No, they won't, there is Marner (3M) raise coming and you need some money for your 2 C- even assuming we'll have JT @ 5M we have 3M left for Schenn.

What kind of disconnect from reality is this? Marner isn't getting a $3 mil raise, that's for certain. Schenn? You do realize he's already signed a three year contract elsewhere?

Oh boy, you must be fun at parties. Yes, Schenn is gone, it was an example of the player/tier we'll get.

Agree $3mill is a bit too much, but I was replying to a poster who said $4mill raise for Matthews and Nylander. which is a bit on the lower end.

Hence why we'll have 3 maybe 3.5 available for the Schenn type of acquisition.

Just think what Samsonov must be thinking .. The Leafs brought in Matt Murray and were willing to pay him $7 mil last year and his contract is $8 mil in real $$ this year and he is often injured and Sammy's backup and now being considered a buyout candidate he is that unreliable and unplayable.

'With Matt Murray often injured this season, Samsonov seized the opportunity to be a number one goalie and could be in line for a big raise over his $1.8M salary this season. The Leafs will have to decide whether the investment in Samsonov is worth it, but will have to make at least one decision thanks to the play of Joseph Woll this season. Woll is on a team-friendly deal for another 2 seasons that will pay him just under $900K per season and given that he will not have a waiver exemption beginning next season, he will likely be the backup for the Leafs. That means that the Leafs will go with either Murray or Samsonov as their starter, with many believing that it will be Samsonov. Moving Murray will not be easy, but it will free up the necessary cap space to sign Samsonov to a reasonable contract extension".

Probably thinking "I have no track record, 3 million sounds great"

I'd wait for the Ducks to move Gibson. Anaheim would be under the cap floor even more than they currently are and would need a goalie to have on the roster. Sweetener would likely be a pick or Robertson or whatever but I'd be ok with that. Can't have $2 million worth of dead money on the cap in 2024-25.

Why not? It's not going to stop them doing anything

To be honest, you could've made those assumptions clear in your reply and not expected us to read your mind.

How the heck did the previous GM not manage to get an extra 25% retention or a first round pick for Murray? He should have realized he was negotiating with another GM trying to clear room, not a player agent for one of his friends.

Anyway, they should have a meeting of the minds with Murray. You want your full $8 million, you're taking a little detour to Robidas Island. If you want to resuscitate your career and won't play ball with LTIR, you're getting the boot.
Clearly, Dubas wanted Murray more than Ottawa wanted to get rid of him. And do we know for sure, there were not other teams trying to get him?

As for the Robidas Island nonsense, if Murray is not injured enough to be on LTIR and wants to play, why would he agree. He might prefer the $5.3M buyout and the chance to sign somewhere for less money. Is that $2M cap hit in 2024-25 really worth cheating to avoid?

Why the hell would Samsonov be thinking any of that stuff?

Isn’t the big problem Dubas’ demand for the player outweighed Ottawa’s desire to get rid of him?

The league is projecting the cap will increase by $4.5 million next year. Treliving may be approaching it that he is going to allot $2 million of that to a Murray buyout and have $2.5 million leftover to use elsewhere (which will be consumed by the increases to Matthews and Nylander).

Ideally though you try and get creative and find a taker. So long as a high pick isn't attached to it.

The price to move 6M cash is a 1st round pick (as seen with Marleau and others) but that's only IF you find a team with cap space and an owner that is willing to do it.

So in the end even if you're willing to give up a first round pick that's not easy.

Goalie market is slow AF right now.

Nothing in Hellebyuck, Hart, Demko, or Gibson.

Can’t see many takers looking for Murray at a reasonable asset cost.

Buyout might be the smarter option which could hopefully help be mitigated by a cap increase

When does the buyout window close?

I think the option of playing Murray and letting nature take its' course should be be considered. Insist on long hard practices too - really get him in fighting form
