NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

When he first started doing Bruins games, I thought he did a good job because he called the game without all the rambling he does now ,and I was happy to see that pompous ass Arnold gone. NESN should ask him to resign today not a day later ,if he refuses fire his ass, like so many in the work force, if you cannot do the job you are replaced. I know I am coming off as heartless, but I don't care, he sucks and he is ruining the games for me. Those who think it but are not willing to say it stay silent, I said it for you.

My two hockey fanatic brothers and one of my nephews have a long running Bruins group text. Last night my nephew texted during the Lucic interview that Jack is visibly struggling to speak. It's like his entire body is trying to force the words out. He was right, the effect is far more disturbing if you can see him as well as hear him.

I also noticed Brick did the post-game Monty interview alone. That has been a disaster for Jack since last year. Perhaps NESN noticed that fact and are beginning to phase Jack out.

This is what I took out of it as well. It's one thing to hear it while you're watching the game, but when you're actually seeing Jack in the booth... man, it was just a hard watch... and hard listen.

he just needs to take the earpiece out/the headset off. his brain can no longer separate the jobs of listening/predicting what others are saying and speaking while thinking of what he'll say next. if they aren't going to remove him as the factor, they need to remove the distracting voices from his process. put him in a sensory-deprivation booth and slowly add the tools of his trade back, voices/noises/text near the end. his brain is overwhelmed and his tongue can't keep up. he's still there, lucid, capable, but it is slipping.
Probably just a tad easier to get someone else to do it.

I just feel bad for him because you can tell the passion is still there but it’s just tough to listen to. I really hope he’s alright. It’s at the point now where it’s not fair to him or to fans that have to listen.

Not sure how long they can keep trotting him out there every night, but they should really find a replacement and let him stay around the team and do little spot appearances.

Jack has a legacy in Boston. I've always been on the pro-Jack side of things, but I'm watching games this season (only watched highlights last season, not enough time to see full games), and NESN has to move on after this year. I feel bad for Jack and hope he's getting the best care possible. But he can no longer do the job. I will most likely be watching the opposing team broadcast from now on.

Watching a classic bruins game on NESN right now from 2018. Jack sounds like he’s talking at fast speed compared to now. Sad.

Edit: This game can’t be from 2018. Thornton is still on the team.

Jack is frustrated as he is only 66 but he knows Curt Gowdy was finished at 68 as was Ken Coleman at the age of 64. Ned Martin was fired by NESN at the age of 69. Bob Wilson quit in 1994 at the age of 65 when the Bruins and WEEI refused to pay him during the lockout. Johnny Most retired at the age of 66.

Fred Cusick was the exception as he walked away from the NHL at the age of 79 because he had trouble seeing the ice in the new arenas.

Jack is a year younger than Dale who retired last year. The Bruins made it clear to NESN that they wanted Jack back for the 100th season.

It's a sensitive matter but it is the circle of life.

I'm sure he's devastated to miss the trip to scenic Winnipeg in late December

I happily declined the opportunity to make the trip :)
