Why have people brought up Asham's junior stats?

He's had 27 points in 108 games over the past two seasons. Not very good, but he's also put up 10 points in his last 33 PO games, which is better, and had a 25 point year with Philly three years ago.

I think, at 34, he's not as good as he once was and won't be an important member of the team and would've looked for other alternatives on the market. However, it doesn't look like there were many alternatives so there's really no reason to hate the deal.

NYR, NHL, NHLPA believed discussing scenario under which NYR could exercise compliant buyout on Redden now while retaining AHL cap hit.
NYR would retain cap hit of 5.6m even if Redden signs with NHL team. It's a possibility.

1) Yeah, Asham sucks.

Forgive me for not jumping for joy because a player of Asham's caliber is now on our team.

The only thing that sucks here, is your opinion about Asham. He's a ****ing fourth liner. Yet he's consistently popped double-digit goals numerous times in his career.

If he "sucked" he would have been Hollwegg'd out of this league. He would be playing dodgeball with dale purinton if he really sucked. Or posting on a message board like you (and me).

How many foolish posts can you manage to bless us with today? My bets on 17.

I was thinking 85 saves, but yeah... pretty much that.

Also, nice to see you again Inferno. Haven't seen you around much lately, but then again, I've been off the boards a lot too.

ive been here, every single day, i just dont post much because theres nothing really to add most days lol. its all been said....a lot.

Asham is a decent 4th liner who can beat some people up if they take liberties, as well as pot the occasional goal. What's the issue here?

That seems to not make sense. Why use our compliance buyout on him now if we're going to retain his 5.6m cap hit even if he signs with another team? Just to do him a favor so that he might get signed somewhere? I think we've given him something like 30m favors already. Why use the buyout in a situation where the player is free to sign elsewhere but we still get the cap hit?

Third and fourth liners should be 25 and 15 goal scorers respectively. 45 points from your third liners, 30 from your fourth liners. NHL '12 syndrome. It's massive on these boards.

Dont see the big deal. Im sure its something the PA is pushing for so they dont have their members rotting on a couch for a year.

true...

People need to realize that most teams can't roll 4 lines like the 06-07 Sabres.

I read it as they would need to retain his 900k AHL cap hit

I assume it's more of a "you'll keep his cap hit for the rest of this season so you don't get an unfair advantage over other teams, but it will be off the books next season as it would be if you had waited until summer for the compliance buyout"

It's just doing a favor for Redden and Gomez

Because it's the nice thing to do! It makes no difference to the Rangers, why take away his chance to compete?

In a business, or in a competitive sport where you're trying to win, why do you eat 5.6m just to do someone a favor? Why would want to do this? We can explore trading him and retaining a fraction of his salary instead of getting hit with his full cap hit so that he can play for someone else. How does that make sense? Oh, you go sign with the Penguins and play against us; we'll pay you 5.6m. No.

Because he took away his own chance to compete, by not competing. So we buy him out now while still getting his full cap hit, he signs in NJ or Pitts or something as a #6/7 and he plays against us while we pay him 6m? No thanks.

This would at least make some sense. I can't imagine wanting to do a favor for a guy you've already paid millions to unless there is some, logical advantage to it eventually.

Aren't the compliance buyouts 2/3rds of the cost of the actual contract? If so, in theory the Rangers would save a little bit of money by buying him out now, if that applied to his 2012-2013 salary

1) Asham is not a goon. I think many people here will really grow to respect the game he plays. I will never forget the fight he had with Paul Mara where Mara dislocated his shoulder after he swung to hit Asham. Asham could tell something was wrong, asked him if he was okay, Mara replied with "I just separated my shoulder". Asham immediately stopped the fight and called the linesman in. Goon?

2) The Rangers are going to have (7) d-men dressed in the opener anyways because Bickel is going to play F which means Eminger will most likely be dressed on D.

i dont think youre remembering it exactly right.

Asham stopped the fight as soon as the linesman came in, but he didnt ask him if hes ok, stop the fight and call the linesman in, he kept throwing them till the linesman came in even though mara stopped because he was clearly hurt.

I specifically remember Mara, after the game, sending a thanks via the media to Arron for stopping early.
