Player Discussion Troy Terry

Top left next to Drysdale looks like Josh Mahura to me. Thought it was Gibson at first.

Lol that’s definitely not Gibson. No clue who it is though. I would guess one of Terry’s buddies outside of hockey or maybe from his younger playing days, but it would seem out of place since the rest are current teammates. But it’s definitely not someone currently on the Ducks.

The others are very easy to recognize.

I don't know about him being Captain but he will have a letter on his chest if he does come back.

I think he's the perfect 4-5 year holdover for a captain and probably puts a lot less pressure on a younger future captain like Terry (or potentially a darkhorse like McTavish!?)

I'm just reminded how Terry said the biggest change to his game was attacking the middle. It made a huge difference to his game to go from a perimeter flashy player to a drive to the net flashy player.
The biggest change in general I remember him saying in many interviews is to not worry about when he makes a bad play. He used to get frustrated and that got him away from his play and capabilities.

He said how Ryan Miller taught him to just not worry about it and play his game under any circumstances. He figured it out early last year.
I remember him pointing out that it was the biggest thing, but of course I understand there probably are more elements to it

The question now is how much better can he get? Terry is very much a late bloomer physically and I wouldn’t be shocked if his peak is in his late 20s/early 30s. He’s a hound on the puck and has started to give me serious Zetterberg vibes.

He's going to pot 50 soon
I think he could, if he focused on that and went solely for that goal but I don’t think that’s the type of player he is.

I think Terry will produce less goals as the team around him gets better. He had to score goals last season because who else was going to score? He’s going to carry the puck a lot and will make the play that has the highest probability to result in a goal.

I think he’s also going to start focusing even more on defense, this team is starved for forwards that can control the game in all three zones and he’s the guy closest to reaching that type of potential.

Reminds me so much of Zetterberg, who was always willing to be the best at whatever the team needed most.

This team needs a better coach.. a coach that can teach them a good team defense.. Eakins is not that.

Surprisingly, when Eakins had the horses to run a "good team defense", he got great production. The problem was he was losing his defensive specialists due to injury, COVID, or both.

I broke down Even Strength productions.
Gm 1 -33: Mostly healthy roster
Gm 34-62: Injuries hit Lindholm (2 games), Fowler (4 games), Manson (16 games), Silf no longer the same
Gm 63-82: No Lindholm, Manson, or Des. All three were PK specialists.

When mostly healthy, the team's ES defense was amazing! We actually had a positive ES goal differential! Terry was a significant part of it with the scoring, but we had an amazing team defense, PP, and PK unit!

Once injuries and COVID started to hit the Ducks' roster, so too did it falter offensively and defensively at ES. But on special teams, it was able to thrive, which kept us afloat.

After the TDL, I was surprised to see our ES defense didn't implode. What did implode was our PK play as we went from average at the TDL to dead last at season's end. Eakins isn't in charge of the special teams, but our PK unit got its heart of its roster ripped out without Lindholm, Manson, and Des gone.

Do we have the horses this year? I think with our new forwards, we might be a little better at two-way play with Strome, Vatrano, and rookie McTavish. Defensively, Kulikov is the only known defensive quality added. That's the scary part. We don't have the proper construction to run it back like last year to start the season. We also don't have NHL talent depth to withstand any injuries either.

In conclusion, with a lot of talent available, Eakins proves he's a good coach. Without a lot of talent, it becomes difficult to make lemonade out of lemons.

That is a wild take
How so?

He's on a very short leash. One 5 to 7 game losing streak. He's gone
