Scorecards be dammed that was not a close fight, O'Malley had no clue on how to fight an active wrestler.
Tell me you're a casual without telling me you're a casual.Doesn’t mean merabs style isn’t boring as f***. Glad you like watch people lay on each other for 5 rounds lmao.
In fairness an Olympic gold medalist wrestler didn’t know how to fight that guy, I don’t think it’s so much of a deficiency on their end as much as it is Merab is a freakScorecards be dammed that was not a close fight, O'Malley had no clue on how to fight an active wrestler.
You don’t know ball, he does not lay n pray. Go watch Muay Thai, sounds like that’s what you wantDoesn’t mean merabs style isn’t boring as f***. Glad you like watch people lay on each other for 5 rounds lmao.
It would be a hell of a match, tend to agreeIn fairness an Olympic gold medalist wrestler didn’t know how to fight that guy, I don’t think it’s so much of a deficiency on their end as much as it is Merab is a freak

As an aside I think Umar beats him
The thing that makes if even funnier is that earlier they were saying Herb is the best in the game, then all unanimously being like wtf is he doingThere was a moment in the fifth round when Merab was feeding O'Malley shots against the cage in stand-up and Herb was telling them to "work". I mean wtf are you talking about bud? Even the commentary was unanimous in questioning his instruction.
My guess is that Grasso wanted to improve in the stand up exchanges (every round starts there), and was comfortable with her ground game. She probably didn't expect Shevchenko to be that wrestling heavy since she really wasn't in the other 2 fights. Sure Shevchenko had takedowns and some top time but how do you predict that one of the best strikers in the division (who you've already submitted) is going to turn to pure wrestling.Let's see Valentina-Fiorot next. Grasso is one of my favorite WMMA fighters but no need to see that 4 times in a row. I wonder if that strategy of conceding takedowns to go for subs from the bottom was a dumb gameplan, or if she just was not practising takedown defense enough in this camp?
Umar has the skills to beat Merab for sure but he can't look as tentative as he did to start the Sandhagen fight or else Merab will overwhelm him and score early. As an aside I think Umar beats him
I think Umar saw those teeps to the body O’Malley caught Merab with in round 5 and his mouth started watering. My guess is that Grasso wanted to improve in the stand up exchanges (every round starts there), and was comfortable with her ground game. Grasso needs to realize that just because Diego Lopes is her BJJ coach it doesn’t mean she has his ability off her back. Just an incredibly low % game planThe Sphere was way cooler on TV than I thought it would be and I wasn't expecting such a production. I thought it was going to be like "look at these cool graphics" not a story of Mexico. I think it was cool and would like to see them take another crack at it eventually, but I do think it is flawed concept. Like, let us blow your mind with this media presentation, now stop everything, here's an MMA fight that may or may not suck. A little jarring.
Merab-O'Malley followed the most likely script. Pretty damn thorough by Merab. Not much to even cling to in a rematch if you're Team O'Malley. I don't think Merab is boring because even though he's not a finisher, he's very active.
Valentina-Grasso - Congrats to Valentina. Winning the belt back is not easy to do, especially at her age. But, man. Pathetic performance from Grasso. The takedowns played a pretty big role in the second fight. Didn't look like she was prepared for them at all. If her plan was to accept being taken down and play BJJ off her back against Valentina, what a terrible gameplan. I get it, she choked her out in the first one. But that was a lightning fast moment that she jumped on. Completely different than setting something up off your back. And if you don't get the sub, you're giving away the round.
I'm not shocked Lopez won, but I am surprised how dominant it was. I don't know if Ortega ever completely recovered from getting rocked in R1.
I wouldn't suggest that gameplan for Lopez either. Submitting championship level fighters off your back happens, but not that often and again you're giving away the round if you don't get it.Grasso needs to realize that just because Diego Lopes is her BJJ coach it doesn’t mean she has his ability off her back. Oh for sure, it’s not a good game plan for anybody. But Lopes at least has a legitimately dangerous guard. Just because you're comfortable off your back, doesn't mean you're winning the fight from there. Grasso looked completely fine to just slowly lose a fight and play BJJ practice in a title fight. Just a low IQ gameplan and I didn't hear much urgency in the corner either. Very surprising because she actually realized some success on the feet previously.Oh for sure, it’s not a good game plan for anybody. But Lopes at least has a legitimately dangerous guard.
