Or maybe planning on having only 13 forwards in training camp (Hvirik was invited) is due to the fact that the coaching staff is already familar with the other options in the organization and doesn't want to disrupt the Whale roster too much.

Kreider is much better off listening to Tortorella, rather than playing the odds.

Couldn't agree more. One would have to think that since Tortorella didn't have the Rangers to focus on that he was actively scouting the AHL to see what kids are progressing/ready etc.

Torts and Kreider are playing the game they need to play.

It's foolish to think Kreider wouldn't have a spot come opening night; and not only that, he needs to have a spot or they will be playing with 7 d-men dressed. There are no forwards to replace Kreider. Torts is not going to bring up a forward from the AHL without attending camp, learning the system and buying into the team philosophy, just to prove a point about Kreids - even if he **** the bed during camp, which he isn't and won't.

They already need to figure out the 12th forward for Saturday's opener due to Asham being the goon he is.

Bylsma said on NHLN that they would start Vokoun against the Rangers in the 2nd of back to back games for them.

shutout with 98 saves...book it.

I was thinking 85 saves, but yeah... pretty much that.

Also, nice to see you again Inferno. Haven't seen you around much lately, but then again, I've been off the boards a lot too.

Hey guys, I didn't want to start a new thread. Is anyone worried that our D may suffer this year because some of the guys we lost were good defensive guys and people are saying the guys that we replaced them with aren't that great defensively (e.g. Pyatt).

Yes. that has to be a concern. Dubinsky and Anisimov were very good defensive forwards. Pyatt and Nash are just above average but they are not the same. The Rangers have to hope that Stepan and Hagelin can take the next step defensively and that Halpern can help out on the PK (which hasn't been mentioned but he is a good defensive center).

I think we may see the Rangers open up a bit more this season. I think they want to start to control the puck more in the offensive zone hence the signing of Pyatt who does his best work down low.

1) Asham is not a goon. I think many people here will really grow to respect the game he plays. I will never forget the fight he had with Paul Mara where Mara dislocated his shoulder after he swung to hit Asham. Asham could tell something was wrong, asked him if he was okay, Mara replied with "I just separated my shoulder". Asham immediately stopped the fight and called the linesman in. Goon?

2) The Rangers are going to have (7) d-men dressed in the opener anyways because Bickel is going to play F which means Eminger will most likely be dressed on D.

Asham is going to be one of those guys that the fanbase enjoys when hes on the team.

The Ulf Samuelsson effect.

Asham can play the game. He had a 96 point season in the WHL. Double-digit goals four times in his NHL career. He has some ability and can do things other than punch people.

The are very few pure, traditional goons in the league now. Brad Staubitz, George Parros and Krys Barch are a few that come to mind. It's a dying breed though. Gotta be able to take a somewhat regular shift in today's game.

1) Yeah, Asham sucks.

2) Well, I assume you mean Gilroy will be sitting, with Bickel on F and Eminger on D, but you can't have 7 d dressed if 12 forwards are.

Asham, like Rupp is the kind of fighter I don't mind having. Multi-time double digit goal scoring from the the line is always a solid contribution.

Would I rather have Prust? Probably but he was who we could afford.

The thing I worry about with Asham is that he's getting up there in age. I didn't watch him closely last year so I can't remember, but how is his skating? I worry that the bottom six might slow down too much

Richards is still out with the flu per Katie Strang.

This is unfortunate and a big issue that hasnt been talked about much. Richards is the guy that ties this lineup together at the 1C spot. I dont even know who is going to play center if he cant play this weekend.

Not to mention the flu knocks the **** out of you. He is going to be behind the 8 ball when it comes to conditioning.
