I could be wrong, but I would think you’d be looking at $9 million at the least for a top pairing rhd
As a UFA, yes... which is why I've suggested numerous times in the past that we need to be looking at a Larsson, Parayko type, who has cost controlled term. Pesce wouldn't cost $9... maybe $6 max.

We can't go out looking for a legit top pairing top free agent... we just need a complimentary player for Mo... and then worry about the rest of the pieces from there.

Didn’t Seattle mention they won’t be moving Larsson? Also Parayko has a NTC, not sure if it’s a limited clause or not but he clearly has some if not all control whether he wants to come to Toronto. Easier said than done that’s for sure when mentioning trading for certain players. Unfortunately I think the Leafs will need to look through free agency to bolster their blueline even if that means overpaying a little.

I agree with that, aim for three solid pairs.

Roy seems like a smart two way fit who would complement Mo and is one of the younger UFA’s. Maybe Carrier, maybe Demelo, or Walker. One guy from that tier. Then backfill the rest? Maybe they double back on Jensen later, find the size and snarl to fill out the group.

Roy somewhat feels like a pipe dream, he seems like the perfect player for Yzerman to throw 5M+ at to come home and anchor their 2nd pair.

Demelo would be strong partner for Rielly and Carrier would be a good player to play next to McCabe on the 2nd pair. Assuming both come in around 7M that would be ideal.

Rielly-Demelo
McCabe-Carrier
Benoit-Liljegren

If Liljegren is asking for more than 2.5M I’d move on from him. I’d target McBain or Frost in a 1 for 1 deal with the preference being McBain.

So who do you think the other team would want in return for a top pairing rhd? Also, do not want Parayko, too much term left and he's on the wrong side of 30.

Pesce
Roy
Montour
DeMelo
Carrier
Hakanpaa
Walker

Are the main UFA RHD I'd be interested in, though there are legit concerns around age and the contracts some of these guys will get that will likely drive my interest down, depending on what caphit/term we're looking at.

Something like DeMelo + Hakanpaa could be good options whose contracts are less likely to be absurd.

If we could add Roy, Demelo and Hakanpaa for combined 12 mil, that would do wonders for our defense.

Rielly-Demelo
McCabe-Roy
Benoit-Hakanpaa

Personally I'd look at flipping Liljegren as well. He's had his opportunities to solidify himself and just can't seem to do it here. McBain, Hayton and Frost are all good targets. I'd might even add a little if it meant getting Laughton.

It feels like what we need more than anything is a star level blueliner who is better than Morgan Rielly in the number one spot and all the other pairings can be resolved “fairly easily.” That guy slots ahead of Mo. Everything else falls into order behind.

It’s a fairly obvious statement but I hope that helps to clarify for the team how to spend the cap money and when it will be worth it to trade a 1st, Minten, what have you. You want to overskill other teams, you need an utterly elite defenseman to keep that pressure cooker lid on and you need someone who defends effortlessly and eats up minutes.

Everything else is just a carousel of interchangeable parts.

I'd expect the Leafs to be very active in the free agent prospect market this off-season. Funk and Bravaro already signed with NHL teams.

We already know the Leafs are among almost every team interested in signing Tsyplakov. I also read a report weeks/months ago about the Leafs scouting/interested in Connor Punnett from the Generals. EDIT: Punnett signed with Dallas.

Collin Graf seems to be the top free agent right now but the Red Wings apparently have the inside edge.

Oscar Eklind is a 6'3" winger doing really well in the SHL (and 64 PIMs) so I'd expect the Leafs to be in on that very much.

Samuel Mayer is another big body 6'3" defenseman. I saw him play the other day with the 67s and he was pretty decent. Nothing standing out.

What defenceman better than Rielly would be available? Lots of rumours of Parayko but a few insiders completely shutting that down saying St. Louis isn’t looking to move him. He also has a NTC so who’s to say he would even waive to come to Toronto? Weegar? Well unless Treliving completely overpays out of his ass, it doesn’t seem like Calgary wants to deal with him and he might not even be available. Outside of those two, who that is better than Rielly would be available? It’s easy to say they need to trade for a top pairing dman but the likelihood of those type of defenceman actually being available is very slim to none.

In the past 3-4 years Devon Toews, Seth Jones, Filip Hronek, Hampus Lindholm, Dougie Hamilton, Alex Pietrangelo, Erik Karlsson, Brandon Montour, Gustav Forsling, Jakob Chychrun, Mattias Ekholm, Bowen Byram, Noah Hanifin, etc. have all exchanged hands via trade, signing, at different price points and cap hits. Some are better than Rielly, some are younger than Rielly. Some bring different skillsets. So it’s really up to the GM to pounce on the next opportunity that comes up with whatever cap space and trade assets we can muster.

Getting Schenn, Bogosian, Edmundson and Lyubushkin every year fix depth issues is fine. But the blueline needs permanent long term and high end solutions.

Since we're looking to the offseason, feels likely we'll trade Jarnkrok for a paltry return to free up 2.1M.

You’re going to end up giving more money to lesser UFA defenders.. who are also closing in on the wrong side of 30.

5 million for Demelo or 6.5 for Parayko isn’t even a decision. Roy for 6?

It's almost as if Marner should have been moved for a #1 Dman in the offseason...

Regardless, I hope Tre signs/trades for a #1 dman this offseason. But as a fan who has had hope in this team for 30 years.... Hope is a terrible strategy.

I think so too, but we'll need cap somewhere. Matthews and Willy alone will receive an extra 6.25M.

For a team with no cap space, I'm not sure they'll be looking to move one of their only team friendly deals. We need more like Jarnkrok, not to get rid of him. To replace him will cost more on the cap than keeping him.

Dewar and Holmberg are Kampf Jarnkrok replacements, then sign a guy Like Trenin for 1.5

I'm not saying I want him traded. I'm pointing out we have very limited cap space and this is a player in his 30s that's one of the easiest way to create space

I definitely agree but just don’t see who could potentially be available. A decent amount of those defencemen also really took off after joining their new team. Marino could be a perfect candidate for that. We’re also pretty weak on assets to compete with other teams if a better dman does become available considering every team is always looking to improve blueline. Werenski is a name off the charts I’d look into.

Yep, I love Werenski’s potential. Thought of him in the background while thinking about this. And yeah other guys on that list were definitely reclamation style guys. We need to start looking for those too. That’s why I wanted to grab that underachieving Swedish kid via LA and VGK.
