Player Discussion Tyler Kleven (D) at 44th Overall (Sens traded up)

Kleven plays some of the most sheltered minutes in the league. He's doing a serviceable job right now, but he's not the big physical go to shut down guy that we hope he'll develop into. An 8 year deal at $3.5 million aav could backfire hard for a team like us that already has cap issues.

I wonder what it would take to get Kleven on an 8 year deal.
I think it could be done pretty reasonably . What can we sign him for 3 years? He is UFA in 2029.. so 1 year out.
I like Kleven and we could likely save over 8 years... maybe 8x4 over 3 we maybe could go 2.75 x 3 and pay him 4+ later
Chabot is on the books currently until 2028. Going 3 with Kleven would put him and Chabot up for contracts at the same time.

I entirely disagree with everything here.

I have felt as comfortable with Kleven out defensively as any of our D. In fact sometimes I think I am expecting too much from a guy who just turned 23 and playing his first full season in NHL.

He will only get better and better and I think it's wishful thinking he will sign for that because he will know he can cash in higher in 4 years from now.

It always takes more time to develop the big defenders. I would say he'll be worthwhile in a year or two.

I mean, he's not that player right now but the guy will almost certainly develop and become a more dependable player, in more situations. That being said there is no way I would sign him to an 8 year contract. Unless it was under $1.5m AAV. Signing 3rd pairing D, or 4th line F, to max term deals is not a prudent move, IMO.

I fully believe in him progressing in his development. But signing any 3rd pairing LD to 8 years right now just doesn't seem like the best idea.

Plus he won't cost too much even if he gets any better. I look at other defensive LDs that can play on the 2nd pairing as comparisons:
  • Seigenthaler 5 years $3.4 aav
  • Samuelsson 7 years $4.2 million aav
  • Alex Vlasic 6 years $4.6 million aav
Each of those guys are better than Kleven and got paid. We can easily bridge Kleven below $3.5 million and then extend him again around $4 million if he can start being a quality shut down guy that's playing 18-19 minutes per game.

I’m fairly sure the poise Kleven shows holding the puck to make the correct breakout pass doesn’t come from sheltered minutes.

The idea of signing him now for 8 years is that he moves into the top 4 once Chabot’s contract is up. Kleven plays the solid defender role while Yakemchuk comes off his ELC and takes over as a puck mover / offensive presence in place of Chabot.

Pulled this from Natural Stat Trick Defensive Pairs - Natural Stat Trick

Pairings that Kleven is on are bottom 3 in defensive zone starts. Green relies on Chabot, Jensen, Sanderson and Hamonic to do the heavy lifting there. He is literally getting easier minutes than them. Kleven is also bottom 3 in offensive zone starts.

He's a rookie who's made some mistakes and is holding his own. Coach doesn't trust him too much in our own zone or the opponents zone because he's still working on both his defensive and offensive game.

He's literally a rookie that we're properly developing and the last thing we need is to throw a long-term contract at him when we haven't even seen what he can do with more development. He's played more than 19 minutes 3 times in his career. I'm sure he can become a top 4 defender, but there's a lot of development left.
