I didn’t say anything about making panic decisions. I’m merely stating that most teams don’t carry an 8th defenseman at all times. Unless that’s new this year and I missed the memo.

If you have surplus assets but a depletion of defensemen when you can not even call anymore up from your farm team you make a trade. It's proper asset management. Asset management involves the balancing of costs, opportunities and risks against the desired performance of assets to achieve an organisation's objectives.

Pretty obvious Mermis gets to be healthy scratched and maybe come in once in a while so that the guys in Tucson can keep getting top minutes and developing properly rather than sitting in the press box at the NHL level and only getting to practice.

Waste of assets to try and get someone to fill that spot or 6th defenseman any other way when injured guys start returning later this season.

I'm not sure there's many, if any decent dmen available this far away from the TDL. Even less likely to find a game changer. By the time sellers start selling our own guys will be coming back into the line up.

As for rentals, even the Provorov rumors have been saying CBJ isn't ready to move him yet. It's suspected that they're waiting until closer to the deadline to get the best return.
