Jets fans who don't believe this are in denial.

Is the contents of this tweet really all that surprising?

Doesn't mean he isn't getting signed. But this had all the makings of a tough negotiation going all the way back to last season.

Denial? Nope, we all said chill it will be a long negotiation. We didn't expect anything else, but we do expect him to be signed in the end.

If Winnipeg can't sign him to terms that they are comfortable with the Oilers should be on the horn to Chevy.

Trouba to the Leafs? Leafs have a spot for him on the right side on the top pairing with Morgan Rielly. They also have the assets to acquire him and the money to sign him.

Only things the Jets would be interested in as return from either Oilers or Leafs are 1-2 players from each team and both teams would shudder at the cost.

Anyone who believes they can get Trouba for picks or anything short of Elite LHD prospect or very good young roster player are dreaming.

"I don't want to play with Mark "The Boat Anchor" Stuart as my partner anymore". I'm sure that's in there somewhere for their negotiations.

You do have assets that Jets need? Does that asset name start with Morgan by any chance?

Why would the leafs give up the cheaper, arguably better player, for a guy who's demands are obviously out of touch? I understand the fwd assets the leafs would dangle wouldn't be a need of the jets, but to ask for Morgan would just be, well.. stupid. Unless there was a plus added.

Not really.

He's likely asking for the moon and doesn't exactly fit our needs or salary structure.

Acquiring him would probably hurt the team more than help it this year.

RHD, big, good skating, offensive capable with a big shot and physical. Unless his contract demands are terrible I don't see an issue. Even if it cost $6 million for the sake of discussion that'd be less than $20 million tied up in our top 4 defensemen thanks to Klefbom's and Larsson's contracts. Mark Fayne's bloated contract comes off the books in 2 seasons so his salary likely gets used on Nurse, Reinhart or Davidson.

Denial? Nope, we all said chill it will be a long negotiation. We didn't expect anything else, but we do expect him to be signed in the end.

Feel free to name your price. I never said that he'd come for free.

I'm sure he knows the deal would never happen but I'm thinking he means that Rielly is pretty much the main thing they would only want for Trouba from the Leafs. Jets need a stud LH dman

His point was that the only asset that the Jets would be interested in on the Leafs is Morgan Reilly. Obviously you guys will be very hesitant

What we know:

The negotiations are being termed this way by some random guy on twitter (with zero attachment to the situation) who is paraphrasing the words of a reporter that likely only has access to the player rep. Cheveldayoff takes a hard "no comment" position with reporters regarding Jets contractual negotiations, period. Lawless likely has zero idea of their feelings regarding the matter as such.

The player has very little in the way of any leverage; his only ally, time, is running short with the World Cup camp roughly one month away, and given that the player likely needs to sign prior to that date in order to insure future earnings in case of injury. His agent must term the negotiations in this manner in other words in order to attempt to extract any remaining additional value out of the team offer that he can.

We really have no idea of how far apart the parties truly are, given that only the Jets know what their final desires are regarding the contract and they aren't telling anyone what that is - including the other side of the negotiation. In any negotiations, you take a "hard line" and then soften that over time.

A public proclamation of "far apart" is usually the final words heard prior to two groups eventually striking a deal in private.

As stated, Trouba's only leverage is to negotiate the best deal possible by taking a difficult public stance. Check back in a month if nothing is done by then; otherwise, this situation looks like pretty standard stuff and is not likely representative of anything other than two parties in the process of negotiating a deal.

Actually 0 chance of it happening. Leafs would be trading away the better player. I realize that may seem incendiary but it's just the truth.

I'm also not sold on troubas ability to qb a pp unit. Seems management there in wpg see's something they're not so sold on.

Big time shot and good physical presence. Needs to work on shot suppression but most young D have to.
Would love to add him to the leafs, great fit for the club but I'd hang up if I was asked for rielly.

Seems like there's no fit between TO and wpg there wish people would let it go.

I 100% agree with you. TO will need to look elsewhere for their top 4 RD.

Ideally we sign Trouba long term, but if you want to play:

Klef+

Or

Karrson+

Or

LD

McDavid wouldn't be on the table, but anything less then one of the above makes zero sense to the Jets and we could find better else where. Don't even bother offering picks or Eberle or Davidson or Nurse or Reinhart.

They were talking about Trouba today on That's Hockey. Basically no way he gets dealt according to them but somebody did ask a good question which was would he play in the World Cup without a deal and risk injury.
It would be a bit of a gamble on his part.

You could find better than Klefbom + or Larsson + or Draisaitl? Yeah good luck with that. Let's hope for your sake that they can reach a contract agreement because if that's the return that you'd be expecting you'd be disappointed.

If that's the case then the discussions must be going pretty good. As for playing in the WC, that'd be a bad idea if he doesn't have a contract. Look at what happened with Staal.

Have to think the last component there, "they're apart on usage" is a big element in this. With Byfuglien and Myers already there on the RH side and making money, taking up PP time, etc., it's not hard to see how Trouba and his agent might be looking at the situation in Winnipeg and come away a bit skeptical of the opportunity for him to really take on the role he wants and is entirely capable of.

He's gonna have a hard time earning the huge payday he's capable of earning, if he's stuck sharing those RH defenceman opportunities with Byfuglien and Myers for the next bunch of years. At best, he ends up playing on his off side at even strength, which is very unusual and likely not very desirable at all for a RH shooter...and he's still splitting PP time.

Other teams, he's probably playing top RH defence minutes, top-PP time...and earning a future contract accordingly. I'm sure Trouba and his agent can see that.

Read my post again, I said if it wasn't one of those deals we could find better. Read it again

Winner. Somebody finally looks at it from the player's side and not the fan side. It's a long term business for the player.

The usage issue claimed here is representative of nothing other than the wishful hopes of some.

Trouba's TOI/EV is already second highest on the Jets. His TOI/60 ranks third.

Maurice just last month said their plan for 16/17 is to play him on the #1 pair with Byfulglien. Trouba has said he has no issues with playing on the left side, and the Jets said they plan to use him in the #1 pair.

Where exactly is the usage concern then? Answer: There isn't one.

If somebody had to be moved it should be Myers.

Maurice also said that they would move a RHD to the left side at the start of last year. That didn't happen until they were down 1 or 2 goals in the 3rd. What would cause Trouba to believe him this year?

Little pp time behind Buff and Myers. Don't see that changing.

Nobody else but Trouba can or will play with Stuart and he is signed for two more years.

Usage is a real issue.

The discussion started with a bold statement that Leafs have assets to compensate for Trouba. Knowing how much TO fans know about other teams I was just checking. They believe everyone is desperate for JVR. Well ... no ...

I am not trying to open another Trouba - Rielly discussion just saying that Trouba will either sign with Jets or dealt for a top 2 LHD from another team. Leafs DO NOT have assets interesting to Jets to acquire Trouba.
