I’m just waiting for the “should we call up Beck?” posters! lol!
If he continues to progress, it would not surprise me if Beck gets a 'taste' of the NHL later this season. It also wouldn't surprise me that once called up, Beck never returns to Laval.

I wasn't a fan of the Vincent hiring but glad he is proving me wrong, glad to see he has the Rocket playing so well to start the season. I wasn't very familiar with him and was just expecting another dinosaur head coach in Laval, but with the way the team is playing and hearing him in press conferences he has been a very good hire so far.

Despite some injuries and losing Mailloux to Montreal, they have kept rolling, even their only loss this year could've been a win.

We've finally got to a point where the Kidneys and Farrells of the world are sit and let develop and see what you have.

Under Bergevin they'd be critical prospects we needed to pan out because we had no other options internally.

If Kidney and Farrell don't become NHL regulars it will ultimately have 0 impact on our ability to become contenders. If they do, that's just another asset or player in the mix to choose the best of the lot and trade the others.

Pretty crazy we will be adding two more first round picks, one a relatively high one (ours), and we should have two fairly high 2nds to use either to draft, acquire a youngish player with some jam and fire, jump into the first round again, or move up with either of our first rounders.
Well said. Our prospect board was so pitiful for so long that anytime a player showed any semblance of skill he was” an exciting too prospect “when the reality was he wouldn’t be a prospect on any other team

We were basically grasping at straws but sadly so many couldn’t see this and kept believing we had players who could make it

I was at the game last night ( 2nd time this year) and the kids put on a great show.
2 games in person is a small sample , but some things are just really apparent.
1) people crapping on Roy are out of their minds; he might look nonchalant at times, but that’s just his ‘smarts’ in full display…. He always finds open ice to sneak into, he’s a great back checker and kills plays with his active stick, and he has elite vision that allows him to laser passes to his teammates; I have said it before, if he played with talented players he would be very productive in Montreal.
2) Florian Xhekaj will have a NHL career sooner than later. I appreciate the fact that Vincent puts him in all critical situations. Xhekaj is sneaky fast , has good hands and looks like he enjoys getting his nose dirty, the kid is not shy.
3) Tuch is a great forchecker, and looks intimidating on the ice, he’s also very sharp in the D zone , this guy has NHL 3rd liner written all over him. Put your money on it, he’ll have a nice career.
4) Beck does all the little things NHL coaches love; nothing flashy, but highly effective mostly in the defensive zone. I know he had 2 pts last night, but his offensive skills look limited.
5) I would be the most surprised fan if Farrell makes it in the NHL…… he gets pushed around by everyone, plays a perimeter game and looks intimidated. I would not be surprised if the Habs simply let his entry contract run out and move away from him after.
6) Dobes is a beast in net
7) I’m really not fond of Engstrom. He’s always making fancy little plays that don’t work on smaller North American rinks. He’s a very high risk defender. I hope he adjusts at some point.
8) Trudeau is a stud on D, even if did not look good last year in the few games he played in the NHL preseason, I would not count him out right away. If he keeps improving his game, he might surprise people .
9) I really like Davidson. He’s also a very efficient forechecker and score a beauty of a goal last night. He plays a ‘pro’ game a la Tuch, but with lesser skating abilities; don’t think he’ll make it in the NHL, but he’s the kind of warrior you want in your AHL squad.

So overall, going to Laval is a great experience.

Yes, that experience, size and mobility on defence is the positive foundation that this very young team can build on. Though I don't focus on veterans in my game summaries, I have been particularly impressed with Jacobs. He is clearly the most mobile of the Laval defencemen and, at least to this observer, a notch too good for the AHL. It would be interesting to see what he could at the next level.
From the day he was drafted, Jacobs has always been seen as such a great skater. He just goes in the category of in the middle between AHL and NHL. Never was a point producer. But he fitted in the untapped potential that eventually stayed...untapped...lol.

Which means, either career AHL'er or....Europe. Nothing to be ashamed of.....it still makes you a professionnal hockey player. Something we all wish we'd be.

Ya he might but my point is the second someone gets a couple points, people think they should be called up and that’s just wrong. Let the guy finish the year in Laval and hopefully win. He’s not moving the needle in Montreal this year unless he steps in as a second line centre all of a sudden.

An almost guaranteed future NHLer, let's develop him properly.

Here are my observations about the game again focusing only on our true prospects.

Beck again played a strong game displaying his skating ability, playmaking skills, offensive vision and physical play. He made the plays that led to the Kidney and Davidson goals. These passes were precise and hard and with a little a bit more finish from his teammates, Beck could have had 2 or 3 more assists. Beck sees the ice exceedingly well and usually finds the open man. His overall skating ability is easily noticeable as he has both speed and quickness. His proficiency on face-offs is dropping and I am concerned about Beck's stamina. While not a huge concern, Beck has evidenced a drop off in his level of play towards the end of his shifts that is quite, at least to this writer, noticeable. While not a Gallagher level problem, its an issue that I noticed while following him in the OHL. Nevertheless, Beck is a certain NHLer who Laval uses in all high leverage situations.

I think Davidson had his best game so far this season. He showed his NHL level shot on several occasions including taking a one-timer from the point on the power play that Dawes still hasn't seen or moved on and snapping in Beck's great pass from about 20 feet out on a bang-bang play. Davidson plays every shift like it's his last, playing physical and showing far more mobility than what I saw from him in the WHL. Davidson is going to force Hughes' hands because he's on the verge of making the NHL and if he gains that all illusive half step in quickness this kid will play in the NHL and play well. Davidson gets better and better every time I watch him.

While not his best game, Roy's hand skills and offensive anticipation stood out. Roy has the unteachable skill of finding the soft spots in the offensive zone and making himself available to teammates to take a pass. Beck and Roy worked together well and Beck found Roy for a grade A scoring chance right in the slot. Roy also showed flashes of speed that showed that if he applies himself he can get around the ice well enough to play in the NHL. But he has to do it consistently or his chances to play at the next level will evaporate.

The player/prospect that continues to surprise me the most is Riley Kidney. This kid continues to show levels of mobility, skill and grit that were only a distant hope/idea last year. Kidney can skate and compete well at the AHL level. He makes subtle passes in all three zones of the ice that are surprisingly effective for such a young and largely unheralded player. The goal Kidney scored tonight truly displayed his skills and potential. There were three elements in his goal that provide an idea of Kidney's skill and growth: 1) his ability to receive and control Beck's pass at full speed while being closely checked; 2) his ability to outmuscle and beat the opposing defenceman wide and create a clear path to the net; and 3) his finishing skills to beat the goaltender. Kidney is moving up the Canadiens' depth chart and if his development continues, he, like Davidson, will be realistic options to make the Canadiens in the next couple of year. The one part of Kidney's game that needs cleaning up is his on-ice discipline. He takes way too many penalties (another 2 tonight) resulting from either the careless use of his stick or holding. Fortunately, this is a shortfall that can be coached away.

Tuch and his center Florian Xhekaj both had modest games. Tuch continues to show his NHL level skating and physical play but squandered one of Beck's many passes that set up teammates right in the slot. While Tuch will never be a gifted scorer, he has to be more proficient when set up with a grade A level scoring chance. Tuch did deliver a number of heavy hits and was particularly effective on the forecheck as he pressured and harassed Utica defencemen all game long. Similarly, Xhekaj had his ups and downs in the game. The ups included displaying his surprising straight forward speed which he used particularly effectively on the forecheck. Other 'ups' were his ability to make subtle passes that allowed easy exits from Laval's defensive zone and the coaching staff's growing reliance on this young player as shown by their use of Xhekaj on penalty killing and having him on the ice during the last minute of play in a close, intense game. The 'downs' included his weakness on face-offs, his general lack of quickness and making high risk plays when there were better options available. While Tuch has NHL written all over him, Florian is still a work in progress.

Farrell continued to disappoint. While he showed off occasional bursts of quickness which caused some pressure on the forecheck and created a couple of lesser scoring chances, Farrell was largely invisible tonight. Unless he picks up his game its unlikely he is in the team's long term plans. There are and will be, better options.

On defence, both Engstrom and Trudeau had less than stellar games. Engstrom displayed his above average mobility and walked the line effectively while working the point on the power play. But Engstrom was also guilty of making several high risk plays that could have proved disastrous if Utica had been able to capitalize on them. I get the feeling that Engstrom is skating at 3/4 speed as he awaits his inevitable call up. Trudeau showed off glimpses of his high-end skating ability but like Engstrom, Trudeau made a number of ill-timed, high risk plays that resulted in turnovers. Trudeau needs to clean up his game or he won't get a sniff of the NHL this year. Or next year.
Great report as always.

Good to hear about Kidney. If he can make strong physical gains, I think there’s potential there.

I've always felt Kidney has some of the most pure offensive talent on that team.
Flashes of it come to the surface on occasion but I'm fairly certain he'll never find the consistency he had in Junior.
I would have agreed with you at the start of last season. But I saw flashes of Kidney's potential as early as last season. I would be watching the game and all of a sudden a Laval forward would do something that caught my eye. I remember asking myself - who was that player? Surprisingly, it was the kid who looked like he should be playing Bantam hockey. If it happened once, I could dismiss the flash as an anomaly. But it happened more than once in a while. I took note.

This year, Kidney's development has continued. He can push the play. He can skate at an AHL level. He shows grit and surprising strength along the boards. He's willing to take a hit to make a play. He has the ability to finish. Pre-conceptions about players are hard to dislodge. Even for a wizened old observer like this writer. I have learned many things in my long association with the sport of hockey, including, and among the most important: you can't teach heart. A player can improve his basic skills marginally and, in some cases, significantly. But heart, determination is something you're born with and die with. It's an indispensable element of success in any human endeavor.

This kid has heart. Kidney's brilliant goal in the last game shows that he also has a high level of skill. Can he bridge the wide gulf between being a presumed fringe AHL player and the NHL? Who knows. Few players do. But I wouldn't bet against this kid and his admirable level of determination and dedication.

I suggest we all continue to watch Kidney's development without the all too predictable perceptions as to his ceiling. He may well surprise us.
