Utah Mammoth new name for Utah HC?

Well sticking with hockey club would probably be just a bit better than Wasatch. I think Mammoth is a mid option compared to some of the other proposals, but it's not terrible. I mean, as mentioned above we have a team named the Wild which is just objectively bad but we've heard it enough times that it's just part of the tribe for better or worse. That effect has helped a lot of teams. I mean with no disrespect to any of these teams, the Flyers is a pretty lame name. Like what is it, just everything that flies from planes to eagles? Penguins? Flightless waddling birds that are prey to seals and killer whales? Canucks and Canadiens are just different words for a nationality. I still don't know what the f*** a Red Wing is other than just a random animal body part with a color attached to it. Avalanche probably sounded dorky as shit when the team was originally formed. Predators instantly has a tragic double meaning. What's cool about an Islander? What's cool about an Oiler? What's cool about a Maple Leaf? And there is certainly nothing cool about a Senator. What's intimidating or cool about a Duck? (this is my favorite team) The problem with trying to come up with a great name is most of the good ones are taken either within this league or by other major pro sports teams. Usage over time and legacy helps make lame sounding names have iconography. Mammoth is fine and we'll all be used to it eventually. It could make for solid branding too depending on the logo they lock down.
I don't care too much, I'm jusr glad I don't have to call them "Utah" every time the team name comes up. And the messing up was related to not having an actual name from the get go.

Would’ve preferred the plural version and wasn’t overall my favorite choice but agree with most here, it’s “fine” at worst.

I think we will need to wait and see the final logo and jersey to give real opinions on the overall brand - but I think they went with the choice that was likely to generate the least amount of “fake internet outrage” by wanna be brand designers (ie, everybody online).

Outlaws is such a cool name with an immediate attachment to the wild west which fits the area pretty well and imo is the most interesting and badass period of America.

The only reason I can think why they passed on it was the colour scheme doesn't scream outlaw? Wild west colours for me would be gold, black, silver and sandy brown?
Mammoth fits very well with the current colour scheme.
Outlaws is beer league type of name. I think that's why it was put aside.

Mammoth is fine. It fits the area. As some have stated before, names are never universally liked. They become liked over time because people get used to it. Clearly, some people would have loved outlaws, which I thought would have been really amateur. Some would have liked Yetis, where I thought the sound of "Yu-ta-Ye-ti" was ridiculous.

At some point, the team in charge does the consulting, make choices and moves on with what they feel comfortable with. I think overall they made a solid choice (if it is indeed their final choice).

Nah Outlaws sounds too bush league. I still hope they choose a name that historically, culturally, or geographically relevent to Utah.

Utah Yotes would have been perfect. Too bad. Thanks Buttman.

Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch, The Sundance Kid,, and Jesse James all have a significant connection to Utah. That's why it was a cool connection to the team and why Outlaws would have worked

And the Flames could have changed their name to the Cowboys when they moved to Calgary, it would have worked... but was still a shitty idea. There is far too many sports teams in North America with a cowboy/western theme and far too many use the same logo idea of a cowboy hat and a bandana... its become a generic go too for high schools, colleges and minor league teams because it's easy and you don't need to be particularly creative

Okay, but did you see the mock Utah concept on Reddit?

Are they going to announce the name that was picked soon or are they going to wait right before the new season starts to release it?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the Nord's logo looked like one

I still liked Utah Coyotes the best. Too bad they couldn't have kept the name
Yeah the Coyotes branding was great. It's a shame they couldn't use it.
