiuwa
  • F Pascal Siakam
  • F Otto Porter Jr
  • G Dennis Schroeder
  • F Thaddeus Young

PASS THROUGH (ie stuff that came in in one deal and then out in a subsequent move)
  • G Kira Lewis Jr
  • 2024 1st round pick (worst of the picks belonging to Utah, Houston, Clippers, or OKC. Almost certain to be bottom 3-5 in the round)
  • G Spencer Dinwiddie (bought out/waived)
Plus they still have the freedom to move Brown and potentially Boucher in the off-season or next season for more if they want.

I'm sure it doesn't look like enough considering they moved their two most marketable trade chips and best non-Scottie players but the return so far has been a legit second guy to run with Scottie who has a nicely complimentary skillset (Quickley) an overpaid but useful starting wing with extra marketability (Barrett), a still useful trade chip that can return a 1st+ (Brown), a stretch drive bench C/F who fills some needs and might be a useful, signable depth piece moving forward (Olynyk), a couple of intriguing depth guys who could play their way to a spot on next year's team (Nwora & Agbaji) some depth picks, and a ton of cap space in a situation where the only two really big, onerous deals on the books moving forward are both useful players (Barrett & Poeltl).

the real proof is going to be in how they use this cap space and build through the draft but we wanted the team to pivot hard and they're doing that.

Brown is toxic to this team. The rumors are flying and man, just look at the demeanor. Who wants to develop with that?!

Says who?

Worst case scenario he's here for part of next season and that's it. It's not like he's some poison pill handcuffed to the Raptors for the next 5 years or something. It's fine. If 2 half-seasons of Brown are enough to scuttle Scottie or any other player's development, this team has far bigger issues than just management not pulling the trigger on a trade just for the sake of getting something right now.

though given that you quoted a positive-on-Brown post by Saska Sault and acted like you were agreeing with a negative interpretation of things to trash management, this seems like your mind is made up to complain from the outset and it doesn't really matter what anyone is talking about

Disagreed. Turned Pascal and OG into Barrett, Quickley, Brown, Agbaji and 2 1sts. Brown can return more after the season. Gained cap flexibility and roster flexibility. Got 2 or 3 young guys a chance to grow or be moved on from. Was it a home run? No, but I'd says it a solid B grade with the potential to get better.

And cap space. The roster as constructed has room to make an off-season run at a big money player (straight UFA or poaching an RFA) or spread it out to potentially radically alter their makeup. That's a big plus even I have no idea what the FA landscape looks like yet.

That's the best part. Stars in the NBA get moved so often, having picks and space to take one on is huge. Or even having the contracts to match salary. Brown and Boucher make up 34? Million... Cap space to play with. Lots of options and we have some young guys to maybe develop into long term pieces. The team may actually be more enjoyable to watch knowing the direction now regardless if it may result in some stinkers.

They aren't going out and signing Giannis or a guy of that ilk this off-season. I did look at the FA list and Tyrese Maxey appears to be near the top of that but he doesn't really fit and with bird rights he's easier for Philly or another playoff team to fit into their plans. But regardless it seems likely the team is still going to suck next year. But they should be entertaining while they suck so that's something. If Olynyk returns on the cheap while Dick, Nwora, and maybe Agbaji can shoot reasonably well off the bench there might be enough of an offence to make them halfway exciting beyond Barnes/Quickley/Barrett.

Plus if they give up their 1st to the Spurs this year then they'll have their own pick for next season and maybe be able to add another top 5-10 selected player to the mix.

Tbh I could see us trying to sign Tyus Jones. Didn't he develop under Darko in Memphis? Who knows though now that we got IQ maybe not.
