Player Discussion Troy Terry

He was playing like a difference maker on the ice last season, he just wasn’t getting the results. The amount of plays he made that should have resulted in goals but didn’t was absurd. He was also a puck hound last year and was great at causing turnovers and protecting the puck.

This year he’s somehow greatly improved on everything I mentioned and he’s being more assertive/trusting his shot more.

He’s a difference maker all over the ice right now. Maybe being unlucky last year was a blessing in disguise, instead of being content he went out and focused on getting even better.

I don’t think he’ll keep scoring goals like he has and this might end up being his best goalscoring season but he’s even making me think there’s more goalscoring potential than I originally thought.

Imagine if the Ducks had dumped him last year like they were trying to do...
And if Buffalo didn't want him in an Eichel trade will look pretty bad for Buffalo, especially if Krebs never becomes as valuable as Terry has become. To go along with they could have gotten 2021 1st + Lundestrom + Terry + prior to the 2021 draft.

TBH, we don't really know.

The main hypothesis from the hockey pundits is that he used to be very much in his own head and have huge confidence swings which was reflected in the way he played - now that he's fully settled (maybe because of playing with Getzy), he's found some real consistency.

I don't think anything has really changed in terms of like...physical attributes. Just a change in mindset.

Eakins has said as much speaking generally about the team recently. He said something to the effect of "You look at the physical capabilities of those guys in that room, their wingspan, physical testing, etc. It's all nearly identical. The difference of being able to pull off what others can't on the ice is completely between the ears." I'm paraphrasing, but that was the general gist.

Whether or not that's 100% accurate should probably be up for debate, but I still think it was an interesting point nonetheless.

i keep hearing this but I have no memory of them actively trying to move him or that he requested a trade; which is something else I've heard.

At one point last season Friedman mentioned on a broadcast to be on the lookout in Anaheim because Terry might be on the move. IIRC he insinuated Terry asked to be moved, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

The talent was always there - it was the actual execution that was lacking until this year.

Now he plays like Rakell 100% of the time, unlike Rakell who plays like Rakell 60% of the time.
Freaky Friday Ducks style.
He used to get bumped off the puck easier.

Friedman mentioned it and then Stephens said a day or two later that there was no validity to it. The organization loves Terry, theres no way they would look to trade him 3 months into a new 3 year contract.

I didn't need any charts just eye test. He was scratching the surface and his talent could be seen the past 2 years he just needed to put it together and gain some weight.

The main reason I found the chart so interesting isn’t the later years but rather the the first few, I can’t think of many other NTDP kids who were depth players of the U-17/18 teams who became stars, shows how much work he has put in, and how much latent talent that he has capitalized on

Even when his goal rate goes down he's still probably at least a 60 point guy next season. 15 to 20 goals / 40 to 50 assists next year.

I don’t think a 55-65 pt player is a star but if Troy can become that it’s a huge win in my book
Especially in the new high scoring era the NHL is in atm, I see him being that with 55 being the low end and 65 the high end in the next season for him.
That is after his shooting% drops.

To be a star under Baders model a forward must sustain a .7 ppg pace for their prime so that’s roughly what qualifies as a star for him, but yeah that is definitely a loosely used term

Interesting. I definitely think he's got consistent 57 point potential but we'll see I guess. It looks like he'll get there this season.

We've all watched him grow so much from catching our eye at the rookie camp (I literally didn't know much of him and wasn't even going to keep my eye on him) and he ended up showing out and catching everyone eye.

I've been told by a coach a coach that he is great in the locker room and very well respected. The opposite of Steel.

I should apologize to him, between me and myself I thought he was a mediocre player with whom fans were expecting way too much. Well I was wrong, kid has it.
