Not sure what’s worse, your basketball or hockey takes, but they are both way off
I dont think it's a bad take. I think he listened too hard to the spin that Nurse was selling.

Management came out and said that Nurse's lack of willingness to develop anyone was a problem.

So far this year, we've had some positive outings from Achiuwa and Trent off the bench. We know Boucher can provide something and tonight Dick looks good so far.

The thing about Flynn is that management keeps re-signing him because Nurse never played him enough to prove he couldn't do it, but also didn't play anyone else enough to justify cutting Flynn.

Nurse gets the win against his former team. Siakam was barely used offensively. This balance offense won't work that way. Darko got outcoached in this one.

Veteran team with a rookie coach. Think it likely takes time to get the system anywhere close to where they want... but by then the playoffs may be out of reach. Still not too late to rebuild, minus losing FVV for nothing. Which, I'm not sure anyone was offering much for last year.... OG extension, Siakim for cap dumps and picks and same for Trent Jr if he doesn't show something by deadline.

GTJ needed to step up this season and instead he looks like he shouldn’t even be in the league. Sad.

Potential is there and it’s definitely a mental thing. But the clock is ticking

It was so blatantly obvious that this team needed a rebuild / aggressive retool - that Peoltl trade at the time looked awful for this team. Not necessarily because of the value in the trade (though if we give up like an 8th OA pick, that doesn't help), but because of the direction it signalled this team was taking.

We have no legit superstar to build around. We have no capspace. We've never been a free agent destination. We're missing 3 of our next 4 picks. Even with Scottie, our young players as a group are probably around league average, and certainly not considered one of the best groups of young players in the league. Siakam/GTJ are free agents next summer. Just no obvious ways to improve, and with our 1st rounder traded for Poeltl, it hampers our ability to pivot into a rebuild now (not to mention we already missed the opportunity to capitalize on FVV's value + tank for a higher pick in the 2023 draft after the trade deadline).

The Raptors have embraced mediocrity, and will likely be stuck there for the next 5+ years.

Wait are you saying we don't have first round picks in the next 3 drafts? I don't follow the raptors and the NBA like i did in the past, but if that's true, then wow holy shit.

As for this team, yeah it's looking pretty grim. I watched a bit yesterday, and it looks like a work in progress. I would give them 10 games before i pass any real judgment, but if they're sitting at a 2-8 record at that time, then yikes.

The front office deserves so much more heat. Do they have any idea what they're doing? Doesnt feel like it.
Yep, Masai has been the Teflon Don since the Kawhi trade. Nurse should have been gone earlier as well, which is also on Masai. He had no intention of giving time to the younger players, instead he just ran FVV and others into the ground. It’s not surprising most of the players don’t like him.

We're missing our 2nd rounder in both 2024 and 2025, and also our 2024 1st.

So the only pick we have in the next two drafts is our 2025 1st (though the 2024 1st has a condition on it, so if it's a top 6 pick, we could keep the 2024 1st, but give up the 2025 1st - either way, we're missing 3 of the next 4 picks).

All three of the Toronto teams have management that have looked extremely questionable the past few seasons.

Ok that's pretty bad. At least its mostly 2nd rounders, but still. pretty horrific team planning last season especially when pretty much ALL the fans saw it coming.

Damn, most of my optimism has evaporated. Too bad.
Damn, that was fast! But yeah, I feel the same. And I suppose it happened this fast because to be honest, there wasn't all that much optimism to begin with.

Indeed it doesn't.

Yup.

Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that the Raptors seemed like a model franchise? How quickly things can change. I'll try to think positive and say that if the Raptors can go from looking like a model franchise to looking like they haven't a clue in such a short time span, then maybe the Leafs can go from perennial playoff underachievers to playoff overachievers in a short time as well. It could happen, right? Right!??

FWIW, NBA 2nd rounders don't hold a lot of value. If Darko can develop players the way we hope he will, UFAs can hide the lack of 2nds. Trading a 1st hurt, but what made it worse was that it was done for Nurse, when Nurse arguably should have been gone a year ago.
