I think it isn’t tied to playing. They have access to the scholarship regardless of whether they play a sport or not. That should make it entirely non-athletic. They may have earned it playing hockey but it isn’t tied to playing anything.

(Edit: I meant to reply to earning an OHL education package) Unless good enough to negotiate up to four years upon signing, players have to play a game per semester to earn their education package.

In response to an earlier post; stipends among the three CHL leagues are not exactly equal, and OAs receive more $.

Sorry, that is not what I meant. What I meant was the CHL player doesn’t need to play a sport to access their scholarship. Example, a player can go to U of T, use their scholarship and not play hockey. But, obviously, in the NCAA it is an athletic scholarship that is tied to their participation in the sport and maintaining grades and their roster spot.

That is the advantage of the CHL Scholarship. Once it is earned, there is no requirement to have to maintain it other than use it for an approved program and within a specific time period.

So, because it is not an Athletic Scholarship that requires participation, they should be able to use their CHL scholarship in conjunction with their NCAA Athletic Scholarship. The existing rule in the NCAA now is they cannot combine athletic scholarships. I don’t’ think t he CHL Scholarship program qualifies as an athletic scholarship, hence it should not be exempt from being used to cover a portion of whatever percentage isn’t covered with their Athletic Scholarship.

So, if a player is offered a 75% Scholarship to play in the USA and the remaining balance is $10,000 per year and the CHL scholarship is worth $4000 per semester, the player should be able to access $8000 towards their remaining balance of $10,000.

And I meant to reply to a post about a terrible player will get four years of the OHL education package

LOL. Let’s hope the player isn’t terrible. But, I do agree that there are some players that spend four full years in the OHL and never accomplish much on the ice and they still get their four years. Some 1st rounders too with full rides….

I like the idea of the OHL returning to Cornwall, but it’s nowhere close to having the economic viability of Belleville.

Not sure how many of you have been to Cornwall lately, but it’s a very depressed little town with limited economic upside in the foreseeable future.

In comparison, Belleville benefits from the development boom currently happening in Picton which is about a 15min drive away. Everywhere you look there’s a new subdivision going up. One look at the stores in downtown Picton and you can see the demographic.
Actually the past couple of years has seen a large investment in technology infrastructure in Cornwall. They are becoming a hub for marine technology innovation as well as a new centre for call centres due to the bi-lingual availability of resources.

Yes. Cornwall can 100% support an OHL Team. They need a Reno for the rink. It is sort of ok enough if they really were highly motivated to put a team there but if they want to be sustainable then they need a reno. Blow out the Lake side of the arena and add private boxes and maybe raise the height of the stands on that side (raise the roof). Something needs to be done. But, I agree 100% that Cornwall can host a team.

The Metro area of Cornwall is 3x Owen Sound, the same as Belleville, and about 80% the population of Peterborough.
