That would be great. Once Chabot’s contract is up after 2027/28 he would become part of the top 4.I think I'd look at Scott Mayfield as a comparable. 3.5 x 7-8.

I think it could be done pretty reasonably . What can we sign him for 3 years? He is UFA in 2029.. so 1 year out.I wonder what it would take to get Kleven on an 8 year deal.
Kleven plays some of the most sheltered minutes in the league. He's doing a serviceable job right now, but he's not the big physical go to shut down guy that we hope he'll develop into. An 8 year deal at $3.5 million aav could backfire hard for a team like us that already has cap issues.
It always takes more time to develop the big defenders. I would say he'll be worthwhile in a year or two.Kleven plays some of the most sheltered minutes in the league. I fully believe in him progressing in his development. But signing any 3rd pairing LD to 8 years right now just doesn't seem like the best idea.I mean, he's not that player right now but the guy will almost certainly develop and become a more dependable player, in more situations. That being said there is no way I would sign him to an 8 year contract. Unless it was under $1.5m AAV. Signing 3rd pairing D, or 4th line F, to max term deals is not a prudent move, IMO.
I’m fairly sure the poise Kleven shows holding the puck to make the correct breakout pass doesn’t come from sheltered minutes.Kleven plays some of the most sheltered minutes in the league. The idea of signing him now for 8 years is that he moves into the top 4 once Chabot’s contract is up. Kleven plays the solid defender role while Yakemchuk comes off his ELC and takes over as a puck mover / offensive presence in place of Chabot.I mean, he's not that player right now but the guy will almost certainly develop and become a more dependable player, in more situations. You don’t think Kleven is a top 4 D in waiting ?lmao

I’ve seen enough to take the chance.Pulled this from Natural Stat Trick Defensive Pairs - Natural Stat Trick
Pairings that Kleven is on are bottom 3 in defensive zone starts. Green relies on Chabot, Jensen, Sanderson and Hamonic to do the heavy lifting there. He is literally getting easier minutes than them. Kleven is also bottom 3 in offensive zone starts.
He's a rookie who's made some mistakes and is holding his own. Coach doesn't trust him too much in our own zone or the opponents zone because he's still working on both his defensive and offensive game.
He's literally a rookie that we're properly developing and the last thing we need is to throw a long-term contract at him when we haven't even seen what he can do with more development. He's played more than 19 minutes 3 times in his career. I'm sure he can become a top 4 defender, but there's a lot of development left.

What rookie Dman comes into the league and plays great physical defense right away? Guys come in and play well offensively but still make a ton of mistakes in their own end. Give him another season and he will be fine.Kleven plays some of the most sheltered minutes in the league. AbsolutlyOf course he's sheltered, he's a rookie playing on the bottom pairing with our 6th, 7th or 8th Dman as his partner.
That said, I see no reason to jump head first into an 8 year deal, he's not likely to sign one that is too cheap if he sees himself as a future top 4 guy.
I think we'll probably sign him to a three year deal.
You don't feed steak to a baby.Absolutly
And I tend to give big time credit to Green for that
He is blending everybody real well so far
A bit like Boucher used to do when we went deep in the PO
But but….carnivore diet!!You don't feed steak to a baby.
I'll go pickup a vitamix from costco, we can put the steak through it and have a nice puré that even the babies can enjoy. But but….carnivore diet!!
Carnivore babies eat carnivore diets. We’re all carnivores just ask Joe or Jordan or even Jakob.
Kleven has stepped in and played a solid role as a #6 guy. I've never suggested otherwise. What rookie Dman comes into the league and plays great physical defense right away? Samuelson is the only real comparison for his player type. 7 years 30 mill, 4.3 AAV signed after 54 games and 12 points at 19 minutes a night. An 8 year contract wouldn't make sense for either side. Because for it to not be too much risk for the team, he would have to lock in at a really low value like #6D money, but if he does that he risks leaving millions on the table.
It would have to be one of those strange situations like when Jarnkrok signed a 6 year 2M contract after breaking out as a top 9 forward.
There aren't even any real comparables to point to. I'd he signs an extension to tomorrow, I'd probably guess 2M x 2 years, give or take a few 100k in either direction. So I don't know how you'd extrapolate that to a reasonable 8 year deal when players in his role never sign those kind of contracts after 1 year of NHL experience.
