Technically yes....but there's also the psychological effect that bottom dweller teams have in the last month or two of the season. All they have left to play for is pride, and to be the spoiler. That's a lot of motivation and causes a number of upsets.

It's basically a month of booby traps.
I'd like to see the stats that back up the theory that bad teams are better late in the season... That's a mirage. I'm not too focused on those booby traps.

The team played relatively well again.

The 1st goal sucked, and never should have gone in. Timmy tied it up and the refs robbed us.

Then the double PK sunk us.

Refs made some bad calls, but we’ll probably have to score (more) goals to win games.

The thinking on the Stutzle goal that was disallowed was that he knocked the stick out of the hands of the Canes defender (Slavin?). You could see the stick on the ice after and Slavin's protesting gesture, but the camera didn’t reveal or catch what Stutzle did from what I could see.

I don’t agree that they played well.

Forsberg let in a non shot to start the game.

Yes, Stutzle tied the game, and yes the referees intervened and adjusted what ought to have been a tie game into a 3 goal deficit with a few successive calls.

However the 3rd goal could have still been prevented.

And Ottawa had no push back following that sequence.

Hamonic was very slow, as was Perron who replaced a speed demon in Gregor.

I’d like Gregor back in and JBD in as well. Take out MacEwan and run with the speediest version of this team. Time for a change with a 2 game losing streak ongoing.

So Stuetzle is basically coming right down main Street on his off side. Be brings his stick back to one-time a shot and in doing so hits Svechnikov's stick. You can argue he knocked the stick out and technically that's true, but that is a very very thin call in the context of the play. Context of the play is 2 on 1, setting up for one timer, without eyes in the back of his head wouldn't have even known the stick was there.

As for more goals, if the Stuetzle goal counts AND there isn't a Pinto call - which was equally as bad - then we have a 1-1 game entering the 3rd

I get that's asking for two calls to "go your way" but I think that's the way they legitimately should have gone

Next 13 games will define if they have a chance at the playoffs. 9 of them are at home. Then they hit the dreaded 9 game western road trip.

If they're not 4+ games over .500 by the road trip, then the playoff hope dwindles.

This is a general comment (versus last night), but penalties have a different standard these days it seems. Years ago, iirc a player didn’t get a penalty for knocking a stick out of a player’s hands. But they do today.

I just think that over the long haul (season, half season, whatever), the calls will balance out in the end. Teams need to do enough on their own to win games. I thought the Canes played well and controlled big chunks of the game which enabled them to win.

Stutzle did have a good game though. That was an impressive outing for him. It's too bad either he or other Senators didn’t get more goals which is a big, necessary part in winning games. JMHO.

A conspiracy theorist would argue that there is bias in the league's calling of games.

Generally yes I agree these things balance out over time

But I think there's no doubt that there were two spectacularly bad calls last night that had a direct impact on the outcome of the game.

One called a good goal off

The other created a PP that led to a too many men. The too many men was a legit call but likely doesn't happen without the initial call. The initial call resulted in 2 goals.

So we've got a 3 goal swing stemming from bad calls

We definitely need more goals. You don't win often with one. But 1-1 at the start of the 3rd? I'd take that on the road. And that's probably what the score is 95 times out of 100 if you replay it. From there, it's not just an issue of you need one, they also need one.

Anyway, point taken. This stuff does generally balance out.

I'm not even 100% sure the TMM call was legit, @Blotto71 posted in the GDT a screen capture showing two guys coming on and one going off at the far blue line side of the bench, but another guy was going off at center ice. It's possible that the extra man was off camera though so maybe, but when the broadcast said it was TMM the just focused on the blueline exchange so idk.

Seems to be legit . I was mistaken, I just watched a replay of that sequence a few times. Norris fell and was late coming off.. We don't see the D coming on for Sanderson going in the D Door in the replay at all but we can reasonably expect that happened.

So is Norris offscreen to the left? I'm assuming we have two D back off screen to the right,

edit: yup, 3 guys were off screen, so it's legit.

I saw that....if that shot was zoomed out a bit, there's a Sen in the lower left corner...in the Caroline end

Coached a great game last night.

First period was rough but in the second they clearly changed some defensively (although they didn’t change anything offensively).

We played a very professional second period.

We tied it.

And then the refs completely killed the game.

Very very impressed with green.

You never see that called. Players need to hold on to their stick.

If he had slashed down on it, and it was knocked out, then I can see it, but he just swatted at it.

A great, heads up play IMO. Absolutely awful call.
