USA vs. Finland, Group A, Dec 29 2024; 2:30 Eastern

Here we go with the annual "population of countries" dumb argument again...again.
population of Minnesota: 5.7 million, population of Texas: 31.2 million

but I can guarantee Minnesota will have more NHL Draft picks in 15 years (those kids are 3 right now so nobody would have any clue whom they may be). Population doesn't matter. How many rinks there are, how many people each rink is meant to service (if you have like 5 rinks to serve all of the Houston, TX metro area that does you no good), how many youth hockey orgs there are, the general popularity levels of hockey in the local zeitgeist matters a lot more.

Compared to when Houston had zero sheets of ice in the metro area it's a step on the right direction. But I wasn't discussing state vs state, I was commenting on countries.

yes but the people bring up population of USA, but it's really very locale specific.. 43 Minnesota players in NHL, 47 Finnish players in NHL and Minnesota kids don't really have any protectionist policies/a separate home league built mostly for them to go towards if they end up being OK.

Credit to the Finns, they absolutely dominated the USA over most of that game, USA played a like dog shit and were greedy when they needed to use their teammates. The PowerPlay was a train wreck, Finland had better SH chances, and had most of the better scoring chances throughout the game. USA gonna need to remove their heads from their asses in a hurry

There are only 17 public rinks in the state of Florida for 21 million people. I know where I'm living, it's over an hour to get to one either to the north east or to the south, despite living in a county with about 300,000 residents. I couldn't get my son into any sort of house league when he wanted to start playing again, so he went hard into lacrosse instead (team game, sticks, goal... able to be played without driving over an hour).

I'm curious if the kid downtown with the Finland flag on his balcony will be out waving it tonight at the bars. :D

Congrats to the Finns. Played their hearts out from beginning to end. Goalie was beast mode.

Didn't go the way I wanted, but games like this are what makes the WJC such a treat.

So many mental errors by the Americans. Don't know how you coach that. "Don't make bad passes. Don't overskate the puck. ... Ummm, okay coach!"

Wait Finland fans claimed this was one of the worst Finland teams in the last decade… how’d they dominate the US like that?

C.Hutson flop on 3v3 highlight all over the place. Canadians are very happy.

Jokes aside some of the mistakes USA were making in this game were extremely questionable. Almost like some of them never played puck before.

Augustine is gonna need to step up for the Americans to have a chance. He's been weak.
I wouldn't blame Augustine.
Finland's 2nd and 3rd goals weren't lucky bounces etc
Augustine didn't have any chance to even try to save those.

Alasiurua's goal in 1st period wasn't also soft goal it was goal-scorers goal.
And that Uronen's overtime goal was a close to being saved but the
puck bounced Augustine's glove and went in.

Augustine is not guilty USA's loss USA took too many idiotic penalties
but Finland's piss poor powerplay couldn't score those more than once
and thanks for that goes to Augustine who took many good saves and kept game tie and even.

USA would've lost more than 3-4 after overtime if Augustine wouldn't have played so well what he did.

That's easy to explain.
First we give the siima and then we pull matto alta.

Seriously said our 2005 age-group is not so deep if you look pure NHL talent.
Yes there are guys like Halttune, Kumpulainen and Vinni who may get some NHL games.

But mostly this Finnish 2005 born age group is more solid SM liiga / euro players.
