Player Discussion: Unpopular Opinion: Romanov Has Not Helped NYI Take The Next Step

But at this point in my life I see Romanov as a for sure top 4 dman and I'm happy with the trade whether the the pick used becomes a hall of famer or bust. Because it doesn't matter what that pick does, we don't know who we would have selected or how their development would be. Question is, are you ok with trading a 13th overall pick for a 22 year old top 4 dman? My answer is yes. We're gonna get years out of Romanov.

I'm happy with the trade too, it made sense at the time. Gave up the possibility of a higher upside for a cost controlled sure thing when you needed it... and we got George too who seems to be a good find.

Justin Bourne kicked the idea around of wondering the benefit of a GM that exclusively trades 1st rounders for young talent when it becomes available. The 20-25 guys. I wondered how that would play out, you do need the ELC space and I think that's where the issue is but it's a fun idea to kick. Just watched Jiricek go for what would be a 20+ first rounder

The Jiricek thing is interesting because he could conceivably go supernova... but for a first, second, third, fourth, and young guy who has already made a couple of NHL appearances you have a lot of outs there. The second is in 2027 so it might be a long time until we know who won that trade

He seems to have a chunk of games where he looks like he has taken a corner, then it seems he regresses to some of the types of plays he made when he first got here. His regular partner (Dobson) has not been good, so I know he has changed partners here and there so I will cut him some slack.

Dobson can't be overlooked.

Have my doubts about the system as well.

That's fair, especially with the makeup of our team, I just didn't care for the pick/draft class

I’m not sure how one defines moving the needle but imo there are less than 50 players in the NHL that truly move the needle and the Isles don’t have any of them.

I would say Sorokin is a needle-mover. Otherwise, yeah.

To expect one player who has proved nothing to move the needle seems unrealistic ?

Bottom line is...We have other defensemen that need to be moved first and fast! i.e - Pelech and Mayfield.

But he definitely doesn't move the needle nor should we have expected that. I watched him while playing in Montreal and I thought he was average at best. But we can live with him, if we improve the other 2 weak links on the back end (Pelech & Mayfield)

Our defense to be honest is a complete mess. To me, only Pullock is a lock to say for now. I'm open to moving everyone else - in Dobson, it would need to be a haul, but he's definitely not untouchable anymore. Not the way he's regressed

I wasn't so enamored with him initially with all the comparisons to Kasper. He played horribly under Lambert and I thought he must have lacked brain cells but then I realized he was just following orders from Lambert and he's obviously brain dead so... Under Roy he has been improving with each game, upping his physicality at the right opportunity, and just playing much smarter. He's a keeper and the fact that we got George as well with the trade this has to be Lou Lamiorellos best transactions as the Isles GM.

If you're picking a player in

If you give up a top 15 pick in any draft you should get back someone with more talent/upside/impact than Romanov.

If you're picking at 15, you can't get a really good player.

Also, trading 15 should get you a really good player.

Romanov was a bigger loss when out of the line up than Pelech

Romanov has taken a step forward in his development the past two years. His physicality has really struck me, his decision making has improved; I generally feel comfortable when he’s out there defending. He’s a solid D man, it was a solid trade.

Just to expand further on this, especially when judging Lous moves as whole.

Saw someone say in another thread that the Horvat, Palmieri, Romanov, Pageau trades were on paper wins.

What handcuffs Lou in my eyes is not getting say a Jake Guentzel. Individually all wins IMO. Would do every single one again.

Just wish we could mix in a sure fire 75+ point player. Yes I know, easier said than done.

Lou acquired Romanov the season after the isles had a gaping hole in their defense, signed an 800 year old Chara, and missed the playoffs for the first time in Lou’s tenure.

So, Lou was looking to acquire a cost controlled defenseman and plug a top 4 hole. He also guaranteed a return on that pick when the Isles were still in their window under cap constraints.
