yeah Holloway saying his wrist is good for hockey but his full range of motion still not being there is concerning in the long run...

that just screams re-injury

also I f***ing love Draisaitl

he really does deserve a blank cheque where he fills in the number

I hope we see a kid line of:

Schaefer - Holloway - Bourgault tried in the rookie camps and/or preseason. Has all the makings of a really effective line. Power forward (Schaefer) Two way forward (Holloway), Sniper/Playmaker (Bourgault)

Also hope we can see some games with Bourgault on a line with Draisaitl. I believe he will be the better fit on his RW as opposed to Yamamoto.

Anyone know how long Leon has been in Edmonton? What a leader, what a player, f*** are we ever lucky boys. I'm sure Connor would be there too if it wasn't for Biosteel. That's ok we need someone scouting Makar as much as possible
He was just in Paris for The NHL European Player Media Tour recently... heard he was scheduled to return to Edmonton Aug 29th. So he's only been in town for a couple of days or so... but still much earlier than many other players.. as is the case with him almost every season. But I'm a bit surprised that he's not taking part in the Biosteel camp... didn't he do that last year? All the big stars take part in that camp.

Nice little article, Sammy sounds like a beauty. It’s easy to root for a guy like that.

Yep.

Even though the team likes Broberg, I think Samorukov takes the #6 spot this fall. Doesn't hurt his chances that he fills a need/complements the other 5 main defencemen better. Plus Broberg, Niemo, Desharnais are all wavier exempt, so there's no risk to sending them down.

How I see the defence at the moment...

Nurse-Bouchard
Kulak-Ceci
Samo-Barrie

The left side's pecking order is clear, though the entire right side is fluid imo. I could see all of the RHDs playing on any of the pairings. Only clear part is Ceci's pairing is going to be the shutdown one. so I think you start him with Kulak for some stability, but then swap in Samo (or Niemelainen) once he gets comfortable at the NHL level.

If they can figure out the cap, I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Oil break camp and play with a 11-7 set up again.

Rooting for Sami too, had a pretty rough baptism to the bigs his first go round, so hopefully he realized what he needed to work on and makes a big leap.

Isnt Samo not waiver eligible anymore?

Hes probably going to be the #7 regardless. Could be #6 with a good camp though.
This would be his first year of waiver wire eligibity meaning yes he would have to pass through waivers of 31 other teams to be re-assigned to Bakersfield.

Here’s hoping he doesn’t get cheap shotted by the flames in the prospects games again this year. I still have hopes for him

Finally rookies aren't expected to do stuff right out of their draft year. We can finally insulate and develop. Love the internal competition that is going to come from it.
A lot of teams are going to be kicking themselves for letting Bourgault pass them by in the draft. He has the tools to be an elite player

In all seriousness though and jokes aside good on Draisaitl being out there with the rookies.

That‘s what a leader looks like. Thought I saw him and might have been Bourgault (it was a righty) with a couple nice passes and reads.

Those two seem like a potentially lethal offensive duo, hopefully they get a look together in preseason for Bourgault to build some confidence. Both high hockey IQ players who can shoot and pass at high levels, strong cycle games for both players as well. Obviously Draisaitl is a superstar amongst the very best in the world, but Bourgault has some traits that I think would mesh well with Drai.

Holloway is my favourite prospect we have and think he’ll be an absolute fan favourite. He can impact the game all over the ice.

However, of all our prospects I think Bourgault has the highest ceiling because of the aforementioned hockey IQ. Along with high end skill (shooting, puck handling, passing, etc.) and by all accounts he has a great work ethic. I’ve seen him play enough times now to get a decent read on him, and I think he has star potential upside. Looks very much like he’ll slot in as a top 6 forward eventually with clear 1st line star potential.

Not sure how intended this? His rough go round was a freak injury at center ice. I liked that he was stepping up and hitting in the neutral zone, but then he took a weird injury stepping up on a routine hit

The whole attraction to this player is his physicality. Hopefully he resumes his tenancy for predatory hits, I would love to see a Trouba style game from him

The hits he attempts and gets out of position will work themselves out with experience, but we want a headhunter on this current group imo

I thought that Kulak and Barrie were an affective pair together. Maybe someone could chime in with data. If that is true, it opens up some good opportunities for us. We could run a top big minute pairing with Nurse a decent 2nd pair and a softer minute pair

Nurse - Ceci
Kulak - Barrie
Samo / Broberg - Bouchard

edit - thank God we signed Ceci. Our defence would be in a world of hurt without him

Agreed on Ceci, and Kulak and Barrie were indeed a good pairing. It's one that I would spring back to after one of the rookies gets comfortable.

However I don't think Nurse with Ceci is the best idea. Even if he can handle it, I don't like the idea of drowning Nurse in tough minutes to give the Barrie and Bouchard pairings an easier time. Plus Ceci also started to drown last year on that pairing when it was tried. He can't do heavy consistent minutes vs. elites.

Nurse got paid because he was highly effective turning an offensive pairing into one you could play in an situation vs. any competition. So imo that's the role you need to keep him in. That means he's with Barrie or Bouchard.

That leaves you with Kulak-Barrie, Nurse-Bouchard, and Samo/Niemo-Ceci as a somewhat limited minutes shutdown pairing. (Best case is something in the vein of the Marincin-Fayne from years ago).

Though I admit, I really like the idea of Kulak-Ceci. It's strikes me a straightforward meat and potatoes pairing that can eat a ton of minutes and defensive responsibilities. That leaves all 3 of Nurse, Bouchard, Barrie free(r) to lead the attack, and where they can maximise their value.

Footage from today's skate:

The chip to himself and batting the puck into the net is filthy at the 1:22 min mark. Borgault receiving passes from Drai/McDavid and converting it into Sportsnet top 10 highlight is going to be a common place with the kid isn't it. Not going to lie. I'd love to see Kane McDavid Boargault line tried sometime in preseason.

I don’t claim to know a dawn thing about our prospects but from what little I’ve seen of Borgault over the last week, he’s a keeper. He looks like he’s going to be a steal. So please people keep him out of your nasty trade proposals.😬
