Player Discussion Ty Emberson

A spirited game from him, he'll be at his best when he's physically engaged like last night.

He may not of hit the ground running. but I think it's safe to say he's settling in on the 3rd pair.

He looks like a 2nd, slightly more physical Kulak out there, which isn't a bad thing. GIve me another 30 quality games, and I'd be willing to give him another look with Nurse come January.

I think his biggest fix is just cleaning up his puck play.

Positioning is more or less fine, he moves fairly well, isn't afraid to play physically, and his puck skills don't seem bad either. He can be a bit of a turnover machine, but it isn't out of a place of stupidity or poor intent. He's trying to make quick, crisp passing plays, but those are currently often resulting in turnovers. He probably needs to slow down and simplify a bit more before he is snapping outlet passes up the middle like he is trying (and failing) to do now.

Saw this graphic on insta. I really like Emberson's game. He's crisp, physical, aware and active (stick). He's a solid player that's going to evolve into a top pairing defenseman in his prime

He is not lolz, but he's a solid 3RD. Still has issues with decision making though.

Besides the hits, which have been great, haven't noticed him for weeks, which is a good thing, means he's just quietly doing his job and not getting in trouble with any bad outlets/giveaways. Arrows are up. Liking this trade. Saved us 2.3M over Ceci and were getting more hits out of it. Unless there's more offence coming, he probably tops out as a 3rd pair though.

Pretty much an ideal #6 defenceman.
A good #5. Cant call everybody that isnt a top 3 a #6 D.

Oilers have 5 decent Ds, Where's Ekholm is the #1D, and Boych the complimentary top 3 D, and Nurse is a one dimensional #3D, with Kulak rounding out. Nurse is the guy that would been nice to upgrade at, but you cant. Litterary.

Ekholm - Bouch
Good skating 2 way D with a head - Emberson
Kulak - Whoever is great for the day

Would be great

A #6 is the smallest problem

Emberson could be a good #5 in time. A lot has to go right for him to be a #4 dman though and thats projecting way down the road.
In any event its way too early to make these calls at this point in time.
He needs more seasoning...still too green.

Nothing wrong with being an ideal #6 defenceman, I mean it as a compliment.

Ekholm-Bouchard can be one of the best top pairs in the NHL.

Nurse should be capable of handing the #3 role when healthy.

Kulak is a fantastic #5 defenceman.

Wherever a guy is slotted, they should be able to elevate their play when injuries happen (like Kulak playing top 4 as needed) but when everyone is healthy he should be on the bottom pair. Thats why I don't Emberson is good enough to be called a #5. Can he do it? Sure but he's better suited to be a #6 and not carrying a defensive pair.

I do wonder if we could take a shot at an LD and run with something like this:

Nurse-Kulak
?-Bouchard
Ekholm-Emberson

It's basically three second pairings if ? can help settle things down for Bouch, and Ekholm's tutelage could bring out the next level in Emberson.

Pretty much an ideal #6 defenceman.

"Ideal" might be a bit of an overstatement, but he is certainly doing just fine on the third pairing. I don't think he is a difference maker where he is in the lineup or anything, but he is doing perfectly fine since being pushed back down to the bottom pairing.

Kinda funny thing is Podkolzin hits more than Holloway, Kapanen hits more than Foegele, Emberson hits more than Ceci.

When Kane is back and we have our full roster we should actually be a more physical team than last year.

hes played well enough lately that we can allow him to get a new number cause 49 is ass

Most bottom pairing D arent difference makers.

If the bottom pairing D is a difference maker its usually because they suck and lead to losses.

Here is one of my complaints about people who tweet stuff like that. There is no context. Emberson is averaging 14 minutes a game or 3rd line minutes and he is not usually on the ice vs the other teams top 6. For me that needs to be factored into how the numbers need to be looked at

isn't this what you want out of your 3rd pairing though???? I dont get what you getting at here.

Except... our road record is much better than our home record. Isn't that when the opposition would dictate match ups more, and target the bottom pairing more? Is there data that shows that Emberson has had an easier time out there?
