As for the UD box set, don't hold your breath, the fans of LA don't have much of a hockey card collecting tradition. There are maybe a dozen or three hardcore LA Kings collectors and most of them don't reside in LA. I'm one of them.

(I'm one of them who does reside in LA).

i see this different from looking at and attempting to collect Kings jerseys. the LA jerseys have been for years now carrying a higher price tag than probably 80% of the teams in the NHL. I am talking GW, team issued, authentics, replicas, vintage, etc. Every form of LA jersey sells at a premium. imo there is high demand for Kings gear, the league (what a surprise) and Upper Deck are just asleep at the wheel

Jersey demand is part of the Kings culture. Hockey cards are not. Whenever the Kings have card giveaways, there's always a ton left over. I actually am part of the market and watch the cards and the demand. It has been extremely easy in the past for someone like me to casually pick up the rarest of the rare Kings cards. Everyone who makes team sets, Kings team sets sit there for a long time.

Interesting. I didn't know this about the cards. I have bought a few over the past few seasons and a co-worker that is an avid collector gives me all the Kings cards he gets. I didn't realize the market on Kings cards was so poor.

I wish it was the same with jerseys.

Me too!

Also keep in mind in 2012 there were two companies with NHL licenses and neither made a set for the Kings.

UD will take any opportunity to make money of course and in the past went bankrupt twice because of over-aggressiveness. This time the banks that kept them open require all sorts of documentation of processes before allowing unconventional moves. I don't know if the banks are still there but probably UD kept the business-sane processes. But UD-internal stuff is hard to see, it's hard to see the exact numbers that made UD come to their 2012 conclusion.

So as a good external example, the secondary market, is that in 2012 UD made two new and significant special Stanley Cup insert sets...UD Day With The Cup and Black Diamond Stanley Cup Rings. They put the Kings on the 2013 versions and the Hawks on the 2014 versions (they commemorate last year's events on this year's cards). A typical BD Stanley Cup Ring is like $15 to $75...UD Day With The Cup is $50 to $200+. Across the board the Kings cards are worth 20 to 50% less than their Boston or Chicago counterparts.

I would love to! Should I resurrect the old Kings card thread? :P
