No he traded Redeen in the media after Reds refused to waive his NTC and it was just shitty thing to do to a long time Sens who gave everything to this team to try and pressure you out of town by getting the fans on your back.

Anyways, Murray also had a botched trade for Comrie he announced in the media when he was GM in Anaheim so it was his style, made Ottawa look like amateurs especially after the botched Heatkey to Edmonton trade Murray announced in the media as well
Murray was not innocent!

I really wish they made Heatley just play but even Alfie said that the situation was awkward and tense. I'd like to believe that everyone would be professional and play to the best of their ability, but emotions can run high and maybe it could've messed with the rest of the guys on ice performance.

Spezza also asked for a trade, but I think they could've been a bit more stern with him and gotten a similar return to the one they did for him at the deadline. If he performed during a contract year, may have been easier to move him and get a better return.
I don't care if the "situation was awkward and tense". Make them play the games. Don't trade good players for crap. I don't know why the Heatley situation was "awkward and tense" for the players on the team. Was he engaging in some relationship with another player's wife? Perhaps the "wife" should have been traded! :)

Couple things.
1. Spezza didn't ask for a trade. He said he basically told them he wasn't resigning if they're heading into a rebuild so if they want to get something for him he's open to being moved. Not quite the same as demanding out.

2. Heatley's trade return wasn't particularly bad. Michalek's knee just gave out. He was a good piece back. Bad luck that his knee issues were so recurring. Derailed a good career. Also in fairness Heatley's play fell off a cliff so like we wouldn't have even wanted him through the remainder of his contract with the benefit of hindsight.

I think I agree with you. I'd love to see a team refuse to be held hostage by a player not being happy with their on ice deployment, even though the team is winning. But reading that Alfie mentioned the awkwardness made it worth bringing up

Since we never got a real reason from Heatley, it leaves it pretty wide open for potential variables that might impact the room. After the EK/Hoff deal, it's hard to discount the possibility of similar absurdity. It's really hard to say the right way to handle it without knowing the behind the scenes details.

I loved Michalek, but that return was underwhelming. For us to not get a 1st round pick considering the salary that we paid to Heatley in a signing bonus. Michalek and the 2nd were the only pieces of value considering Cheechoo was declining before the trade.

For a 50g scoring top line forward, getting a 2nd line winger. a declining middle 6 winger, and a 2nd is very underwhelming.

Maybe teams could see Heatley's decline coming and his value wasn't as high as we all thought.
You're also missing the 3.5 million cheaper/year that Michalek's contract was.

We haven’t had a good GM in a very long time. We have never had an owner who could compete financially with most other teams in the league during the summer, or in taking on contracts.

We may have both right now, finally, but we’ll have to see what Staios’ stamp on the team looks like, and if we can continue to be a cap team.

Alright! You found one.

One player.

Our drafting under his watch was atrocious, maybe the worst we've ever had.

There are more, you only asked for 1

At least the players wanted to stay and win under Muckler, and the team won under Muckler, that changed under Murray almost immediately with his incompetent coaching hires and inability to make decent trades, and surrounding himself by hiring nitwits and a pervert at every level of management.

The team won because of all of the hard work done by the people that were hired before he arrived. How many pics did he waste on Russians? And yeah, Chara was just begging to stay. Nice move Mucks.

The team won under Muckler, it fell apart under Murray. Drafting didn’t save z Murray, it was basically the only thing he did well, every other file was fail from coaching to roaster to attendance to fan engagement to the legacy after he left - and it got toxic very very quickly

Whats your methodology?

Achievement in pro sports is not linear. 50 points is not half as good as 100 pounts. Stützle pacing for 100 points at his cap hit is amongst the most valuable contributions in the league.

Cousins may be cheap but so far I think he is below replacement level.

Muckler took over and basically coasted while overseeing the worst drafting period ever for the team. His manipulation of Hossa and subsequently losing Chara ended up being crippling. Plus his refusal to add decently at the deadline, including the GR debacle. Not sure how anyone could be impressed by the actual work he did. The aura and attitude was cool and all, but the team was built and he failed to put them over the top while the Leaf rivals made them their bitches. He also didn't contend with the insane version of Melnyk in the salary cap era of non cap spending. Murray had to roll handicapped budget squad after budget squad out there.

I don’t understand why people evaluate GMs without the context of their owners. Murray was handcuffed by Melnyk the entire time and the second he died, this franchise turned into a joke. That he held it together for as long as he did is a testament to him.

Staios will hopefully do better than his predecessors but he also doesn’t have to spend 80% of his time managing an egomaniac so he’s at a distinct advantage.

Just dollar for dollar comparisons.

Hard to really make up this list. There were some real obvious ones then it got harder. I valued Brady's hits , and that he has more goals than Stutzle. Brady has 104 hits. Tim has 49.It's not projecting outward.
You'll find it's not easy because some players play more/ less minutes. And yes Greig and Cousins could have been higher up the list.
Make up your list. Try it.
If you put every statistic into a computer and included salaries. There probably is a way to rank them but even then there would be disagreement.
It was easy to make the top of the list and the bottom of the list. But the players in the middle is hard to be that accurate. There is some opinion and guess work involved. Not an exact science.

Muckler defended his players, Murray threw everyone under the bus for, his coaches to his star players, players he traded for.

Muckler didn’t like the Ottawa media and it showed in his legacy writing, Murray would drink beer with them. When Kolavelv said the Ottawa media were a bunch of drunks it reflected the old boys attitude of Murray and the media around him, amateur hour but the media loved Murray and so he got all the good headlines.

Of course Murray reccomened and groomed Dorion to take over and advised Mkenyck to hire him, never talked about by fans, but Murray’s legacy is horrible, almost everyone he hired arent in the NHL from the coaches to his support staff.

Muckler had a great staff, had the two best coaches in Sens history, left a Stanley Cup finalist to Murray and it completely blew up in Murrays face almost immediatly and it remained a gong show the entire time he was here.

Wonder if Marshall Johnston is still around, would make a great advisor. As a previous poster said, he was the best GM this team ever had.

Looks like he's still alive at 83, but I've never heard his name since he was with Ottawa, so seems that ship has sailed. They've probably got the wise old man advisor covered with Martin lol.
