I'm just curious for those advocating trading Carts, Doughty, and Quick.

What are your expectation on returns?

I still think this year was a bit of a rebuild/injury plagued year.

The three rookies on defense are solid and will get better.

Kopitar had an abysmal year but I'll cut him some slack due to his entire career's work in LA. Hard to find another Kopi.

Do you think LA will ever have another generational dman and goalie if Quick and Doughty are moved?

Who will replace Carter?

How many years will it take to get back to what LA is/was?

Outside help is likely not coming next year.

Maybe Amadio or Brodzinski can step up.

I say this core has two-to-three more kicks at the can, then you start looking to rebuild proper.

Curious as to what pieces you think moving these guys out for will make them a better overall team.

The only way to justify a Doughty trade is if he wants out. If he wants out, then that is when a rebuild will be necessary.

There's a long list of others who need to be moved before the aforementioned names, but nobody is going to take on garbage like Gaborik. So Lombardi's hands are tied and he has to get creative with a new expansion team coming in.

Sorry, anyone advocating a 'rebuild' is off their meds. And if you're gonna trade Quick and Doughty, you better had Kopitar to that list (and yes, someone would take him).

We still have the core, what the team needs is a new voice. Look what's happening in Boston, Minnesota...look what it did for SAN JOSE!...I'm sure there are others I can't think of right now.

Get a new coach, and let's see what happens.

Should think long and hard about trading Quick. Many teams would be interested and you could get a pretty good return. After this season, he will have six years on his contract and teams like the Islanders, Sabres, and other young teams would probably take him. If you can get a Visnovsky type deal (2 roster players that are younger that will help long term) then it should be considered.

The core is not the problem, the coaching is.

This.

I was hoping when DL did his 'round the clock organizational assessment, from the stickboy, to himself', (that lasted like 10 days) following last years playoff exit, I was hoping DS would be replaced then. That was the time to do it.

Need just a few more speed and skill guys. Maybe 2. They replace Iginla and (buyout / trade) Gaborik. Brodzinski is one. Has skill, decent speed, creates his own scoring chances and can snipe. 24 goals in Ontario without a lot of talent around him is pretty impressive. Consider Tanner Pearson topped out at 19 goals there! Kempe is here to stay and injects speed and skill. He will only get better.

The changes on D from: Schenn, McBain, Scuderi (all of whom played in last years playoffs) to: Forbort, Ladue and Gravel is a marked improvement. Those 3 will only get better.

A trade I think that should be pursued - trade Muzzin for the best forward that could be had. Muzzin still has good value, but could fetch a top 6 forward. Maybe not elite, but a legit one. Good defensemen are hard to acquire in deals and fetch a good return.

It's not time for a rebuild. Time for coaching change and inject a few more skill / speed forwards. Toffoli should get back to his game next season as well.

Do you sign Bishop in this scenario? Miller?

Ah, the fountain of youth for Kopitar? I doubt it.

Anyone thinking this team is going to go from winning one playoff game in three seasons to cup contender without some major overhaul taking place is just wishing.

I bet SJ fans were saying the exact same thing after the Kings destroyed them in 2014.

You think trading Marleau would have made a huge difference?

Hell, had they done it, San Jose might be better off today.

San Jose is the likely loser in the WCF this season, but only because they play in the Pathetic Division.

Kopitar isn't part of the core then? Because I'd say he's been a pretty big problem this year. In fact I will go as far as to say he is THE reason we're going to miss the playoffs this year.

Don't worry when Sutter gets the boot, Kopitar is going to go to the net like a mad man.

To respond to the OP:

I think you have to look at moving Carter in the off season. You need to get at least 3 assets in return. All under the age of 23.

I would add to your list Martinez. He should get the Kings a decent prospect and 2nd round pick. The Kings need the cap space and the Kings have LaDue, Gravel, and Forbort coming along nicely.

They could poach some good young talent from Detroit if Holland plans on making that team competitive again... Florida as well.

Someone on the trade board mentioned Bjugstad for Muzzin. I still like Muzzin more than Martinez, but a Bjugstad for Muzzin or Martinez deal, or something like it, should be considered if it's out there.

Might even be able to get Bjugstad + for one of those two.

As noted in story, two prominent UFAs - forward Aston-Reese (NU) and defenceman Bayreuther (SLU) - likely to sign in next 24-48 hours.

I hope the Kings' Blake and others - possibly DL, have paid a visit
to Aston-Reese and trying to get him to sign.

I agree that I think you have to try a new voice before mushroom clouding the roster. That at least gives you until the trade deadline next year to think about it and start moving assets for high picks in better drafts.

I posted in another thread that only two coaches have longer tenure than Sutter right now--Q for obvious reasons and Tippett because he's part of hockey ops as well. The next batch aren't even 4 full years in yet.

5 years is an eternity in hockey. Sutter will be the best coach in Kings history for a long long time at the very least and maybe they're just letting him ride off into the sunset respectfully right now. But it's time for a breath of fresh air so we can see what this roster has left for proper evaluation of talent outside of the Sutter system.

Don't worry when Sutter gets the boot, Kopitar is going to go to the net like a mad man.

Probably not but I guarantee a new system will see him either shooting off the rush more or cutting into the slot at least instead of curling away or going behind the net in the name of possession first.

Remember he's a coach's kid, some of these guys are pretty damn good at following orders.

The only deal I can see LA making now is a dman for a guy like Tatar.

Gaborik and Brown are the biggest obstacles to a decent retool. Don't see how either gets moved. A buyout would suck too.

Bring up Brodzinski and give him a shot.

If you move Carter you need a good young center like Barzal coming back with a First or in that nature of move.

This would be a ray of hope in a rather dark season.

Though not sure how you convince a kid with all those points to come to an offensive system like the Kings.

No way they blow this team up in a weak draft year and expansion year. Only guys getting moved will be the one Vegas takes and UFAs.

The problem isn't the core, but the money we pay to 30-point players like Brown and Gaborik.

That and injuries and incosistencies. And the coach is done too.

Unfortunately, there's no way to get rid of those contracts.

I haven't been impressed with any of the touted college free agents aside from Vesey.

Most people think ZAR will be lucky to be a 3rd liner.

Kopitar, Toffoli, Muzzin, Martinez are a problem so yes it is a core problem. It could be coaching as well but what does that say about them?
