I find that after every Staios update/interview, I feel better and agree with his take.
I felt that knee-jerk gut reaction and then once I hear Staios speak, it makes more sense.

Exact opposite of Dorion.

If they trade Chychrun now that should come with some extra scrutiny.

Really hard to argue you are going to get more for him when teams are only getting one run with the guy vs 2.
There's always more teams that can join the bidding war when you get to the draft, you also have teams more willing to move their 1st rd pick when they know where it will land.

Teams also don't want to give up the roster players they have when they are heading into the the playoffs, so the assets open to being moved opens up come offseason too.

Weren't you saying they should move Chychrun now because they'd likely get less at the draft? I mean, I'm of the opinion that the time to move Chych is at the draft, but if I'm not mistaken, you were pushing for it to happen now.
I think the core of this team is good, it's the rest of the team (about 10 guys) that need to be upgraded on, but that is easier said than done. I agree, I think they should move Chychrun at the draft too & NJD are a team that has a mid-draft pick. The NJD are also weak on the left side whereby Chychrun could move into their top pairing with Hamilton when he is healthy. I like this idea because the Sens could walk away with one good forward & one good D in the top 12 at this yr's draft & still have another late 1st rd pick & 2nd rd pick similar to the Stutzle, Sanderson, Greig & Jarventie draft.

1st rd pick - Lindstrom C/LW or Levshunov RD
Chychrun trade - Yakemchuk RD or Chernyshov RW/LW/Greentree RW
1st Bost Cond - RW/RD
2nd rd - RD/RW

Listening to Staios on tsn 1200

"we learned a lot about our team"

Yeah, how little other GMs regard the pieces we want to get rid of, lol.
You sure you listened to him? That's not what he said

So Boris will possibly play Saturday in place of Kelly.

Steve said he thinks Boris is very competitive and has "offensive upside". I checked his junior and AHL stats which indicate he might have some offensive upside. We shall see.

The first quote was correct.

My impression was that he seemed pleased/surprised that some of his players were more highly thought of than he originally thought.

Yes I listened to it and the quote was correct. My impression was there might have been a lot of interest in players he obviously didn't want to move.... perhaps some of that was fellow GMs kicking tires on a new GM.

Hopefully it lays ground work for the draft.

I think we're lucky if we can get a 1st for Chychrun in the off-season. Clearly there was no good offer at this deadline, and the value will go further down a couple of months from now.

They do compete very hard against the best teams in the league, it's the let down against the crappy teams that is a huge puzzel that has to be corrected. Goals against continue to be a huge problem which means the goaltending & defence need to be upgraded as does the bottom six over the summer IMO. I think we have enough good players to fill out the top six & top D pairing after that it's wide open IMO.

I'd put Katchouk with Pinto & Batherson to see if he could jell with those two, having a good playmaker like Batherson on his line might actually help him provide some offence & having a guy with some jam might help the other two increase their intensity. I'd also promote Ostapchuk & Kleven as soon as he is healthy to see how these guys handle the NHL when teams are playing desperate tough hockey.

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux
Katchouk - Pinto - Batherson
Ostapchuk - Greig - Joseph
Smejkal - Kastelic - Sokolov/Kubalik

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Chychrun
Kleven - Guennette/Brannstrom

Sogaard - Korpisalo/Forsberg

More buyers, more bidders, you need to retain at this time of year,

There was zero chance they were retaining for next year.

Was absolutely pushing for it, and still hoping for it down to the wire. It became very apparent there wasn’t a market for him, or any of our guys, when trades began being made and we saw who was being traded and what teams were giving up.

I don’t think the draft is going to be much different, but at least there’s cap flexibility to actually be able to make a trade.

Unfortunately, they are going to be dealing with only 1 team again same as DBC. Teams are only going to make a deal with an agreed upon contract for July 1st, and Chych, like anyone in his position, is going to go where he wants. Unless there a team like Ottawa with DBC who will just wing it, which is highly unlikely.

There may be 5 teams calling about Chych in June, but that will be dwindled down to his preferred landing spot once he picks his spot.

He’s essentially got a NTC, because no team is trading for him without an extension.

The things Dorion pays premiums for people
Sounds like he may have laid some ground work for moves during the off season.

I really hope he’s able to solve the goaltending issues somehow

Like AJ Jakubec said, Dorion left Staios with a crap sandwich on his way out and that’s accurate such a big mess to clean up and I have no idea how he’s going to fix all the holes on this roster - challenging times ahead!
lol they call it a crap sandwich now but they weren’t this hard in Dorion when he was still employed.

Staios must like the team Dorion built if he's refusing to make any moves.
Kinda of scary he says they tried to expedite the process of getting to the next step by thinking outside the box. Really intrigued to hear about these moves for better or worse.

Correct but the big difference is the contract. Debrincat held all the cards going into the final year. We weren't going to get a team willing to rent him at 9 mil
