Good contract for both parties.... Sanheim likely would have gotten between 6-7 on the open market for 7 years so its a win win....Hopefully he continues his improved play over the past 2 seasons then this will be a steal.....

Well extending Sanheim and trading Provorov with 2+ years left *should* get a better return and better results than trading UFA Sanheim and keeping Provorov.

I don’t disagree those could be a good set of moves in a general sense. But unfortunately when accounting for the Flyers current lack of talent within the organization on top of their overall contract situation. I just have serious doubts the Flyers correct this any time soon to make Sanheim’s deal really worth it.

I don’t dislike Sanheim or even this deal in a general sense. I dislike the Flyers put themselves in a situation with so many lead up deals that were/are poorly to that point that trading Sanheim might have made more sense.

In the real world, it's a fair deal, but I can't help but think that it's a massive overpayment considering the way the team has used and treated Sanheim his entire career here.

They probably think he's the 4th most important defenseman on the team this year and they give him this contract?

It's a good deal and right on target where you save money on the player long term. We'll see where this takes us after this season. He was definitely our most valuable asset for the trade deadline and that's now off the table.

Good deal for both the player and the team.

Also shows how much out to lunch the majority of the fan base is with how players feel about playing in Philly.
The Weegar contract undoubtedly was a huge help in expediting Sanheim’s extension.

Smart of the Flyers to pounce now while that’s the market. And Sanheim doesn’t have to worry about an injury ruining his payday.

It’s a good deal for both sides. One less thing the Flyers have to worry about. Their defense could be pretty solid this season & moving forward.

Good for Sanheim.

At first glance, it makes the team look bloated on defense with decent money to good but not great players.

But DeAngelo is only on a 2 year deal and Provy has 3 years left, so the next GM has options.

And Ellis will never play again.

TDA 2 assists, +3, xGF 42.25%
Sanheim 0 points, xGF 21.17%
So we know who's overpaid. :sarcasm:

Using xGF is a one game sample is so funny hahaha, but what's actually funny is that you use it over actual goals in giant samples even when we know the two don't necessarily reconcile.

For instance, in Hayes' career as a Flyer before last night, his ES xGF% is 51.19 and his actual GF% is only 47.4. That covers 124 games and 1714:36 minutes.

It'll start at 27, go to 34, the last couple seasons he should still be a solid D-man, and by that time $6.25M won't be an overpay for a 2nd pair D-man even if he slips a little.

Does tell you he thinks Torts isn't the monster HC that some make him out to be.

Given that top D-men are getting $9-10M, if Ellis ends up on LTIR, Provorov, TDA, Sanheim, Risto is not the worst top 4 you could have, all between 26-28, and you can either let TDA walk, or trade Risto in a couple years as Attard compete for a top 4 slot.

As far as trading Provorov, they'd probably wait until the summer after they see how York and Zamula progress.
Yes it is... Risto alone tanks it immensely.

This is honestly feels like San Jose years ago when they basically signed everybody of note they had to long term deals. But at least San Jose had a finals appearance to hang it’s hat. Even when you’re a contending team you’re taking on a big risk with that type of contract outlook. But at least you can somewhat justify it short term when your team is legitimately good.

The Flyers are essentially taking on all the risk long term with little to no short term benefit.
And creating roadblocks for the new GM that's going to have to rebuild
