No one has to trade for Ullmark but the Bruins have to trade him if they want Swayman. So Bruins have little leverage.

He is not getting a haul. How many teams can even afford him without money going back to the Bruins?

Depending on the contract or position the Bruins could take some salary back. Given it's a position of need. The argument that we can't get anything because we need cap space is false. We could move other pieces for lesser returns to create space to maximize assets/return for higher tier players. There's a very real false narrative going on. The jets are trading their starter and want to continue to compete so they are a strong target in that scenario. The Pens, Leafs, Canes, Hawks and so on that are looking for a goalie and Ullmark will be one of the very best available at a low cap hit locked in for two years. There is strong value there and a market for him

The jets arent trading Hellebuyck to pay for Ullmark that would be a stupid move.
Leafs arent running a 10 million dollar goalie tandem. They will go cheap like varlamov
Canessure maybe.
Lamo you think the Hawks are going to give up any assets?

The Pens possible but I don't see them giving up significant assets.

After watching goaltending flop this playoffs no team is going to pay big.

Bruins will get something based around a 2nd and small add.

I like Ullmark, but the Sabres need players that want to be here. Linus had that opportunity and chose to leave.
Well, we don't really know how it all happened, only rumors. Ullmark is a good goalie and I would like him to stay. Now we have not been able to find a decent goalie for three years.

Hart, Gustavsson and others have made it a buyer’s market. Plenty of options for needy teams and the two teams in SCF have both been using hot hand which will prevent teams from overpaying IMO.

Something that hasn't been mentioned in here: Ullmark has a full NMC right now that turns into a 16 team NTC in July. The Bruins likely wouldn't be able to trade him before July due to that NMC, and the market they'll be working with will be really limited by Ullmark's NTC.

I think any Ullmark trade is going to look very similar to Vegas trading Fleury, they'll give him up for nothing and they'll just take the cap space. I just don't see any situation where the Bruins are in a negotiating position to get anything back for him. It's either give away Ullmark for nothing on one of the 16 teams on his NTC or risk losing Swayman to an offersheet they can't match.

People will try to diminish the offersheet risk because "no one ever does it", but why wouldn't a rival of the Bruins do exactly that? Their cap structure is basically begging other teams to offersheet Swayman. If a team like Pittsburgh, who desperately needs a goalie and has a GM that was a big time rival of the Bruins, looks at that situation, why wouldn't they offersheet Swayman?

Hellebuyck is in the last year of his deal and there are a lot of rumours he's on his way out seeing as he's in the last year of his deal. Maybe the Jets want to make sure they get something for him if they don't believe they can retain him past this year. If they do that they will need to either trade those assets or others for another goalie.

Leafs won't be running a ten million tandem because you can almost bet Murray is traded at a cost or bought out. Unless you expect Samsonov to get five per as well. I guess that's possible but I wouldn't count on it.

Blackhawks need to add pieces and maybe they go with one of the said cheap vet goalies or whoever will come but the need is there.

Senators fans have expressed interest

Sabres fans are hot and cold but also looking for a goalie

There is a market for goalies and there are some good ones available or possibly available. There are the second tier as well but Ullmark is firmly in the upper tier for sure. Hart is certainly another interesting addition to the market and maybe a good target for the Hawks because of his age.
Pens agreed are interesting but new management usually likes to make a splash

Okay, who are these guys?

The only guys who make substantial money without any sort of trade protection on the Bruins are DeBrusk, McAvoy, Grzelcyk and Reilly. Reilly also sucks, so you'd have to pay to move him regardless. And the Bruins have basically no assets either, they don't have a 1st or 2nd this year or next year.

The Bruins have $4.9 million in cap space with a roster of 7F, 7D and a goalie. Even if you can pay to get out of Reilly's deal, they still only have $7.9 million in cap space and it sounds like they're losing their 1C to retirement. What's the solution here that doesn't involve losing one of Swayman or Ullmark?

Boston went all-in last year and pretty much destroyed their cap for this year. There's no getting out of that or playing hardball to make that work. Either they trade Ullmark in a Fleury type of deal or they will lose Swayman to an offersheet. Considering how few assets they actually have right now, a Swayman offersheet is probably a blessing in disguise for them.

Huh ? Your adding in backup goalies for a buyers market ..

Hellebuyck and Hart okay but teams aren’t giving them away either so not sure I’d call that a buyers market.

So is Swayman a backup goalie too?

Gustavsson had a .931 save% in 39 games last year. Swayman and Gustavsson actually have extremely comparable stats, both are at a .920 career save% in 66 games for Gustavsson and 88 games for Swayman.

Either way they aren’t giving him away if you believe he’s ready for a starting role.
Bruin fans all believe Swayman was ready 2 years ago Sweeney just wasn’t gonna throw him to wolves sorta speak cause during that time we’d run two rookie goalies

I don't think Swayman is a backup either, I was saying you shouldn't call Gustavsson a backup because he's also a really good young goalie.

But regardless, I think the Bruins basically have to either trade Swayman at the draft or trade Ullmark literally the second his NMC goes to a 16 team NTC. If they play hardball with Ullmark and try to get a great return for him, Swayman will get an offersheet from someone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they sign Swayman before it comes to that ..hmm thought there was a way to prevent offersheets too like filing a qualifying offer or something I certainly could be wrong here tho ..lol

I do think your on to something about them figuring out who they’ll move cause of cap crunch situation not sure it’s manageable having both unless they move cap out from defence and possibly a forward too.

I think Swayman probably just gets traded at the draft, the same way that the Bruins traded Hamilton at the draft for what his offersheet compensation looked like.

Ullmark having a full NTC until July really complicates things. Can Boston trade Ullmark fast enough after July 1st to be able to prevent a team from offersheeting Swayman? I just think they'd probably rather keep Ullmark and just get a haul for Swayman at the draft.

I'd offer the Penguins 2024 1st and New Jersey's 2023 3rd (which they have right now) for Swayman at the draft and basically say "if you won't take this, we're going to offersheet Swayman the second free agency opens".

Why does it matter if a player has trade protection? Doesn't mean they can't be traded. But you listed two players that could be on the move in Gryz and JDB although I think they've prefer to keep the later. They can buy out Reilly and get an eight hundred k cap him for this season. I think they'll try and move Hall and with a ten team no trade that shouldn't be much of an obstacle. Also, just because we are trading players doesn't mean they'll only go for picks and prospects. It's certainly not going to be easy to do what they need to do but moving Hall for say a second or even a third for sake of argument clears up six million. Let's say we get back a three million dollar player that fills a roster spot and clear three million. Buyout is another two plus for Reilly. I'm not saying they are keeping Ullmark I'm saying they have options to move money.
