As long as he's not called up to the big club I'm happy. Let him cook in junior, we already have Thomson and JBD waiting to show us what they have

A player who has been in the CHL for 4 years has much, much, much less to benefit from a 5th and overage 20 year old season compared to a player who has been in the NCAA (in bottom and mid pairing roles) for 2 seasons.

Kleven definitely isn’t further along in his development than most 02’ CHLers drafted in 2020, especially those drafted in the first 3 rounds.

I get what you're saying and it's a valid point. I just think there's pros and cons in either sticking with college or going to the AHL. Yeah, college will provide a more linear curve and be given more responsibility. The AHL is a place where he can get more pro experience, more games, more practice.

Most NHL management would put these guys in pro if it were their choice to be made.

There's a lot of benefit for Kleven to go to Belleville. More games, better competition, pro coaching, etc. And besides, if he was in the CHL right now there wouldn't even be this debate. It would be the opposite where we'd be thinking he wasn't progressing well to stick around in junior as an overager.

From Kleven's perspective, staying in university is more a personal choice. Does he want to be top dog on campus with college girls or live in Belleville?
coaching at UND is some of the best out there for development,

There are pros and cons to either route, AHL has more games, UND gives him more time to hit the gym (apparently he still needs to fill in his frame and get stronger). In the NCAA, he's going to be relied on as an all situation defender, in Belleville he's likely on the bottom pair right now.

I'd leave him in the NCAA myself, but admittedly I'm no expert.

NCAA for another year. Kleven was always a bit of a project player with size and tools.

If you leave him at UND he gets a chance at being the cornerstone on D...and that should help his development. I'd rather he get another year of development at a high level but with the expectation of being an all-around guy rather than turning pro just to bang bodies.

The Sens don't need this guy yet. Let him develop a bit more and hope it helps him be a better player when he does graduate.

Has it been confirmed if he spends another year in college?

No and he can take as long as he needs. I think so long as he signs before the end of the NHL season then he'll burn a year. Could be that they are arguing over ELC or PTO (this doesn't burn a year and he can go directly to Belleville).

Good for him, I was also hoping he would leave school early, but this shouldn't hurt his development in the least. I also hope that he gets much more responsibility handling the puck & playing in every situation with UND, it can only benefit his overall game..

The extra year at UND is the right development route IMO. Certainly adds anxiety about him staying in school and walking but the recent additions (with hopefully another D coming) will make the Sens a very attractive team to join just on the edge of competing.

Was surprising to see how often he was on the right side. I knew he was capable but if he legit is capable of being able to play RD in a pinch that obviously makes him even more valuable to us.

If you want to see more of his play Youtube has 3 full games from this season.
Here are two regular season games:

Here is the final playoff game that his team played.

From this Mendes article - Senators prospect Tyler Kleven's journey from backyard rink to Team USA: 'He deserves all the credit'

This season, he’s played plenty of shifts as a right-side defenceman which has been a transition for the left-shooting defenceman. But his coach convinced him to make the switch so that he could be more attractive as a professional defenceman down the road.

“I told him, ‘If you can play right side, that’s six jobs you can go for in the NHL. If you’re playing left side and only the left side, those are only three jobs,’” explained Berry. “When you’re playing right side, you’ve got six jobs available because you’re more flexible. There’s a lot of guys who can’t do that.”

Yeah, that was the right move. He needs to play a larger role to develop more. Had many back and forth's in this thread with posters who were sure he would leave.

Smart coach. Probably sees him as a fringe/depth D guy and wants to maximize his versatility and opportunity.

Concur with above sentiment. Why go to UFA and end up toiling in the minors on a minimum contract when you can join an up and coming team that's also shallow on D, where half the roster is your age, and you were teammates at national, international, and college level for years with 3-4 guys.

Odds of him developing into a shoe-in on any NHL roster are almost non-existent. More likely to get NHL time as a call up with Ottawa where he has players/friends advocating for him.

I see plenty of potential in Kleven to be able to crack the lineup as a bottom pairing D man. I think he could become a valuable defensive shut down D man with high end physical play and with some upside. IMO he has improved every year .. he cracked the WJC squad 2 years in a row, As someone that was not too keen on the move up to take him at the draft .. I have really come around on him and I like his potential. He is one of my favorite prospects now. He will in all likelihood see some time the AHL but there is nothing wrong with that. I have no problem with him going back for another year at UND which we know is an excellent program but he could have come out and played in the AHL this year and the Sens pushed for him to come. Bring on the K-Train.

Agree completely, IMO he could be Holden's replacement on the 3rd pairing LD when Holden's contract is done.
