Clearly, Dubas wanted Murray more than Ottawa wanted to get rid of him. And do we know for sure, there were not other teams trying to get him?

As for the Robidas Island nonsense, if Murray is not injured enough to be on LTIR and wants to play, why would he agree. He might prefer the $5.3M buyout and the chance to sign somewhere for less money. Is that $2M cap hit in 2024-25 really worth cheating to avoid?

Looks like he went to Robidas Island after all.

3rd day after final arbitration settlement for 48 hours, yes. Window opens mid-afternoon Wednesday through Friday.

There is no “word on this”. It’s a pipe dream on the internet. Nothing suggests he is injured other than our own fantasies. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love it to be true, but I have not personally heard anything to suggest it to be true beyond “he is often hurt, just LTIR him”, which is not actually a reason. But here’s hoping.

They have to buy him out I think. HAVE TO. I don’t think you can take the Leafs cap problems to the trade table and wind up with any result other than getting taken to the cleaners.

“Hey, other random GM, you want this guy with lots of real money due at his lowest trade value ever? We’ll give you a 1st?”

“Ya no, need more. What no? Sure, call back if you change your mind. Good luck with it.”

They can’t place thier cap fate in the hands of other gm’s. Can’t. I hate, hate, buyouts, always have, but I don’t see a way around this one.
What’s funny about it @Isaac Nootin? I’m happy to be wrong but is it really a laughable take? No one read this today for the first time and honestly thought as expected. Happy surprise.

I mean the fact That they put him on LTIR might suggest he's injured since LTIR stands for, let me check here........long term injured reserve.

I think that means he's not just injured but injured long term

Gents please help me out here .. this ltir move puts them roughly $2M over CAP limit per Capfriendly .. assuming one of Gambrell and/or Holmberg go to Marlies and Robertson either goes to LTIR or goes to Marlies .. does that take CAP hit to roughly $400,000 over limit???????????? a little confused???? thanks

Yes, at the moment, the Leafs are still over the cap. They have to make at least one more move over the next couple of months to be cap compliment.

As per CBA

Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) - High Level Overview

  • To qualify for LTIR, a player must be expected to miss at least 10 NHL Games AND 24 days of the NHL season.
  • When a player is on LTIR, a team may exceed the salary cap. Despite the common misconception, LTIR does not remove a Cap Hit from a team’s overall Cap Hit, it just potentially allows the team to exceed the salary cap.
  • The amount that a team may exceed the salary cap due to LTIR is commonly referred to as the “LTIR Pool”.
  • If a team is cap compliant on opening day without using LTIR, or uses LTIR at any point during the season, the LTIR Pool is the Cap Hit of the LTIR player less the team’s cap space when the player goes on LTIR. For example, if a player with a $4M Cap Hit goes on LTIR when the team has $100K of Cap Space, the LTIR pool is $3.9M ($4M-$0.1M). Because of this, team’s often make several roster moves right before a player goes on LTIR in order to be as close to the cap as possible, in order to maximize the LTIR Pool.
  • If a team cannot be cap compliant on opening day without using LTIR, the LTIR Pool is the amount the team exceeds the Cap. For example, if a team is $3M over the Cap and places a player on LTIR with a $4M Cap Hit for the opening roster submission, the LTIR Pool is the $3M that the team exceeded the cap.
  • While on LTIR, Cap Space is no longer accrued, meaning any portion of the LTIR pool not used cannot be used later.
  • When a player comes off LTIR, the team’s annual cap hit for that day must be under the Cap.

CapFriendly shows the Leafs $2,068,950 over with 13 forwards, plus Robertson on Injured Reserve, and 7 defensemen and 2 goalies.

Robertson and Holmberg do not require waivers. Thus they could be sent to the Marlies, which would still leave the Leafs about $500K over with a 12/7/2 roster.

In theory, the Leafs could demote another player and go with the bare minimum 20 player roster, but whomever they demote will require waivers and, other than Gambrell, would likely be lost. Personally, I would not go with only 20 players and would look for another solution.

IMO Treliving is still going to do something on defense and I can see him trading Brodie for a pick or prospect and replacing him with someone bigger, younger and cheaper. Not easy to do, but there will be some options. For example, someone like Zadorov has a $3.75 million cap hit and is 28 years old. IMO Zadorov is not as good as Brodie, but he brings the size the Leafs need and he is less costly.

#1 why in the bluest of blue Hells would they keep Murray over Samsonov?

#2 they aren't going to sign Reaves to a 3 year deal just to waive him before he plays a game

And did Knies retire or not good enough?

Murray
Woll

is currently a cap compliant roster. so without making another move other then waiving Timmins or trading him for futures and waiving Reaves is all that currently needs to be done to be cap compliant this roster has 15k of cap space with Muzzin on LTIR, and I'm sure later in the summer we could sign a vet fourth liner for the same money as Clifford so he doesn't need to be on the opening day roster. then once the someone gets hurt we can then bring up others and run our real roster with Knies/Reaves etc.

perhaps you two should look at context before typing, I quoted someone saying we couldn't be cap compliant with Murray in the lineup which I proved otherwise in said post. also when the option was Buyout Murray, or Trade Murray with assets going the other way I would then have chosen to keep Murray, and would have also been able to get some type of value for Sammy in trade.

I don't personally get the confidence behind Sammy on this board prior to joining the leaf's Sammy had 2 season's which was worst then Murray's season in Toronto. 1 decent regular season followed by a not great playoff is not something I'm confident in. I fully expect Woll to be our starter come playoff time next season so Murray or Sammy isn't much difference. but I wouldn't have taken the cap penalty or given away assets to keep Sammy over Murray

also @The Iceman I provided how Knies would be handled right in the post you quoted so not sure where your Knies comment comes from...
