We are in the mindless chatter timeframe of the off-season. The draft has come and gone, significant free agency is over, and no trades in sight.

It’s that time of year when we are stuck at a red light and no one else is on the road and it seems like it will never turn green.

John
I know, and it is a message board which is basically 90% mindless chatter. I just found it funny it was mostly in the Trevor Zegras thread when Zegras is known for non-stop mindless chatter.

Well than tell me when is it Crazy? When the season starts and he has no contract>?

That wouldnt be crazy either. We make the mistake of always thinking things are only on the Org and tend to forget the player has a large say in the matter too.

Only thing to me that would be crazy is giving him something he hasnt earned just for the sake of locking him up.

All the other situations are unfortunate but not crazy.

I’m in this camp. This isn’t a Ryan, Lindholm, Rakell situation.

Coming off the worst season in team history and a new “NHL” coach, not having your 1C at camp is not a good look or a recipe for a good start of the season.

John

What do you mean not having your 1C at camp? McTavish will be there since he's on his second year of his ELC. :naughty:

Here's a conspiracy theory:

Pat is into analytics. He might have hired a personal lip reader. When the both sides sat down around the table, his assistant was furious and asked Pat for a short chat. Pat leaned into his assistant lip reader and angrily whispered "he said WHAT about my wife???". Both sides are on bad terms now and Pat is considering a trade with Toronto for future considerations.

You heard it here first.

He will be at camp. There’s over a week to get a deal done and it’s not like he has to fly in from Sweden. He’s working out in Orange County. They could get a deal done at 11 PM on the 19th and he’d be on the ice the next morning

Zegras’ agent says the goal is to sign before camp.

He also had this to say about Sanderson’s contract, which strongly suggests Zegras’ deal will be a bridge.

Assuming it goes to bridge, Pat may be trying to navigate some tricky time line stuff, considering Drysdale will probably sign a 2-4 year bridge as well. Maybe it’s galaxy braining it a bit but it could even affect Leo’s deployment indirectly this year. In the event that both Z and Drysdale extend 3 years, burning Leo’s ELC this year would mean they all are due for another deal the same offseason. Fresh off of McTavish and Dostal raises. It’s kind of understandable why this could take so long because theres a lot of ways this could have a pretty significant butterfly effect.

I can understand why the org wants to play it safe. If we end up overpaying Zegras its going to screw us in future negotiations with Carlsson, McTavish, Zellweger, Mintykov etc. Taking the time to set the tone now will help in the future

I'm assuming Z wants the bridge and the team wants 8. 8x8 or 8.5 is a really easy deal right now if Zegras was agreeable - pretty much the going rate for young Cs his age with 1st line potential. But I imagine Z is the one pushing for shorter term and I can't really blame him. He put up 60 points back to back on awful teams with virtually no offensive support. It's pretty reasonable to guess he can exceed that with a real team around him. Plus with the cap most likely going up significantly next year 9-10 will be the new 8. He probably wants to bet on himself and the cap for a couple years and then cash in.

If it's team pushing for a bridge that's very dumb unless Zegras is asking for something crazy.

Since no one knows the numbers it is tough to have any idea what is going on.

I’m thinking that it is less about doing a bridge, but more about the value of the bridge. Do you bridge at say… $7m? $7.5m?

Too high a bridge just backs the team into a corner. If PV is at $5m-$6m max and Zegras wants $7m, then the “fair” value for each side might be worlds apart.

This all boils down to the team wanting Z to work on his defensive game.. Cronin already asked Z to shore up his D lapses. Ducks are essentially saying to z and his agent.. Prove your worth.. I think he gets a bridge deal 2-4 years at 6.5

This will be just like any other deal. Player wants crazy $$ to sign long term, club wants crazy low to sign bridge, they take forever to come to a compromise. Really, for me at least, its a nothing burger.

It reads incredibly neutral to me, which is exactly the tone I would take if I was about to finish a deal and didn't want to rock the boat at all.... (me wishing this into existence)
4 hopefullys, one unfortunately, reminds the reader of the timeline, reminds the parties of the stakes, reaffirms that Z will hold out if he doesn't get the deal he wants, invokes "good faith" without anyone asking.

Maybe it's just the writing of a habitually careful person but I (a pessimist) see some red flags there.
