Honestly, if you are over ten years old, most new names for North American sports teams are going to suck...because sports over here are aimed at children. There is no pause at the arena that isn't filled with raucous music, something is always happening on the jumbotrons, and even the chants are generic and easy for kids to learn:

"Let's go YOUR TEAM NAME HERE, let's go".

This isn't England, where the chants are often elaborate (and hilarious) and the team nicknames are often named for historical vocations that grown-ups followed in the area (Cobblers, Saddlers, Brewers, Chairboys, Gunners, Glovers, Hatters etc. etc.). This is America, land of mythical creatures and aggressive birds.

So if Utah is named a name you hate - remember it is not for you, anyway. It's for the kids, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Didn’t LV owner originally want to go with Black Knights as the team name, but that’s Army’s football team?

It's for all the West Point athletic teams and their paratrooper unit (even if the mascot is actually a mule  )

Bill Foley was a West Point graduate and wanted to use Black Knights for his hockey team, but the Army wouldn't allow it. Knights by itself ran into problems with London. So he went with Golden Knights and everyone agreed to that.

In the context of talking about NHL teams, who would confuse the Las Vegas Knights with the London (Ontario) Knights to the extent where the Vegas Knights need to become the Golden Knights?

There once was two difference sports teams in St Louis and both were named the Cardinals.

There are 47 college teams that are called the Tigers (exaggerating slightly).

And before you say that’s the US, remember that the Canadian Football league once had around 10 teams and two of them were named Rough Riders.

I'm not too familiar with Canadian trademark/copyright law but it may have had something to do with it, given Foley couldn't apply for a Vegas Knights trademark in Canada, but that would be confusing since as you noted there were two teams in Canada that shared a name.

Just call them the Utah Jeti's

Thanks, now I won't sleep tonight.

I thought the paratrooper team that performs at air shows was the called golden knights, while West Point athletic teams were the black knights.

Knights by itself ran into problems with London.

That's what Foley claimed, but London said that they were never contacted about it.

But the thing is that "Knights" is generic enough that there's no way any one team could have exclusive rights to it. If Foley really wanted to be just the Knights, he easily could've gotten the name trademarked as the Vegas or Las Vegas Knights.

I think that he just wanted his own thing without ticking off Army too much.

Didn't recall that one. But it's been nine years and ...... sigh.....

I just distinctly remember he wanted Black Knights at the outset. I've obviously got the timeline for everything else mixed up.

Getting back to Utah......

I can't see the reasoning where a professional hockey team could be "confused" with insulated beverage containers.

Still a little surprised the Olympic angle didn’t take off…..people do their high-altitude training in places like SLC and Colorado Springs….

I don’t think they tried Pantheon or Olympians, but better to get snaked by the Olympics or Marvel than a company that only got spotlight status when people started shooting footage of themselves blowing up overpriced coolers.

I have been steadfast in my desire for a team name that ends in an "s". And the more I think about it, the more I'd like us to try and get the Coyotes name off of the Arizona owners.

That said, I'm willing throw away all my preferences and wholeheartedly endorse "Rocky Mountain Extreme" because that's a cool f'ing name.
