Was at the game tonight - as per usual there were as many or more Habs fans there. Place was buzzing all night, right from the warm up. Had to know that Guhle and Dach would be pumped as it’s a homecoming for them and they had a ton of family there from all accounts.
Some observations:
Weird having an Oilers home game at 5:00 PM MST, especially on a Saturday night.
I’ve been there a few times but it never ceases to amaze me that a beautiful modern facility like Rogers place is right down town and in a not so great part of the city. Lots of sketchy folks around and people “living rough.” You’re worried when you park any distance away (since there’s almost no parking there).
After the opening shift breakaway, Habs dominated the first period. Dach walked in around a few guys and ran out of real estate. Skinner was playing well, had hoped they’d start Campbell! Guhle and Xhekaj looked very good.
Seeing Cole Caufield miss completely on a wide open net had me shaken up. Then Captain Nick scores off a bullet.
Second period was awful. Eddy takes the bad penalty, which didn’t look too bad in real time from where I was, but on the replay it looked worse. Oilers PP is lethal. Habs were okay until they went down 5-3… seeing Matheson take it down the ice 2 on 1 while killing a 5-3 powerplay is something I haven’t seen in a long long time. McDavid and Draisatl went to work and now the Habs are down 3 to 1. Funny thing was even when McDavid scored, most Habs fans were cheering him too, he was diving tonight, but is he ever fun to watch.
Highlight for me was when Xhekaj rifled home the wrister from the point on the powerplay. I jumped up and yelled louder than anyone. Well anyone around me anyway haha. I think a Xhekaj jersey will be my next investment. Was proud of the boys to come back on the road but giving up the goal with 7 seconds left was the dagger.
Overall a fun game to watch. Lots of goals, saw some wonderful passing and individual efforts. Saw some diving and lackadaisical efforts out there as well. Guhle and Xhekaj impressed me the most on the back end, Kovaevic was steady while Savard and Matheson struggled. I thought Slaf made some nice plays and looked much better on the third line with Anderson and Monahan than he did when he was on the fourth line early on. Monahan seemed a little off tonight, guessing his injury was catching up with him.
