Can he be better? Absolutely. Is he the reason they've lost the last two games? Not so much.

Sure he could have been a bit better in game 2 and maybe saved a goal or two in game 3, but with this defense there is no way to place the blame on him. They had defensive lapses ALL game and he consistently bailed them out, but you can't stop everything when they keep allowing breakaways and odd man rushes.

Add in some stupid penalties by the Bruins players to make it even harder on the guy.

Agreed.

I don't know how anyone can watch the defense then turn the blame to Rask.

And yet they do.

Honestly, anyone doing that is showing a complete lack of understanding for the sport, IMO, because it's such a woeful oversimplification.

It's absolutely maddening and makes me question why I constantly come into this thread....

I have my issues with Rask but on this you are absolutely right.

I think blaming Tuuka for last nights loss is incorrect, game 2 IMO starts with him no doubt.
My argument is even with how bad the defence is I just don't think he's worth the price tag. He has not given anything that the goalie at the other end isn't given and that extra 2 million in cap space helps.

We know our defence is banged up and I'm sure management and the coach are looking to Tuuka to be the X factor and he is just not.

Again last night not his fault at all but he is far from great.

I really don't think it's as bad as all that. There are a couple of posters with that mindset, but the vast majority place it at the feet of the officiating and the missing players on defense. I couldn't watch the 3rd period or the OT period so I can only go by what's being written here. But that's my take.

The team is def in a bad spot. Tuukka can do all of the acrobatics in the world trying to stop pucks, but he won't be able to stop them all. The Offense is putting goals on the board, but the Defense is a total mess which is probably the single biggest challenge facing the team. Without an NHL defense in front of him there will be only so much he can do, and so far the team can go in this series.

Agree.

And to clarify there's a difference between blaming Rask and thinking he's failed if he doesn't do it and saying this is how he's got to play if we are to move on.

Give Price or Holtby our current island of suckbag defensemen and they will have the same stats.

Holtby does have the same stats behind a fully healthy D.

Bobrovsky, Anderson, Elliot all below him in SV% with a fully healthy D.

John Gibson and Crawford just ahead of him.

The point I was trying to convey was that you could replace Rask with any of the top goalies of the past couple of years and they would have similar numbers against Ottawa in this series.

Oh I know, I agree with you. I just wanted to show what some of the top goalies looked like this year behind some of the top D corps. No goalie is going to play well behind this patchwork D.

I'm not, nor have I ever been confused here for a Rask fanboy, so take this for what it's worth:

The game two loss belongs singularly at the feet of Frank Vatrano. He took a ******** penalty that resulted in a goal, and he let his man run free on the game tying goal, because he was too busy facing the wrong way so he could watch Karlsson freewheel around the zone. That pass Karlsson made was right to FV's man, who converted easily because again, he was left all alone. Rask wasn't the issue that game. It was Vatrano's sub par effort, yet again. He's literally garbage out there right now. A net negative player. He does more to hurt the team than to help them. If I were Cassidy, he'd be up in the stands with Beleskey. Hell, I'd even give a chance to Hayes before Vatrano, and I think Hayes stinks.

I agree no doubt Vatrano had the best seat in the house for the Brassard goal in game 2 nor has Frankie done anything to merit being in the lineup (besides 1 goal) my only explanation for it is he can score with one shot, but how many are we giving up because of him. That's a new debate.

In game 2 at 3-1 no matter what at 7 million it's Rask job to shut the door and especially the second goal that have Ottawa all that life needs to be stopped. Plain and simple no excuses.

I think 90% of the blame for our goals against this series lies with our injuries on defense, but there's enough blame to spread where Rask takes some too. That Phaneuf goal that ended game 2 was crap. He has to have that. And the tying goal wasn't terrific either.

Like many other stars on this team, he needs to be better if they plan to win this. Backes needs to bring last night's performance every night (though I hardly look at him as a "star" just because he got paid like one). Bergeron and Marchand need to be a LOT better, notably Marchand. Be good for Krejci to show his face. But Rask also needs to be better.

Here we go again never criticize Mr Rask.

I criticize him all the time.
But right now complaining about him in the last couple of games make about as much sense as complaining about the lack of king crab legs on your cruise's the all-you-can eat buffet after the ship hit an iceberg and is taking on water.
Only Tim *$#%^*@! Thomas in his prime could save this defense.

Not sure that's true. Tim was the beneficiary of FAR better defenses than the one Tuukka is playing behind right now.
Really? I don't know. Kind of a draw.

From 2009 through 2012 These were your primary defensemen.

Not too good and not enough games to count:
Andrew Bodnarchuk
Jeff Penner
Andy Woz
Matt Bartkowski
Shane Hnidy

Mediocre:
Steven Kampfer 38 GP
Matt Hunwick 98 GP
Tomas Friggin' Kaberle 24 GP <== Definition of overrated.

Better:
Mark Stuart 87
Andrew Ference 121 GP
Derek Morris 58 GP
Dennis Wideman 75 GP
Johnny Boychuk 197 GP
Dennis Seidenberg 178 GP

Still with the team:
Adam McQuaid 154 GP
Zdeno Chara 240 GP

The rest:
Krug -- Good sub for Boychuk
Carlo -- Good sub for Seidenberg
Killer, Chiller, McAvoy

When your without your # 2,3,4 and 6th D , **** like what we've seen the last 2 games is going to happen. It was just a question of time before it caught up with them. This is not on Rask, especially last night.

Shame though, if we could have added McAvoy to a healthy D corp, it could have been a game changer.

The Chara and Seidenberg Thomas had were far better than the ones that Rask played behind. Not to mention Boychuk was a beast for us too.

The problem with comparing Thomas' career here with Rask's is that they are playing for teams going in opposite directions. When Thomas got here the Bruins were rebuilding and got better as time went on resulting in a team eventually won the Stanley Cup. You could even make the case that Boston under performed in the Thomas' tenure here and could have won 1-2 more Stanley Cups (2009 & 2012) as the Bruins were bounced much earlier than they should have been. Thomas was considered amazing for his 2011 run where his stats were:

GP W L GAA SV%
25 16 9 1.98 0.940

Rask has played for a team that started off among the elite in the league, but has been slowly getting worse and in need of some kind of rebuild. Just like with Thomas, the Bruins have had to deal with being bounced earlier than expected and could have possibly won a Cup (2014). With that being said, Rask has also had a playoff run that should be considered on par with Thomas' 2011 run. In 2013 Rask led the Bruins all the way to the Stanley Cup final with stats:

GP W L GAA SV%
22 14 8 1.88 0.940

Both goalies have played in front of some of the worse defences in the playoffs, and both performed relatively well given the circumstances, but were not considered elite goalies. Thomas started off with people saying he would never lead the team to Cup and you can't win with a journeyman goalie, then the team got better in front of him and he all of a sudden became an elite goalie.

Rask started off with a much better and obviously performed better at the start of his career than now, but as the team has gotten worse his stats have gone down and now people are saying the same thing they said about Thomas. Rask and Thomas were both known to let in soft goals and under perform at times and both have been able to complete steal games. The biggest difference between the two is that people look at everything as a what have you done for me lately and even though Rask has probably been better than Thomas career wise, Thomas will always be remembered for winning the Cup where if Rask doesn't win, he will always be remembered as an overpaid loser rightly or wrongly.
