NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

It's one game and perhaps things will get better. But NESN are going to have to handle this very carefully. Not confident they're capable of that.
NESN doesn't have a great track record - Just Google Ned Martin

Johnny Most was forced to retire at 66 but he had severe health issues.

Jack got inspiration from Most

It just makes me sad.

I admit Jack's schtick hasn't been my cup of tea for a while now, but I do love the dude and his passion for hockey and the B's. He's an INCREDBILY nice human.

I hate to see him struggle like this, and I know it's gotta be killing him. And I'm sure when he does step/get pushed away, it's going to kill him even more. :(

I would take a load off his plate, kinda like what the Celtics did with Gorman. Don’t need to fully replace him but start getting the next guy ready

Great guy. At his peak the most entertaining play by play guy in the biz. I will always have a tremendous amount of respect for him.

I have no idea how this plays out but Jack will watch the tape when he gets home.

The pregame tease was awkward - no denying that and Jack made sure he did not attempt to pronounce Sophia's last name.

One thing I found odd was Jack did not speak about the passing of Rick Jeanneret and they were good friends.

Also coming up this season is NESN's 40th Anniversary in March.

The only small talk I had today with Jack was about Brooks Robinson.

I am gunshy right now as if you Google 'Jack Edwards' and use the news filter - THIS THREAD COMES UP SECOND

I am comfortable with everything I wrote in the thread.

As of right now, it is what it is.

As I’ve made well known, Jack isn’t my cup of tea.
I’m for rebooting the entire broadcast, Brick included.

Having said that, I wish Jack the best in terms of health and career.

My request is that we use this dedicated thread to discuss Jack and the broadcast in general so that the game day threads can be focused on the hockey.

I just hope he’s alright. Maybe it was just the first game of the year jitters but last night was rough for him. He was announcing like he had been hearing the rumors about him and was trying to articulate a lot.

I’m not sure the best course of action for him, so I won’t speculate. All I’m saying is if last night was a microcosm for what he will be providing in the booth then it’s probably time.

I don't know what's worse, Jack slurring his words and getting lost, or Jack slowing down his pronunciation to a snail's pace so he doesn't slur his words and get lost. Either way, something is wrong. I hate the guy's silly schtick, but I feel for him.

I thought he did OK for his first game. I'm sure he was a bit nervous as everyone is at the beginning of the season plus I'm sure he knows a lot of people are listening to him more closely than usual because of his speech issue.

I know how passionate he is & how he can get caught up in the excitement of a play- I really think if he can somehow remain calmer during those moments it will help him with his PBP pronunciation.

I wish him all the best.

Based on his speech pattern my guess is he had a minor stroke and is still recovering. He took care to make deliberate pauses last night that can help avoid mushing up words.

Far be it from me to suggest a man that could recover should retire, who knows what his financial situation is and we don’t have a right to demand someone quit their lively hood and passion due to health reasons. Everyone would want the same level of compassion.

It is painful to listen to, but I think Jack has earned our empathy and patience.

Getting old, getting ill, sucks. I wouldn't put any blame at his feet as he is clearly trying to deal with something and in his line of work it's an Everest of a climb. Having spent time with stroke patients it really seems like he is trying to recover from a minor one and relearning to process and speak.

As it stands, I have a very hard time believing that he will remain in the booth this year as that pre-season game was painful to listen to despite rooting for the guy.

Unless Brick picks up all the PBP commentary leaving spaces for Jack to callout hits and goals it just doesn't work. Even then it may turn out to be a downer because he is / needs to be so deliberate with his calls and it takes the emotion out of it as it isn't contemperous with the action anymore.

Hate to say it but he needs to hang them up and hopefully if the front office and NESN really are trying to do him a favour they collectively find a way for him to contribute during this season either in PR, event or other activities and get's someone in the booth that can call the game at pace and with some emotion.

It's super unfortunate and to use an analogy, it's like a lifetime soldier who fought battles and wars, ended up getting severely injured and partially paralyzed. You don't throw them back out there in the trenches just because they say they can still fight. You respect the past and help into the future by trying to find the appropriate manner in which that soldier can still contribute to the cause and help them to understand the importance of making that adjustment. And get them into PT and support them to try and walk again, just not in the trenches getting shot at...

If this is some type of "win it for the beaver" approach by NESN / B's front office, then they would be MUCH BETTER OFF calling it as that and stating that he got sick / ill / etc and they decided that they wanted to show that people with that issue / disability can still make it. Put that foot forward and I think a lot of people would be able to accept and back it. Obviously that means they are wed to the decision as they can't backtrack or side step (like with Miller) this year but man would it be good to see some spine from the FO on taking a moral + business decision.

The ignoring the elephant thing won't work and the more they let it go on, the more they look like assholes when/if they can him for a probable medical condition.

Time to call it NESN/B's.

I've been largely a defender of Jack over the years. But he is a chore to listen to now. He speaks so slowly and can't keep up with the game. I found it a chore to sit through, and frustrating.

I get the nostalgia of Jack Edwards. He was fantastic years ago, sharp, witty and fully engaged.

Today he isn’t. He’s struggling very badly to even keep up with the play. At one point he said “Save by Keyser” about 4-5 seconds after the shot happened. He can’t keep up.

You add in him trying to pronounce “Merkulov” - he tried like 7-8 different variations and not one was remotely close to his actual name.

It’s time.

I would still take the Jack from last night over a good many NHL PBP announcers. I didn't think he was all that bad considering where he was at last season. If he is actively working on improving then hopefully he can build back and get where he was a couple seasons ago.

His enthusiasm, and to some degree his unpredictable raves and rants, has been a big part of my enjoyment of Bruins broadcasts since he started doing PBP for the Bs. I have a lot of respect for Jack. I can't begin to imagine how tough life is for him right now. Have to wish him all the best and root hard for him to continue to get back on track and keep doing what he loves.

I can't stand Jack"s gimmick but this is well thought out and well stated. I wont miss Edward's when he is gone but it should be his call

Why should it be his call? Just curious on the logic there as he is unable to perform to normal standards in his job today and there is no noted explanation for it by ownership or the NESN team to articulate the "why" behind the current setup.

We don't but his employer does if it's negatively affecting their product.

I don't see how they can go on with Jack but it's not my call. Some here have said he sounded better than last season. I don't see it, but to each their own. It was painful to listen to. I basically heard the same Jack as last year, but slower. Someone metioned it in the GDT, he sounded sedated. He was obviously being very deliberate not to make mistakes, but it came across worse than if he just let it fly and got tongue twisted 3-4 times per period.

I’ll start off by saying that I was never a fan of Jack’s style but to each their own. I hope nothing but the best for him health wise and have an idea to maybe make the transition out of the booth easier for all parties involved. Why not give Jack a pre-recorded (to give him a chance to relax and edit as necessary) segment pregame highlighting the keys to the game - call it “Jack’s Tumbling Muffins” with some video/graphic splash. That will give him an opportunity to participate in the 100th in a meaningful way but also to be able to prepare his commentary without being challenged by his physical condition. I think that would be a win-win for everyone organizationally and allow him to step away from the booth but still be a part of the season.
