Laf zib buch
Panarin stroke kakko
CK chytil gauthier

People will complain about laf being on the "1st line" but this is how you stretch a lineup to have depth and integrate youth with meaningful minutes.

unless there was some reason Zibanejad couldn't catch an earlier flight it seems bad on his part to arrive late for camp and have to quarantine, so that's really a "good" excuse

I find the optimism on Miller, from management and fans, really really surprising.

I’ve been wrong on prospects before. But I didn’t think Miller was ready for the AHL, let alone the NHL. Would be quite the (welcomed) miscalculation on my part.

Excited to see what happens over the next week.

Vince Mercagliano had an interview with the guy from elite prospects who mentioned he felt the fit for Miller at Wisconsin wasn't great and didn't play to his strengths...like Miller was asked to do less skating of hte puck and more of a must pass it quickly up the ice to break things out etc

Everyones circumstances are different. For all we know, Mika has a elderly grandparent who is not doing well who he wanted to spend the holidays with before he flew over.

even so, he massively outperformed the rest of that D group.

I understand the skepticism of him being NHL ready, I share it as well. He is 100% ready for the AHL though

This is going to be one of the more interesting camps in a while, I think.

You have your givens up front in Zibanejad, Strome, Kakko, Lafreniere, Buchnevich, Panarin, Kreider, Chytil, Lemieux, and Howden

and Trouba, Fox, DeAngelo, and Lindgren on defense.

That leaves at least two forward spots and two defense spots in the starting lineup wide open (IMO) for contention. I don't think it's a given Gauthier makes it. Blackwell, Rooney, Barron, and Gettinger are all stiff competition for bottom 6 spots. I think lots will be shocked by how many NHL games Blackwell gets. Rooney is going to be needed to kill penalties. I'm not sold Gauthier is a consistent starter from day 1.

The left side of the defense is going to be really interesting to follow. Lindgren is the only one with a definite spot on the left side. Smith is going to play because of the experience and grit factor. That leaves Johnson, Miller, Reunanen, Hajek, Robertson, Crawley and Bitteto for one spot. Crawley and Hajek are pretty safely AHL'ers, but honestly anyone else on this list has the capability to grab the brass ring and force themselves into the picture. Johnson has no business seeing NHL games as long as one of Reunanen, Miller, or Robertson can prove themselves competent, but it's going to be the same old song and dance. Bitteto is your 7th defenseman regardless due to expansion rules, I think.

Here's the truth on Mika. Look, I love the guy and he proved to be a great regular season player who is improving (and I won't hold it against him for not upping his game in the play-ins that's on Quinn) BUT:

If you want to wear the C on your jersey you get your ass to NY with enough time to quarantine and get settled.

This is a guy who should be very familiar with international travel and quirky situations from both his parents.

If there was some situation, cool, but if it's just because he would rather hang around Sweden, not Captain worthy.

I think I would have agreed in full with this had training camp been in September.

After seeing K'Andre's dedication, and how well he fit in with the play-in practices, I think I lean towards him as the favourite of the young LDs to grab that spot.

I still think Reunanen is getting slept on though. He is going to catch people's attention at camp.

In my opinion Reunanen has the best shot to make the team because he's played like 25 minutes a night most of the last few months and he's also man mature.

He looked a lot like a McD-lite last camp and there's a reason he hung around until the very end.

The problem for him is he has to do something to catch Quinn and Martin's eyes and either excel with the lower tier jabrones if he starts with them, or look comfortable with Trouba/Fox/TDA.

He doesn't have the same kind of "sex appeal" as a K. Miller who is a high pick/American/physical freak, or Hajek who was the crown jewel of a big trade.

Sometimes those prospects are solid and unremarkable yet get lost in the shovel. Look at Ryan Graves, he was solid in the AHL but because Smith was acquired in a big trade, they kept giving dumb dumb chances.

Even though Miller has more upside, if Reunenan looks better next to Trouba or TDA and lets either play to their strengths, it would be in management's best interest to play him there.

True story about how much I dislike Smith: I went to but a 2021 calendar yesterday and the choices were between a Rangers mini and an anime one. I chose the later because the thought of having to look at Brendan Smith for a full month was too much for me to deal with.

Anyone who expects him to improve, nope. He's not a smart player. I think Pascal Dupuis contributed more in his time in NY.

I find it very hard to believe that Miller makes it straight out of camp.
Wishful thinking at best..

Why is it that we're so high on Reunanen making the team now but I literally never hear anything about him. It's all Lundkvist, Miller, Schneider, and Jones. Is it just him getting lost a shuffle of incredible depth?

I don't think we have nearly as many Finnish posters or people who actively follow Liiga. I follow all the prospects very closely but even I watch way less Liiga and just don't pay it as much attention. I think that's part of it.

This season, it took him a while to sign on anywhere. He started in Mestis which is a crappy league and no one watches. He did well, of course, and eventually moved on to a Liiga club. He only played 14 games total between the two clubs, as Liiga paused their season in early December.

I like him, but perhaps not as much as some others here do.

A lot of us here like to root for those quiet mid-round picks from Europe who don't really have much of a social media presence.

Most of the other guys you mentioned are high picks.

Tarmo has done well in whichever league he has been in and he looked great in camp last year, it was a numbers game or he could've easily made the team and done as well as Hajek did if not better.

Because he's 22 and followed the 'process'
He wasn't top 50 pick, so folks here hadn't gifted him a 800 game career.
And NYR LD is an area with few (Lindgren) sure-things for this year.
A year from now, it would maybe be a cluster of him, KAndre and Robertson on cusp at LD.

But, despite all the gushing, in summer, and this morning, by front office, I don't see Miller being acceletated to NHL without AHL time w coaches KK and Murphy. No reason to rush him unless he absolutely excels and surprises.
