A player who has been in the CHL for 4 years has much, much, much less to benefit from a 5th and overage 20 year old season compared to a player who has been in the NCAA (in bottom and mid pairing roles) for 2 seasons.
Kleven definitely isn’t further along in his development than most 02’ CHLers drafted in 2020, especially those drafted in the first 3 rounds.
coaching at UND is some of the best out there for development,There's a lot of benefit for Kleven to go to Belleville. More games, better competition, pro coaching, etc. And besides, if he was in the CHL right now there wouldn't even be this debate. It would be the opposite where we'd be thinking he wasn't progressing well to stick around in junior as an overager.
From Kleven's perspective, staying in university is more a personal choice. Does he want to be top dog on campus with college girls or live in Belleville?
If he stays in college, Is next year the risk that he can choose his team or is it he year after?
Would need to go back and play in the NCAA for the 2023-24 season as well.If he stays in college, Is next year the risk that he can choose his team or is it he year after?
Has it been confirmed if he spends another year in college?
Trouble maker...he gonna walk as a UFA
dunno why he wouldnt want to stayt with the sens. Im sure he wants to play with his boys Sanderson, JBD and PintoThe extra year at UND is the right development route IMO. Certainly adds anxiety about him staying in school and walking but the recent additions (with hopefully another D coming) will make the Sens a very attractive team to join just on the edge of competing.
If you want to see more of his play Youtube has 3 full games from this season. Was surprising to see how often he was on the right side. I knew he was capable but if he legit is capable of being able to play RD in a pinch that obviously makes him even more valuable to us.

This season, he’s played plenty of shifts as a right-side defenceman which has been a transition for the left-shooting defenceman. But his coach convinced him to make the switch so that he could be more attractive as a professional defenceman down the road.
“I told him, ‘If you can play right side, that’s six jobs you can go for in the NHL. If you’re playing left side and only the left side, those are only three jobs,’” explained Berry. “When you’re playing right side, you’ve got six jobs available because you’re more flexible. There’s a lot of guys who can’t do that.”

Smart coach. Probably sees him as a fringe/depth D guy and wants to maximize his versatility and opportunity.
Agree completely, IMO he could be Holden's replacement on the 3rd pairing LD when Holden's contract is done.I see plenty of potential in Kleven to be able to crack the lineup as a bottom pairing D man. I think he could become a valuable defensive shut down D man with high end physical play and with some upside. IMO he has improved every year .. he cracked the WJC squad 2 years in a row, As someone that was not too keen on the move up to take him at the draft .. I have really come around on him and I like his potential. He is one of my favorite prospects now. He will in all likelihood see some time the AHL but there is nothing wrong with that. I have no problem with him going back for another year at UND which we know is an excellent program but he could have come out and played in the AHL this year and the Sens pushed for him to come. Bring on the K-Train.
I see klevens stock climbing this year . So much so I don’t think the sens will be able to convince him to sign
