The only mildly surprising name is JAD, but he's got that ELC contract. And he didn't play in Ontario at all last year. However, they did re-sign Lizotte, and brought in Danault. If Fagemo was making the team, there's no Arvidsson or AA. Usually, teams specifically make room for young guys. Especially in the cap world. And the Kings did not do that.

Clague, Moverare, these are likely dime a dozen guys. Wolanin can probably do whatever the equivalent would be. Every organization has a Clague in it. How many waiver wire pickups go on to do great things? The odds that we'll miss him should someone take him are likely low.

There’s still quite a bit of dead weight lingering around who will likely all be gone over the course of the season or by next summer. Unless something drastic happens, like an unfortunate injury or trades, there are about 3-4 forwards who were reassigned who will very likely be in the NHL next season.

Athanasiou was signed to a $2.7M 1 way, 1 year contract.

That's a lot of scratch for a dude to "fight for a roster spot"

Maybe, but that was the end of July, too. I don't see him being guaranteed a spot, nor should he, with his history of volatility.

I do think a more aggressive system suits him and I'm glad it's a short deal for the most benefit to both but he's far from a guy you guarantee a spot to, and you previously made this comment about Wagner, too. So out of that post you replied to (Athanasiou, Byfield, Grundstrom, Lizotte, and Wagner), who goes?

Okay--Byfield blows everyone away and still goes down to the AHL. We can stomach that. Grundstrom has been vanilla, hasn't done much to earn it. Fine, waive him. That leaves Lizotte, Wagner, and AA, all guys who you point out have AEG money as a prohibitive concern. So, what do we do? We're setting Phil's wallet on fire somewhere, or icing an inferior team in compliance!

I think this ties in nicely to Jesse's likely ultimate point--but feel free to correct me if I'm horribly off because it's an assumption...but guys will get hurt and jettisoned otherwise, the roster that starts next week will look different by even Thanksgiving. I'm excited to see how it shakes out this year. I think a lot of us, myself included, are just impatiently waiting when we see flashes of brilliance.

I don't disagree, but there's also been very little information about his situation that I've seen. But I'm just some dude with no connections to the club, so my opinion should be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Yeah, plus Athanasiou and Maatta starting the year on injured reserve would solve a few short-term problems. Where does Athanasiou play though? Is he a fourth line player? At least one of Lizotte, Grundstrom, or Wagner has to be waived then.

Brown - Kopitar - Arvidsson
Kempe - Danault - Iafallo
Andersson - Vilardi - Tkachev
Athanasiou - Moore - Lemieux
Lizotte, ???

Is it a fight for the 14th forward here? Wagner vs. Grundstrom? Byfield gets the first callup when the time comes? Some combination of Moore, Lemieux, Athanasiou, Lizotte, Grundstrom, and Wagner makes up our fourth line?

Moore's shown a lot more than a fourth line player too, but what guy above him should tackle fourth-line duties? Andersson maybe? He's shown great chemistry with Vilardi. Don't want to break up that third line. It's almost a second line really, with Danault's line being the traditional shutdown line.

Maybe something like this?

Kempe - Kopitar - Arvidsson
Andersson - Vilardi - Tkachev
Iafallo - Danault - Brown
Lemieux - Lizotte - Moore
Athanasiou, Wagner/Grundstrom

If I have to choose between Wagner and Grundstrom, I probably lean slightly towards the Swede.

I don’t like JAD to Ontario, I think he’s better than Lizotte. And if Byfield gets sent down JAD will be playing 3c (maybe, Sutter is there too), behind Byfield and Turcotte.

I wonder if there's more offense to be found in JAD's game. Play him on the wing on one if the scoring lines and see what happens.

If it were up to me, I'd try Moore at 4C and slot Brown down onto the fourth line. I still think Fagemo should be given a shot up on line one. I think our biggest weakness is our LD, but I'm not sure what to do there. Mikey Anderson looked like a seasoned vet against Vegas last night though, which was super encouraging to see. I thought he was our best defender.

If I was in charge, I'd do something like this:

Fagemo - Kopitar - Arvidsson
Kempe - Danault - Iafallo
Andersson - Vilardi - Tkachev
Lemieux - Moore - Brown
Lizotte, Athanasiou

I'd also be looking to move guys like Kempe or Iafallo and Athanasiou. I think this might be Brown's last year, unless he really embraces a fourth-line checking role (and plays like he means it).

I think a few of our prospects will get call ups so I don't mind all the Cuts. I'm not sure anyone is ready but Fagemo on the top line will eventually happen. With injuries and other circumstances I'm pretty sure some of the kids will get playing time on the big club. No matter what we have to live with what we have and cross our fingers we don't get shutout every other night and our goalies step up to steal a game or two.

If you take out Lemieux this is the softest line up in Kings history particularly on D. That’s why I think Strand gets a look. I’ve been a fan since 92 and if you know Blake and Luc they won’t let the Kings get run over.

Even during the Andy Murray power play enforcer days the Kings at least had Jeff Cowan.

Look at Montreal and Tampa’s D and bottom 6. Kings don’t have a Josh Anderson or Pat Maroon.

Part of me wonders if Clague and Cale Fleury are camouflage for Moverare.

I can't defend Clague anymore after yesterday. That was his biggest audition and he failed with flying colors. It's nice that he's more of a 'specialist' than some other guys and was really wheeling the puck around offensively but he plays more lackadaisical defense than full-greenlight Erik Karlsson. I do think he's been dicked around by the org a bit but this is them saying goodbye so it's time for that clean break.

It was Kale Clague's time to shine last night and he looked awful, to say the least. I don't there is anyone that can defend him anymore, including me.

It's a shame because there is a LD spot there for him if only he would reach out and grab it. Unless Edler goes out with an injury, Clague has played himself off the team at this point.

Strand, on the other hand, although he plays on the right side looked good last night. In some regards he almost looked like a mini Matt Greene since he was the only physical presence from the Kings side.

The marginal bridge vets who are going to make the opening-night roster better be on a very short leash. I fully expect Ontario to kick ass this season in large part because of our top prospects. And if Byfield or Turcotte or any of them make it impossible to not call them up then it better happen.

Bjornfot hasn’t impressed me. I would go Strand-Walker as 3rd paid with Maata as extra.
Bjornfot looked very good last night, easily the Kings best defender. He expanded his range with the puck and looked much more comfortable than last year.

Strand, if you want him around for his "toughness", was on the ice when Carrier face planted Maatta and did absolutely nothing about it. I like the kid, but don't mistake him for a physical defenseman.

Yea bjornfot is great. Though he did start looking worse after maatta went down and he played a lot of minutes on a back to back

I didn't like JAD being a healthy scratch for 10 games at the start of last year, and I don't like JAD being sent to Ontario now. Keeping around organizational dead weight with no future here (Lizotte) instead of JAD just because JAD is waiver exempt doesn't sit right with me

I think we're down on AA because we haven't seen him play yet or where the coaches would slot him. We were all wondering how Tkachev would fit until we saw that it was "very well, thank you."

I'm serious, too, that we should dress him as a 13th forward, save him all night, and then throw him over the boards in the 3rd to terrorize an already tired opposition with his fresh legs.

Lizotte could still lose his spot. That’s what happens. Voynov put in his time and Kings traded JJ. He could force the Kings to waive or trade him but he has to make the Kings play that hand and obv he didn’t do that so far in camp.

It's certainly possible, but I'd be shocked if he didn't start the season as our fourth-line center.

I’m bummed that we may lose Frk. He had great chemistry with Vilardi. That injury did pretty much do him in. We have too much many players and not enough open spots. Not a terrible problem to have.
