He has hinted that he gets a second buy out window if someone files for arbitration.

A buy out free's up about 4.5 million in salary. I think this was his plan all along. Give some money to Sammy and get rid of Murray.

If Dubas could pay 8 draft spot drops to get rid of Mrazek surely Treliving can find something.
We traded down from a late 1st (25th) to early 2nd (38th) for mrazek

Issue with Murray is there is a lot of cash he needs to be paid this final year.

Think leafs portion is 6M so whomever would trade for him is on the hook for 6M.

Murray can't be bought out by any team except for the leafs so teams will want a 1st to take him for the year for 6M in cash

Josh Bailey cost a 2nd and he had 3.5M cash left with him being bought out so the wings only paid 1/3 of that for a 2nd.

Mrazek we didnt have the same tight restriction and the hawks were fine moving up as they wanted Rinzel.

Its going to tougher to deal Murray now. He had a horrific year, injured and when he played he was a grade above mrazek only, with majority of his games being poor ones.

Buy out probably is the best option at 2M dead cap next year could be dealt with depending on if we deal Marner next summer if this season is a flop

Chicago paid a second round pick (38) and agreed to take Mzarak for a first round pick (25) so the Leafs dropped 13 spots.

I think the only way Murray isn't bought out is if Nylander is traded because that move would likely clear up the cap space needed this season.

With the 2M penalty next year I suspect they're ready to take a step back on defence and let Brodie walk. That and the cap bump will be 9M to pay for the buyout (2M), Matthews and Nylander extensions (4M), and potential raises for Bertuzzi, Domi, etc. (3M). Then run with a minimum contract for the #6.

The next season Tavares will expire and they'll have a chunk of cap space to shore up the defence.

No, they won't, there is Marner (3M) raise coming and you need some money for your 2 C- even assuming we'll have JT @ 5M we have 3M left for Schenn.

I see no reason to buyout Murray it's a 2 million cap hit for next season for no reason. imo it's a toss up between our current three guys who will play the best next year, so no reason to hinger our cap next year without a tangible upgrade. we can currently not make another move and be cap compliant to start the season tomorrow with our current contracts so no need to buyout murray.

Never been a fan of having cap space allotted to the buying out of a contract/anything that can't help the team in any meaningful way, not to mention having said contract on the books for longer than it should otherwise be. That stated, I'd have even less interest in attaching an asset of value (Robertson or a 1st round pick) to Murray for a transaction that isn't intended to be a hockey trade.

The plan is to push the the pain down the road making it impossible to build a playoff contender.

edit: 13 draft spots.

How the heck did the previous GM not manage to get an extra 25% retention or a first round pick for Murray? He should have realized he was negotiating with another GM trying to clear room, not a player agent for one of his friends.

Anyway, they should have a meeting of the minds with Murray. You want your full $8 million, you're taking a little detour to Robidas Island. If you want to resuscitate your career and won't play ball with LTIR, you're getting the boot.
