If weird means not making panic decisions based on injuries and sticking to a plan..... I hope BA stays certifiably nuts.
I didn’t say anything about making panic decisions. I’m merely stating that most teams don’t carry an 8th defenseman at all times. Unless that’s new this year and I missed the memo.

Panic decisions??

Ryan Smith "They wanted to send a message that their rebuild was done. They sent that message by pulling off a trade to get top-pairing defenseman Mikhail Sergachev."

Ryan Smith "Now it was about determining what was the best way to supplement that core so it could take the next step in its evolution."

If you have surplus assets but a depletion of defensemen when you can not even call anymore up from your farm team you make a trade. It's proper asset management. Asset management involves the balancing of costs, opportunities and risks against the desired performance of assets to achieve an organisation's objectives.

BA wants meaningful games (fluff Statement or sand bagging )

Hey BA Ryan your boss you know.

Pretty obvious Mermis gets to be healthy scratched and maybe come in once in a while so that the guys in Tucson can keep getting top minutes and developing properly rather than sitting in the press box at the NHL level and only getting to practice.

Waste of assets to try and get someone to fill that spot or 6th defenseman any other way when injured guys start returning later this season.

And we can out of the play off picture by then as well. It says A LOT to a team when the team has faith in them and goes and get a rental to help them THIS year.

I'm not sure there's many dmen available other than spare parts/waiver wire types. By the time sellers commit to selling our own guys will be coming back into the line up.

As for rentals, even the Provorov rumors I've seen have been saying CBJ isn't ready to move him yet. It's suspected that they're waiting until closer to the deadline to get the best return.

Edit: You mentioned Fowler yesterday. I read that he has a 4 team trade list that he's willing to expand, but would he for Utah?

Anyways, I just don't think bringing in help is that simple.

Who said Mermis was going to be an 8th??

Connauton was brought up to be the 7th against Colorado, and that leaves a hole in Tucson.

FWIA from Leafs fans Mermis has been planted on the Marlies roster and wasn't going to go anywhere there.

He was an expendable and BA needed to fill a hole without needlessly spending any assets.

So odds are one of them will be headed back to Tucson.
