What is Russian Factor?

A term referring to the consideration made by teams, when drafting a player of Russian decent, of the risk associated with that player deciding to sign and play in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) instead of staying in the National Hockey League (NHL). If a team were to draft a Russian, who then decides to stay in the KHL, is effectively a wasted draft pick or use of the asset.
