yes but the people bring up population of USA, but it's really very locale specific.. 43 Minnesota players in NHL, 47 Finnish players in NHL and Minnesota kids don't really have any protectionist policies/a separate home league built mostly for them to go towards if they end up being OK.
Aren't Minnesotans mostly Swedes?

Sweden is the #1 hockey nation confirmed.

Wait Finland fans claimed this was one of the worst Finland teams in the last decade… how’d they dominate the US like that?
We claim that pretty much in every tournament, whether u20 or the Worlds. I have always been tired by that negativity - we are bloody Finland, we will have a real chance in every match. I think "sisu" best translates as "a grim, bloody minded decision to battle on against overwhelming odds no matter what", so maybe all that endless pessimism is our secret weapon, but god it can get boring... :)

this game was incredible. Rimpinen was absolutely sick. Our boys showed us that they can fight against the best really well. What a step up from the first two games. Thanks USA for an entertaining match!

Quite funny thinking about the American context how routinely our commentators use the word "Yankee" (jenkki) for the Americans. I guess it's the same situation in many countries.

Lots of Finns up there too, fwiw. Largest concentration in the States, over 100K.

Don’t get me wrong though, there are about 4x as many Swedish Americans living there.
Quite a few Swedish Americans also arrived from Finland. Like Richard Dean Anderson who is probably one of the most famous Minnesota Swedes actually has his roots in Finland.

Finland has more medals from U20s than USA.
Not in the last 20 years. The US has almost doubled up on Finland since 2024.

This argument regarding medal count is irrelevant. USA’s hockey program has grown exponentially. The quantity and quality of talent is continually improving. Finland goes through peaks and valleys. I’m not referring to the totality of Finnish hockey, I’m referring to where both respective programs are today.

Finland is a team with 2 first round picks and 9 undrafted players. The United States has 7 first round picks, the projected first overall pick, and several players taken very high in the second round. This was definitely not the case in the 80s and 90s when you compared these teams.

Wtf are you talking about? US medals almost every year. Finland certainly does not. It’s not comparable. How many Fins are projected to even be drafted this year? Probably none in the first two rounds.
Michael, Finland always does more with less in these international tournaments. The States produces more and better NHLers, but the Finns almost never get blown out and probably should have beaten our Gold Medal teams in 2021 and 2024 if not for some late game heroics in the Semifinal Game.

I disagree with that. They sometimes do less with more. They are inconsistent. But, naturally they will be inconsistent. The 2016 Finland team remains one of the best U20 hockey teams I’ve ever seen the following two years they were saved in relegation. We are looking at a team that is on the downward trend with very little projectable success in the next few years.

The argument that I was having was regarding the total medal count of both teams not being relevant in the quality of the current teams. When we look at team quality and past performance in this years tournament, it is clear the USA had an embarrassing performance against a team they definitely should have beat.

I’ve been getting dogged on for saying the quality of Finland’s hockey team is not good. I believe that and I believe the established narrative that they are falling behind in the grand scheme of international hockey. They will surely rise again, but they are on the downward trend for sure.

Eh, really depends on what metrics you wanna use: quality of players produced versus results in international tournaments. Finland has never been that close to Sweden in terms of quality NHLers produced, but Finland has won more World Junior titles than Sweden in recent memory.

Finland seems to bounce back everytime you think they're on the decline. They clearly are producing fewer future NHLers as you can see in recent drafts, but they're still capable of beating USA, Canada, Sweden in any given World Junior game.

I’m tired of rational argument. Please let me make outlandish emotional claims as a USA Stan lol. I will not stop

43% of Minnesotans have some Scandinavian origin. Lotta Swedes and Norwegians.

I would like to see a Minnesota entry in the WJC's.
I believe they literally eat lutefisk there... Oh yah. Well, my mother still loves that vile stuff, she's turning 94 next year, so is excused :)

Appalling stuff - but then, I don't have any Scandinavian in me. The place below is great eating in Minneapolis.

God, that stuff is awful! And that nasty white sauce and boiled potatoes really don't help it all. It was one of my parents absolute Christmas favourites: up to the late 70's they would get the dried cod and cure it themselves in lye. Then supermarkets started to sell it - and my mother still enjoys it to this day...
