Didn't they win 2 Cups with Sergachev playing Top 3 minutes? lol
He was a sheltered dman behind both Hedman and McD. He hadn't lived up to the 8.5 aav contract and was still making very questionable decisions far too often, especially in his own end. He has plenty of talent, and perhaps he puts it all together in Utah, but whether Tampa had acquired Hanifin at the deadline or them when they did re-acquirr McD, the writing on the wall was there for Serg. It was a win-win, but Moser and Geekie have looked good so far in Tampa.

Sergachev was good in the 2020 Cup run, but quite pedestrian in sheltered minutes in the 2021 Cup run. He showed big time flashes in the 2022 Cup Final run, had a great offensive regular season in 2022-23, but his defensive play was inconsistent to outright bad in Tampa.

Moser has been dominant at times defensively for the Lightning so far, and Geekie looks damn good on the 2nd line with Cirelli and Hagel. Plus we still have the 2nd to use.

All that said, I do STILL feel like this is going to be a win-win. Everyone wants to declare a winger five minutes after a trade. It’s ridiculous. I suspect both teams will end up happy. But the season just barely started. And Geekie could be anything from an All-Star to a 3rd line tweener. It’s way too early to say anything definitively. I really like all three players and hope they all play great.

Has this trade helped to stabilize that d corps? Valimaki not playing over his head, getting as injured etc.?

Sergachev was always going to be a lock for a ton of offensive production, now that he's getting #1 PP time.

Obviously no Kucherov/Stamkos/Point etc. but I said he'd be a lock for 60+

He’s been the team’s MVP this season. It’s only been a month. So I don’t want to get too crazy. But he’s Utahs October MvP anyway.

His all around play has been great. He’s keeping the team together out there.

You don’t lead the nhl in ice time and also get sheltered, easy minutes. It’s literally not mathematically possible.

This was the main problem with Sergachev in Tampa, he was gifted as much offensive zone time as we could spare outside of the #1 PP, but he was sub-par defensively and consistently was guilty of being out of position or getting beat to pucks. Lackadaisical is the best word to describe him, just going through the motions.

Looks like inserting him into the #1 role flipped a switch for him. Big fan favorite here, nice to see his play mature to match his heart.

I really think this is the type of trade both fanbases could end up loving.
