Think you’re severely upset overstating the shots and chasing part. Nashville threw everything at the net. Of course their shots were high. And people seem to forget if we’re “chasing” someone else is trying to keep away. Sometimes containing a guy instead of using the extra effort is the smart play while the other u guy wears himself down.

Not sure what I'm over stating -
We were outshot by a fair margin and we spent a lot of time in our end chasing Pred's - that is not a good thing any way you spin it.

Maurice and every coach I have ever heard have only mentioned high danger chances as really something they pay attention to. Not shot on net. After watching the game I dont think nashville had many more then then we did. They also lost like 10 in a row were highly motivated and 1 of the better home teams in league. If laine and scheifele could shoot straight it would have been over after 2. Never felt like them scoring 2nd goal was inevitable.

Helle has been terrific this year..he is the #1 reason the jets are 2nd in the central right now..... its just too bad he never played this well last year when the jets had a better team in front of him

Yeah, it's like the Jets perform better when the expectation is low :):::raising my hand::::: I didn't think they'd go far with this AHL defense). The attitude seems to be: "hockey talking heads think we suck because of our depleted D, we'll show 'em! Suck it, haterz!" :D

Teams can run around and hit us all day. Won’t matter. We won’t go out of the way to throw pointless hits and if we take a hit we get back up and keep playing like it doesn’t matter. Seems like a mature way to play.

One could argue it's the safe way to play. It's pretty simple to see we wont win any physical battles. They are just playing to their strengths and staying away from weaknesses

Super happy with the current winning ways.
I still expect to see an up and down season.

Lost in all of this is our improvement in PIM's.
Last I heard we had taken the fewest penalties in the league.
That's insane for a team that routinely kept a standing reservation in the sin bin.

Dallas is just the team Laine needs to get the multi goal games rolling!
Weird the team gets smaller on D ... less penalties or maybe the refs make more calls on the big defencemen.

You cannot simply ignore weaknesses and hope they go away.

This problem becomes much more magnified in the playoffs. The Jets better figure out a way to address it before then.

The book on the Jets right now is:
  • Dump the puck in away from the goalie
  • F1 attacks the retrieving D aggressively
  • F2 positions to address that D's out play

The way to counteract this strategy is to neutralize those attacks by minimizing the impact of that retrieving D getting hit and seperated of the puck.

Curious question: How many times did you see a team employ this strategy when Dustin Byfuglien is the retriever?

An honest answer to that will lead you to the solution.

I personally think we are way to soft and the last few games has shown other teams are starting to pick it up too.

I'm hoping we are going to keep finding ways to win while getting bullied. But it could swing the other way as well. Especially in playoffs

How so?
Would it be that since they are light and fast, they are good chasers? What happens when they catch them?
You can't continue to allow teams to dominate you in your own end -

Staying away from physical games because they are one of the softer teams is how so.

Teams will continue to dominate around the boards and any place on the ice skating slows down and body position becomes more important.

Up and down the ice and in the offensive zone while the opposition is skating backwards we are second to none IMO.

One we need to push players off the puck or take hugd hits and stay on the puck we are very soft

Chasing, no. That’s never good. All you can do is try to minimize the damage.
But Nashville took a lot of shots last night that were not threatening. Hell our first goal came off a missed shot(they missed a bunch too which kinda goes with what I’m getting at). I’d be curious to know the scoring chances because they just threw a lot to the net without much purpose.

Who said pointless hits? Anyone who plays hockey will say when you are under a lot of heavy forecheck pressure it disrupts your breakout, your zone exits and tires your defenders. Additionally, knowing a hit is coming will rush decisions and force mistakes.

I don't advocate for the Jets to start running around, taking themselves out of position for hits a la Mark Stuart. However, doing something simple like delaying slightly on puck retrieval to be the hitter and not the hittee is one of the small things you can do to weaken this approach from your opponent.

I think the key will be to balance things. A hit to take a guy off the puck is always welcomed. Lowry or someone blowing a guy up every once in awhile is good. Simply “finishing your check” to me tends to be unnecessary unless you can target certain players and play discipline. Playing the forecheck hard while not losing position and staying disciplined is key. Hitting for the sake of hitting is what I don’t really long for.

Couldn't agree more -
We were mowed over in our own end and we were outshot badly - Helle saves the day.
The Pred's pretty much had their way with us in our own end - we did keep a lot of it to the outside but we spend a lot of time in our D zone chasing, taking shots and wasting energy.
Any way you look at it, this is not irrelevant and will catch up with us eventually.
Our presence in the front of the net is also an issue - they were hacking away at Helle on a number of occasions and other than BooLeeOOO, we watched this take place.

Sorry, no disrespect but I find this to be a bit hyperbole. You've kind of been on this train from the start of the year, you'd think it would catch up to us already. Nashville goes hard to the net, they like to hack away, did it when Trouba and Buff were here, didn't stop them. It's the NHL, teams aren't going to back away from it because you clear them out. I'm just not buying it.

The Jets did a good job with bodies in front, boxed out well and let Helle see the puck. The cycle was kept to the outside and the Jets didn't give up much between the dots and below the hash marks. Nashville went high to low, low to high and very little dot to dot. It's funny, the Jets cycle the crap out of teams and they get accused of not creating any offense. Teams do it against the Jets and the storyline is we got run over. Helle was great again, hardly a stand on his head performance though, he did what good goalies do.

Blown coverages and overall talent level are still the biggest issue for this D, not getting run over.

I disagree with the irrelevant comment. When you get pounded the entire game and don't answer, you are going to get worn down, rushed and make mistakes.

If you are a bigger guy and you are the aggressor you mitigate some of that. Poolman and Beaulieu need to incorporate more of that into their game.
Pounded the entire game? Nah, disagree. I thought Poolman stepped up his physical play in the back half of the game actually. No problem with how our D played all things considered.

The problem is not so much not breaking up the cycle. Jets always have a couple of failed attempts of passing the puck to clear the zone before they get tired and let things spiral. Those weak pass attempts to no one drive me crazy. I understand they are trying to make a play but sometimes just fire it off the glass please. And Helly needs to freeze the puck more.

I saw most of the Jets do a very good job of delaying on retrieval. You don't need to become the hitter in those situations, you just need to protect the puck, absorb the hit and wait for support. Morrissey and Pionk are very good at it, much like Enstrom was back in the day. The issue is when their partners are out of position and don't come support.

An aggressive forecheck rushing decisions is one thing, rushing decisions because you're concerned about contact is another. I don't see the Jets doing much of the latter. Quite the opposite really.

I think what it seems you are overstating is the direct effect that had on the game. The tone of your posts, intended or not, seems to be that the Jets were dominated and lucky to have won. That's not the game I saw, I thought they handled the game well and the Preds were lucky not to have been down more, especially with the Laine breakaway and the Scheifele chance from the left slot area. Honestly, Nashville didn't do much that impressed me, I thought they were a bit of a mess.

I watch these numbers night after night and feel like we're getting jobbed. They gave Laine 2 HD Corsi and no one else got one. I can think of at least a few others off the top of my head. Scheifele one timer just wide was 10' out ehlers spinarama wrist shot, hell even his goal was near slot. Wheeler redirect. Is it just me?

I have kind of been scratching my head at this as well lately. It would be nice to know what criteria they are using because I also thought we had well over 2 high quality scoring chances yesterday.

The stat is by no means perfect... It's about shot location, is it a rebound etc.

Jets had 2 high danger chances, 11 medium danger for a total of 13 scoring chances.

Dont trust these numbers Who ranked them 31st. You telling me they are worse then Toronto. That isnt possible. Lot of bad teams defensively in the league. Big difference between their 1st games and last 10 games I would assume too.

They need to start incorporating passing data into it. Jets are looking to generate off of quick cross crease passes which forces the goalie to move. Id wager some of those medium chances would have been high dangerous ones if that element was incorporated.
