I still can't get over the awful trade of dumping Mats "Zuuuuuke" Zuccarello for a measly 2nd round pick in 2019 and a 3rd round pick in 2020. I know, it was a rebuild and the organization needed options, but where went the whole "if you as a player want to leave now, we will help you out" deal? Where went that gentle touch to the roster? Trading Zuccarello left Lundqvist in tears. What state do you think the rest of the room was at? He was loved and a staple in the NYR roster. For what? What did we get for those picks? Garbage.
Zuccarello was a good friend of Lundqvist and Hank's mental strength to win was rubbed off on Zuke. It's clear to show in the interviews. Zuke could've carried that hard work mentality from Hank to the rest of the team. A continuing winning mentality of a winning culture. Nope.
McDonaugh and Miller were dealt for peanuts to Tampa. It was a goddamn daylight robbery that stapled Tampa as Cup competitors from then to many years to come. Nevermind the other deals. What Rangers got back was a robbery for ONLY McD. Holy hell...
Grabner, everybody were dealt for peanuts. If Zuccarello would've accepted the fire sale and not stayed loyal, he wouldn't have been dealt like the garbage at the back door and he would've been in a better position himself.
This really bugs me. NYR rewarded Zuccarello's loyalty - even through the rough years - like a goddamn doormat. Now he's back on track in Minnesota and is still a treat to watch, but he should still play in New York. What the hell happened there? It was pathetic.
THIS is why new players in the league don't hold ANY loyalty to the franchise that drafted them. Because why should they? It's a business company, who cares which ruthless company it is?
This is also what really bugs me about the entertainment model of the NHL instead of the sports model of a sports league. Can't they at least try to be a sports league once and then? It's pathetic.
As for the rest of the awful trades in NYR history through the last decade? I could write a book about it.
