Post-Game Talk: Utterly Rittich-ulous Leafs Lose 6-3

Rittich hasn't single-handedly lost a game like he did tonight.

Campbell can't play out the string and Freddy isn't coming back any time soon. Rittich will get another start in the next 3. If he stands on his head you forget tonight. If he sucks you have him switch places with Hutch.
I'm interested to see how it plays out. We may see Rittich next Thursday, but if it's before then I think it's a bad sign.

Have to think Andersen at least gets a game going into playoffs to backup

Aside from Campbell's first 7-8 games this season goaltending has been consistently poor throughout. At some point, the finger needs to be pointed at the coaching staff/goalie coach if every goalie we play can't play at an at least average level.
You know what , I’ve been the biggest supporter of the the staff , but I can’t disagree with you at all, but not only the goalies

I think Matthews was just simply bad tonight. It wasn't that he was passing up shots, it's that he didn't get himself into good areas to shoot or get it when he was in position

The 6 on 5 EN situation was a good example of where he got some looks but kept floating around the RW area deferring to Holl instead of doing anything creative with the puck. Made no sense when he exited the zone with minimal forecheck pressure either like it was a 3 on 3. Seemed adverse to taking it to the net and just wanted to make the finesse play.

Also didn't help that every give and go opportunity he had with Marner seemed to end with Marner trying to snipe.

Keefe has become Babcock levels of stubborn in terms of never separating Matthews & Marner. Like wtf they can play apart from each other too it's not the end of the world.

Right, coming from the guy who traded our whole team for pucks in a mock trade deadline.
Bud it just goes to show that i have f*** all to worry about when you are my critic. I look at from where it comes from. My team was fantasy,Engvall is your fantasy dude. Worst player in the league. Best at stealing money from any team. There’s no way to even get him out of the lineup, he’d never get injured

Thornton, Simmonds, and Engvall are not NHL caliber players.
And we have Hyman(injured), Mikheyev(injured), Foligno and Robertson.

Those f***ers should never see another second of ice time with the vastly superior options above (when they're available of course).

Can we even take him off LTIR with our cap situation? Some Houdini level shenanigans by Pridham there.

Hutch for the Conn Smyth

What a walk down that would be. This a betting feast, and i HATE betting. ALL i know, is what i see, this is too obvious a walkdown.

SO, if I was inclined to bet, LEAFS to win round one.

But betting on sports, its right up there with lottery picks for me.

But time will tell, pretty obvious walk down to my eyes.

He hasn’t moved Tavares and Nylander either.

he likes those pairs and is trying to find the best 3rd wheel for them.

I would like him to flip Marner and Nylander.

Goaltending aside, this feels very familiar. Something missing with this group. Like there’s a lack of killer instinct. Can that be learnt or is it just not in their DNA?

We are one of the better teams from coming behind in the league. We have no issue coming back.

All strengths when trailing this year:
4th in GF/60. 2nd in xGF/60. 12th in xGA/60. 4th in GA/60. 4th in save percentage.

All Strengths when tied:
1st in xGF/60. 1st in GF/60. 16th in GA/60. 2nd in xGA/60. 22nd in save percentage.

All strengths when leading:
22nd in GA/60. 12th in xGA/60. 5th in xGF/60. 20th in GF/60 (PP has been the main problem here). 26th in save percentage.

Seems like our goalies are only dialed in when we are losing... Which is exactly why we keep letting teams back in, especially when our shooting percentage when we are leading is not great.

Of course the team in front can always be better. Convert more chances when we are leading. Fix our PP. Maybe prevent more chances. However that is all masking the real issue, which is the fact that our goalies are not dialed in nearly enough for even an average NHL goalie. Can't just zone out when we aren't losing, and we probably prevent more chances if these guys had better rebound control.

Goaltending is ultimately what is going to get us places in the playoffs. We keep getting outplayed in net and giving up bad goals that the other goalies do not give up. Dubas, our 40 mill core forwards, etc. are not going to be able to do anything to help us win if we can't even get basic saves from our goalies, who should be a lot better than they are.

The downside of spending like drunken sailors at the trade deadline.
